A Fragrance Journey With Frau Tonis

    July 31, 2020
Frau Tonis Parfum Berlin Perfume Atelier Custom Fragrance Store Interior Design Minimalist Aesthetic (18)

The fragrances we wear become a part of our being — an invisible aspect of our identity that’s personal and unique. Frau Tonis is a Berlin based perfume studio that allows you to create your very own custom blended fragrance, individualized by you in their stunning fragrance atelier.

Recently, I had the opportunity to create my own customized perfume with Frau Tonis. The experience took place in their newly renovated, absolutely gorgeous fragrance studio in the heart of Berlin. If you’re in Berlin and in the market for a new fragrance, I would certainly recommend embarking on a fragrance journey with Frau Tonis. It’s a truly unique experience that would also be wonderful to give as a gift, or do in a small group with friends.

During the workshop, a Frau Tonis fragrance expert will guide you through each scent — introducing all of their legacy fragrances one-by-one based on fragrance category. As you meet each scent, you can keep notes and mark the ones which appeal to you the most. Afterwards, the blending process begins and the fragrance expert will help you dial-in and combine your most favorite fragrances into a perfume that’s totally individualized to you. This is also a great workshop to take if you’re interested in learning more about the craft of perfume, and how each fragrance is blended to create balance.

And if you’re not in Berlin, you can still explore Frau Tonis’s perfume collection online. I also have their Citrus Grove set, and I love each of these three scents individually — they’re fresh, light and perfect for summer.

I’ve shared these beautiful ceramic pieces by KleoCo. before, but I’m sharing them again because they are still my absolute favorite and always perfect for everyday use.

If you didn’t catch my earlier interview with KleoCo. founder Murat Atasever, you can read that here. The brand produces a beautiful collection of slow-made porcelain pieces from their Antalya-based studio.

Sven made this awesome rhubarb tart a few weeks ago, and of course I had to snap a few photos because it was that pretty. I forgot to share them then, so I’m finally sharing them now. Marrying a man who bakes has for sure been one of my top-ten best life choices!

Flattered ~ Footwear For The Contemporary Soul

    July 13, 2020
Flattered Shoes Leather Footwear Timeless Fashion Scandinavian Style European Design Summer Vibes Beige Aesthetic Mies van der Rohe Haus Berlin Haus Lemke (10)

Flattered is a Swedish footwear brand specializing in beautifully handcrafted leather shoes, based on a self-described flirtation between Scandinavian simplicity and Southern European sensuality.

The brand’s Scandinavian sensitivity to design is obvious in each shoe they produce — shoes that are sure to carry a woman from season-to-season and made with a sustainable approach. Longevity runs deep throughout the Flattered collection, in both the aesthetics of the styles they create, and the skill and quality through which they are crafted. They specifically specialize in styles made from leather, and are deeply committed to using high-quality materials that come from chrome-free leather tanneries.

Keeping production near to home, Flattered works closely with a small network of European suppliers and manufactures, predominantly in Spain, who skillfully handmake each shoe. Their sustainable mentality is woven into many other aspects of the brand, as they’ve opted to use recycled packaging materials and dust bags made from organic cotton. They keep their collections small and thoughtful, producing only two collections each year — spring/summer and autumn/winter.

I absolutely love the pared-back approach Flattered has adapted, as well as the simple yet stunning styles in their current collection. A few pairs from Flattered have moved into my wardrobe, and I can certainly say that these shoes will be well-worn for the seasons to come.

Pholc ~ Expressive Lighting From Sweden

    July 8, 2020
pholc lighting mobil wall lamp black scandinavian interior design minimal home neutral aesthetic calm desk small home office rg daily blog scandi style (4)

The aspect I love most about lighting is it’s wonderful duality. It’s an element in a space that helps define the visual mood of the room while performing a highly practical purpose.

Lighting by Swedish brand Pholc always comes with a spectacular stylistic impact without giving anything up when it comes to functionality. Their collection is a stunning ensemble of pieces that go far beyond practicality. Each design is expressive and undeniably contemporary, with aesthetic attributes that reflect the brand’s Scandinavian roots. Pholc’s understanding for curating elegance in form, combined with their refined approach to material pairings, creates a commonality of sophistication within all of the designs they offer. And each of the talented designers Pholc collaborates with brings with them a unique spark.

