When it comes to choosing furniture for our home, I like to take things slow — bringing in each piece one by one so that there’s a chance to build a harmony between the designs. The Oku Coffee Table by NORR11 is the most recent addition to our living room, and I couldn’t be happier with how well it ties together the space as a whole.
[AD] Following a design philosophy that bonds Scandinavian and Japanese tradition, the Oku table is a piece that’s defined by its simplicity and fine sculptural details. In addition to the coffee table, the series also includes dining tables in both round and rectangular forms. Kristian Sofus Hansen and Tommy Hyldahl are the talented designers behind the Oku series who sought to create a balance between lightness and heaviness by playing with the proportions of the table surface and legs.
In particular, I love the offset placement of the turned oak legs and their gentle bulbus form — a subtle irregularity that sets this design apart from other simple wood tables. Since launching the collection in 2017, NORR11 has completely reformulated the varnish as a water-base with a beautiful matte finish. This new formula is more eco friendly and safer for the environment, as well as the craftsmen and women who apply the color. We have the table in the dark smoked oak varnish, but it’s also available in natural oak, light smoked oak, and black. The dark smoked oak color gives the veneer and solid oak legs an incredible depth and richness, and I quite like the way it contrasts the light tones we already have in the room.
NORR11 is a Copenhagen based interiors brand with a focus on creating the next wave of design classics founded on timelessness and modernity. The pieces in their collection reflect a sensitivity towards form, craftsmanship, and functionality that runs deep in both Scandinavian and Asian design principals. Their range of products encompasses lounge seating, chairs, tables, lighting, and more — pieces that are each defined by their originality and quality.
