EG Damgaard is a Danish-based modern swimwear brand with a vision for protecting our oceans and earth. Today I’m excited to highlight their line of sustainable swimwear — beautiful pieces that are consciously made and a dream to wear.
[AD] What sets EG Damgaard apart from other swimwear brands begins with their fabrics. Their swim garments are made exclusively from ECONYL, a regenerated nylon made from recycled ocean waste such as fishing nets and plastics. But beyond their fabrics, EG Damgaard’s conscious mindset touches all aspects of the brand, from their 100% compostable and biodegradable packaging materials to the eco-friendly cotton bag each piece is delivered in. EG Damgaard encourages their customers to help aid in the fight against ocean pollution by using this little bag to collect plastic and rubbish when at the beach.
While I really appreciate EG Damgaard’s sustainable approach, I also love the look and feel of the swimwear they create. The ECONYL fabric they use is buttery soft and has a light ribbed texture that gives each piece the perfect amount of stretch for an ultra-flattering fit, and their styles are modern, elegant, and unique. It’s obvious to me that a great deal of creativity has gone into designing each suit and bikini.
The black Penelopé bikini I’m wearing in this post is one of EG Damgaard’s standout designs in their collection, featuring a beautiful one-shoulder cut that can be knotted or tied in a feminine bow. I also quite love the versatility of their Neva one-piece. I’ve worn the straps crossed and tied in the middle of my back, but it’s possible to adjust the knots any way you like — uncrossed or tied high on the shoulders.
To keep fabrics fresh and their colors bright, it’s a good idea to give your swim pieces a gentle wash ever-so-often. I’ve been using EG Damgaard’s Bikini Over Everything eco-friendly detergent to hand-wash my suits. Because this wash comes with the amazing essence of gardenia and rosemary, I’ve also been using it for all my delicates, not only my swimwear.
To get to know EG Damgaard better and understand their ethos, I spoke with the brand’s founder and creative director, Mie Eg Damgaard. I hope you enjoy our interview…

An Interview with Mie Eg Damgaard
Founder & Creative Director
Q: Tell me more about what motivated you to begin your label?
A: My desire to start a modern label with a focus on sustainability made in high quality fabrics and stunning colors.
Q: What has been your biggest sense of accomplishment on this journey?
A: We searched for the right fabrics for almost a year before we found ECONYL, which is what our suits are from. It’s an Italian high grade fabric that is soft to the touch, amazing to wear and has long lasting properties. It took us a long time because we wanted to source the perfect fabric for our collections. Now we make our own unique colors for each collection, so basically we are the only ones producing this unique color in our sustainable fabrics, which is pretty amazing. The color for this season is Stormy Blue, which has been a total best-seller so far.
Q: Why is it important to you that even the smallest garments we wear, swimwear, is made with such a sustainable mindset?
A: All products we make in this work have an impact in several ways. One, we want to keep our own carbon footprint on this earth as low as possible but we are also spreading the awareness of making better sustainable choices to our consumers. The more the awareness is spread around the world, the more demanding the consumer will be, forcing more and more companies to produce sustainably. We are a small company, but everyone has an impact on our planet, even you and me.
Q: What types of feelings do you hope a woman experiences when she wears an EG Damgaard design?
A: I want her to feel like she is lying on a Riviera beach with a sense of sophistication. Our designs are simple, but elegant and sophisticated. We are very much inspired by Southern European beach cities like Cannes, Monaco and Marbella.
Q: What makes EG Damgaard swimwear unique, when it comes to climate responsibility?
A: Mostly our use of fabrics but we try and have a wholesome approach when it comes to sustainability. We use local manufacturers in Portugal – we actually moved our production from Bali to Europe, to lower our carbon footprint and support manufacturers in Portugal. We support non-profit organizations that rids our ocean from waste and especially plastic waste, which has huge devastating effects on our planet. Our fabrics also use much less water and CO2 when producing and we recycled ocean waste, while not sacrificing on fabric performance which is pretty cool. We are just transitioning to soya based packaging and we have a policy to not use paper. As we grow, we want to commit to larger projects of cleaning oceans and supporting marine-life preservation companies.