Two of my favorite Pholc lamps recently moved into our home — pieces from the Mobil series, designed in 2016 by Dutch designer, Monika Mulder. Like Monika, all of the designers Pholc works with share the brand’s sensitivity to Scandinavian design, while creating pieces that embrace newness and originality through imaginative silhouettes that are implicitly now.

The name Pholc was derived from a Nordic word, meaning people. Their aim is to create lighting that’s impactful yet approachable — pieces that combine beautifully with the unique and diverse interiors we embrace on an individual level, based on styles that will endure for many years.

Gisou’s oh-so-good Honey Infused Oil is a daily part of my haircare routine. While the brand’s founder, Negin Mirsalehi, developed this product from a long-time family recipe, we actually have the honey bees to thank first for all its natural goodness!

Beyond making awesome haircare, Gisou is committed to protecting honey bees and hive growth. So that their customers can be a part of the efforts and learn a bit more about the importance of honey bees, Gisou is sending organic wildflower seeds with each order until the end of summer. Sowing wildflower seeds is an easy and fun way to help out our honey bees, who depend on blooming nature for nectar while pollinating plants and flowers. These seeds can be sown in your garden, or in flowerpots if you’re an urban dweller — to be enjoyed by you and the bees!

BRUNA The Label ~ Fine Jewellery For Everyday

    July 3, 2020
BRUNA The Label Gold Necklace Jewelry Handcrafted Jewellery Dainty Aesthetic Style Sustainable Fashion Minimal Timeless Summer Outfit RG Daily Rebecca Goddard Neutral (5)

Little golden details can completely change an outfit. Jewellery gives the clothing you already own a new life, adding depth to your wardrobe in a really small but impactful way. This summer, I’ve fallen in love with these whimsical pieces by BRUNA The Label — pieces I’ll for sure be wearing for the years to come.

The thing I appreciate most about BRUNA The Label is their story — the brand was born out of the founder’s desire to celebrate the beauty in natural imperfection, using Keshi pearls that are typically tossed to the way-side because of their irregularity and less-than-perfect forms. Helena, BRUNA’s founder, saw the raw and simple beauty of these delicate pearls, and she set out to incorporate them into the everyday fine jewellery she had always dreamt of. And so, the story of BRUNA The Label began.

Helena has kept the brand’s ethos true to its original starting point, with sustainability and consciousness still at the foundation of BRUNA. All of their pieces are handcrafted by small manufactures in Italy and Thailand, where their pearls are sourced. They keep their supply-chain small, and have taken extra steps to ensure ethical working conditions by only partnering with suppliers who have been approved by the Responsible Jewellery Council — a nonprofit organization that monitors human rights and labor conditions, while auditing the ecological responsibility and due-diligence of manufacturers.

BRUNA’s collection is simple and romantic — fine pieces that are versatile enough for everyday wear, that also work beautifully to dress up an outfit. They have styles available in rhodium dipped 925 sterling silver, as well as 18k gold vermeil on sterling silver. BRUNA is also a member of 1% for the Planet, dedicating 1% of their revenues each year to environmental nonprofits who are working hard to keep our earth healthy.

An Open Letter To Design Enthusiasts On Social Media

    July 1, 2020
iittala alvar aalto vase savoy cereal magazine minimal design classic iconic (1)

I’ve never used this space to share an opinionated article before. But today I want to bring up an important topic that’s been on my mind for a while. This is an issue that I can speak to on many levels, because I’m in a unique position that puts me on both sides of the equation. It’s a problem I’ve experienced first hand through my work as a designer, as well as a problem I myself have unfortunately propelled through my work as an interiors content creator and blogger.

The issue I want to talk about is something I see happening so often by my fellow design enthusiasts on social media, and it’s a mistake I’ve for sure made too! So let’s get into it. I’ve noticed that there seems to be a reoccurring habit in our online design-focused universe:

We celebrate brands and products without mentioning the designers.

I myself am guilty of this, without a doubt. Every time I share an image that features one of my favorite design pieces, I’m always diligent to mention the brand. This is something I see many people in my network doing, and I think we should keep it up because it helps those companies grow. But what about the designers behind those pieces who all-to-often go unmentioned?

