If a day trip from Berlin is on your mind, consider paying a visit to the beautiful city of Schwerin. On our most recent drive to Hamburg, Sven and I took a short detour to explore this delightful north-western Germany city.
Schwerin is the state capital of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The city, and it’s iconic island-castle, is built between a cluster of beautiful lakes in the regions. I must say, the balance between the natural surroundings and the elaborate architecture of Schwerin Castle is absolutely stunning. Sven and I enjoyed strolling through the parks and green-spaces as much as we liked exploring the grand palace and the charming oldtown.

About Schwerin Castle
The castle, as we see it today, was built during the 19th century and inspired by France’s famous Château de Chambord. However, the island has been inhabited for over a thousand years and has long served as grounds for a fortress. The oldest parts of the castle were built during the 16th century, giving this palace an interesting architectural mash-up of both Historism and Neorenaissance styling. The castle was home to the royal family of Mecklenburg-Schwerin until 1918 when the reign of the Granddukes ended. Since the reunification of Germany, Schwerin Castle has served as the seat of regional parliament, and the castle museum has been open to visitors since 1974.

Exploring Schwerin
When visiting Schwerin Castle, be sure to enjoy its stunning interior architecture, lake-front Orangery, and expansive ornamental gardens. I would also recommend taking a bit of time to explore the oldtown of Schwerin and the parks that surround the city. You can even rent a boat and spend the afternoon paddling around Schwerin Lake, taking in a view of the castle from the water. When it comes to food, there are lots of cafes and restaurants to choose from in Schwerin. Sven and I had breakfast at a cozy café near the main city square, but unfortunately I can’t recommend the coffee or croissants, so I won’t mention the name.

Getting to Schwerin from Berlin
Travel between Berlin and Schwerin takes around 2 to 2.5 hours depending on how you get there. Sven and I went by car, but it’s also relatively affordable and fast to go there by Flixbus or DB train.
