A few hours east of D.C., you’ll find the charming ocean-side town of Lewes Delaware.
On Saturday morning, Sven and I made an early start for the beach. We baked fresh bread before getting on the road and made a stop at Trader Joes to load up my straw tote and Sven’s backpack with all types of fresh things for snacking. After driving through fields of corn and soybeans for quite some time, we finally arrived at the sandy shoreline of Lewes Delaware.
Even though we only visited for the day, going to Lewes felt like real holidays.
It was so nice to spread our blanket out in the sand and snack away on the yummy picnic we had packed. Avocado, tomato, cucumber, and goat cheese tasted so good together on the whole-wheat baguette Sven made! Honestly, I’m spoiled by this man and his baking skills đ
We napped in the sunshine and cooled of every now and again in the water. The sun was bright all day long and the breeze wasn’t much to speak of, but the ocean was crisp enough to make up for the lack of wind and shade.

After roasting in the sun for a few hours, we packed up camp and headed into the town center.
Lewes is a small town – far more picturesque feeling than most American beach towns. It’s known for being “the first town in the first” and still has a lot of it’s old-town charm which makes it even a bit more special. Being so tiny, it’s easy to explore all of Lewes in a single afternoon. There is a nice park that strolls along side the marina, and the main shopping area has a several cute stores and restaurants. Before hitting the road back to D.C., Sven and I snacked some pizza at a little cafĂ©/wine bar called Half Full – very tasty!