Relationships between designers and brands are symbiotic. Designers depend on brands to bring their ideas to life, making them accessible in the consumer market. In the same way, brands depend on the imaginative minds and three-dimensional understanding of the designers they collaborate with. Both play an equally important role in the creation and development of the beautiful objects we fill our homes with. Yet many times, the designer’s name is blurred out of the story… especially when they are new on the scene. So, I’m making a request on behalf of all designers. The next time you highlight your favorite product or latest design obsession on social media, try to give recognition to the designer, as well as the brand. Maybe you already know the designer’s name off the top of your head, or perhaps you’ll need to do a quick search online to find out who was the creative individual or studio behind the piece you love — be it a lamp, table, vase, or coffee-cup.

By doing so, you’re likely to learn something interesting about the product and the person who conceptualized it. Knowing the story and the hand behind a design helps you better understand the context of the piece while expanding your appreciation too. And of course, acknowledging the designer will help them grow. Believe it or not, working as an independent designer is in no way a fast route to financial stability. It’s a journey that starts slow, picking up speed over time as you build your name in the industry — treading down this career path takes patience, resilience, dedication, and a whole lot of passion. In the worst situations, designers are completely cut out of the product story and left unpaid for their work by brands with low morals. I’d like to think this doesn’t happen often, but I’m sure it happens more often than we’re aware of. The recent, incredibly frustrating and unacceptable, situation between designer Simone Brewster and Swoon Editions is a prime example of this. As design enthusiasts, we must not only celebrate the work of designers, but we also must be willing to hold brands accountable when we see creatives being exploited for their intellectual property, especially when their work is unpaid or copied.

It might seem a bit self-serving for me to be publishing this letter, since I myself work as a designer — one who’s still quite green in my independent career. But let me be quick to say that this is not about clout — it’s simply about creating more acknowledgment that cultivates opportunity for hardworking creatives.

So, the next time you find yourself taking to social media to celebrate a design, please remember to celebrate the designer as well, not just the brand. Tag them in your posts, mention them in your captions, and celebrate their work and their name. It will help them be able to continue doing what they do — creating beautiful products that make your life and surroundings function better and feel nicer.

Summer Beauty Edit ~ Easy Everyday Products & Rituals

    June 26, 2020
Gisou Honey Hair Oil, Skin Regimen, Frau Tonis - summer beauty editorial product photography light shadow play neutral style beige aesthetic wellness rebecca goddard rg daily (1)

Summer is here, and that means it’s most likely time for a little beauty ritual re-evaluation. While some habits are good to keep all-year-round, it’s important to consider how your skin and hair-care needs change based on your summer lifestyle during these warmer days.

Many of us are spending more time outdoors right now. The longer summer days means more hours of sunshine for us all to enjoy, but that also means more sweating and increased exposure to damaging UV-rays and pollutants. I’m not going to start a long rant about the importance of wearing sunscreen — that goes without saying! Instead, I’m going to talk about a few summertime beauty rituals and products that will help keep you feeling nourished, glowy, and fresh. And these rituals are aimed to help you scale-back on other aspects of your beauty routine, like makeup and hairstyling with hot-tools.

    ~

The products featured in this article were gifted by each brand — but as always, all opinions and thoughts are my own.

    Skincare That Combats Pollution — /skin regimen/

When we think of summertime skincare, I’m sure most of us are fast to slather on extra sunscreen and moisturizer. But it’s also important to consider the other unseen elements our skin is exposed to while spending more time outside, like extra pollution, dust, and pollen. Look for facial cleansers, exfoliants, and moisturizers that are designed to clear and protect your skin from small dirt particles and free radicals in the air — especially if you’re living in an urban area with lots of traffic.

Complexion Revitalizing Rituals — La Coéss

Beyond your normal skincare routine, there are a few extra things you can do to keep your complexion radiant and glowing all summer. Try to spend a bit more time nurturing your skin, and in turn you’ll find yourself wanting to wear less makeup too. Be sure you’re hydrating your skin from the inside-out by drinking plenty of water, especially during these warmer days when we sweat more. But also, give your skin extra hydration by using a nutrient rich oil in combination with a facial massage tool like a jade roller or gua sha stone. Using these types of facial massage tools in combination with a hydrating oil will help increase the blood circulation below the skin to promote lymphatic drainage which decreases facial puffiness while improving your skin’s natural ability to purge dirt and sebum. It can also help to relax areas of the face where we tend to hold more tension, like around the eyes from increased squinting during hours in the bright sun.

