The first week of fall is officially upon us so to mark the occasion, Sven and I decided to make an impromptu trip to the Blue Ridge Mountains.
The blue ridge mountains will always have a special place in my heart. After all, they were my home for more than three years while I was in college. It felt like I was long over due for a visit. Sven has never seen the fall colors on the Blue Ridge Parkways so I was excited to share this special place with him. I was hopeful we would see some vibrate fall foliage in transition too.
Sadly, the colors weren’t as vibrant as I had hoped. Regardless..
die Berge und Wasser sind wunderschön
(wunderschön – my current favorite German word 😛 )
We pack our standard picnic – fresh fruit and avocado sandwiches on fresh-baked baguettes. One with brie and apples, the other with chèvre and tomatoes. Sehr gut!
We also had a four-legged friend along for the adventure! Ashley was out of town for the weekend, so Sven and I looked after her sweet pup, Dallas. It’s always nice to have a trial run with a dog. We would love to have a dog of our own, but we don’t have the time for one right now with work and travel!
We spent a few hours walking around Julian Price Lake. I think this is one of the most peaceful spots in the Blue Ridge Mountains. I wanted to take a canoe onto the water, but Dallas didn’t seem up for that adventure. We walked the full loop instead and found a little spot with a view of the water where we snacked away our lunch.
At Moses Cone Manor, I finally found some fall colors in the trees. You can see how happy that made me. What you can’t see, however, is how bad my allergies were by this point. Honestly, I have no idea how I survived three years of the hay fever!
We ended the day with a trip into Blowing Rock in search of fresh apple cider before heading to my favorite vegan restaurant in Boone. I’ve spent so many weekends in these mountains. It was nice to add one more weekend to my collection of beautiful memories.
