In the heart of Copenhagen hidden behind the beautiful muted façade of Hotel Alexandra, a colorful world of mid-century Danish design awaits to be discovered.
During my most recent visit to Copenhagen, I had the great pleasure of staying at Hotel Alexandra – a wonderfully unique destination that falls into a category somewhere between boutique hotel and design museum. Everywhere you turn, there’s an original piece of mid-century Danish design history – an invaluable collection that Hotel Alexandra has carefully sourced over the last 20 years. For Danish design enthusiast like me, a visit to Hotel Alexandra feels a bit magical. The concept for the hotel was inspired by the manager’s grandfather who served as Head of Exhibition at the Louisiana Museum in Denmark. Over the years, this nurtured appreciation for Danish design heritage evolved into what is now one of Copenhagen’s nicest living design museums – Hotel Alexandra.

Vibes & Accommodations
Although Hotel Alexandra is full of vintage design pieces that originate from the 50’s and 60’s, nothing there feels the least bit stuffy or outdated. The lobby has a cozy and laidback atmosphere, with plenty of comfortable (and iconic) lounge chairs where guests can relax with a book in-hand while enjoying the tunes from the near-by record player. Like the main entrance and lobby, which offer a lively and eclectic mix of mid-century furniture, lighting, art, and textiles, each of the 61 rooms and suites at Hotel Alexandra are uniquely decorated, focusing on a specific designer or style influence from the era. The beautiful room where I stayed, a Double Deluxe Room, happened to be dedicated to one of my favorite designers from the period, Arne Jacobsen. The room was wonderfully spacious and filled with a few of my most coveted classic designs by Jacobsen such as Swan and Egg chairs, and beautiful matte-black AJ lighting. The bathroom has been recently renovated, but decorated with coordinating lighting and tilework inspired by Jacobsen’s original patterning.

Amenities and Neighborhood
Beyond the incredible styling and warm hospitality at Hotel Alexandra, I can’t go without mentioning the amazing location within Copenhagen. It’s just a few paces away from the city’s beautiful Town Hall (where Sven and I got married) and there are plenty of restaurants and cafes just around the corner. Hotel Alexandra makes getting about the city even more convenient, offering bicycles on-sight for daily rental. And if you’re looking for Copenhagen travel tips, the hotel can provide you with endless ideas through their staff-vetted city guides that guests can easily access via smartphone. The morning breakfast buffet that’s hosted at Hotel Alexandra’s neighboring restaurant, Godtfolk, is also not to be missed – this can be booked with accommodations. Each night, guests are invited to enjoy a complimentary glass of wine in the cozy hotel lobby.