Nourishing and Effortless Haircare — Gisou

Extra exposure to sun, wind, and water at the pool or ocean can be tough on our hair. It’s important to find haircare products that not only protect your locks, but also allow you to embrace your hair’s natural texture so that you can reduce the amount of styling needed with damaging hot-tools. Allow your hair to air-dry as often as possible, and use hair oils to lock in moisture, and help control frizz caused by increased summer humidity. Once a week during the summer, deeply moisturize your hair with an oil infused mask to keep your hair glossy and dryness at bay.

Fragrant Summer Refresh — Frau Tonis

Don’t forget that during these warmer summer days, we all sweat a little more! Having a light summer fragrance on-hand for a quick on-to-go refresh can make all the difference. It’s also nice to think about the fragrance you wear during the summer time, and how it could be different from whatever essence you enjoy during the winter. In the summer, I prefer to wear lighter perfumes based on citrus and other fresh fruits opposed to during the cooler months, when warm scents like vanilla feel more fitting. Regardless of the scent you prefer, don’t forget to pack something with you to refresh throughout the day, especially if it’s a hot one!

Life has been super busy lately, and finding time for nurturing my own creativity and visual interest has sort of fallen to the wayside – but today I did manage to get a little bit of inspiration in via Pinterest. The dreamy neutral details and summer vibes above are what caught my eye.

Originally, I had planned on publishing a beauty editorial today, but I’ve decided to push that article back until tomorrow so that I could spend a little bit of time feeding my own creativity, and reflecting a bit more on this busy week. These recent weeks have felt pretty jam-packed lately, even despite all the Corona slow-downs. I’ve been working on all sorts of exciting projects, and getting ready to head out on my first post-lockdown work trip at the start of next month. In July, I’ll be in Spain for a few days to work on the first collection shooting for FORESTA. I couldn’t be more excited! But we have a lot to get finished before our official brand launch in Copenhagen this September.

And of course, there are lots of exciting articles in the pipeline here for RG Daily. I really do enjoy sharing my little world with you all. I have quite a few projects to publish in the weeks to come with some truly amazing brands, so stay tuned.

Sven and I have been taking it easy most weekends, hanging out in Berlin mostly and just enjoying our home and neighborhood when we have the down time. At the end of the summer though, we are planning to go for our honeymoon (fingers crossed)! It’s nice to have that to look forward to. I’ll share where we are going a bit closer to the date.

Hope you all have a nice end to your week!

    Xx, Rebecca

H&M Home ~ Essentials For Every Neutral Interior

H&M Home, Beige Wool Rug, Grey Sofa, Coffee Table Styling, Light, Livingroom - Neutral Home, Scandinavian Interior, Natural Aesthetic, Minimalist Decor, Beige Style, RG Daily Blog

When it comes to timeless essentials, H&M Home is one of the first places I look for décor. I find that they always have a very nice selection of versatile pieces that are as stylish as they are affordable.

Of course you’re bound to find a lot of items that follow interior trends, but H&M Home is also a great place to look when you’re on the hunt for interior staples that will carry you from season to season — pieces that work in almost any home or room, regardless of your style specifics.

I’ve been shopping for interior basics at H&M Home for years now, while still being super selective with what I bring into our flat. I always look for pieces that I think will work in a few areas of the flat, or items that are really simple and easy to mix with other decorative elements. Some of my favorite, most flexible pieces I have around the home are items I’ve found at H&M, like my beige linen pillow covers, little glass bud-vases, or the neutral linen table cloth that also doubles great as a summer throw on the bed. In recent years, they’ve introduced new collections within their offering, like the Conscious and Premium-Quality collections, where you can find pieces that are designed with a less-trendy, more timeless home in mind, and made from higher-quality materials.

Focused on goods that make moments of self-care more enjoyable and natural, tautanz offeres a range of vegan soaps, solid shampoos, linen robes, and accessories for the bathroom. The brand is based in the Netherlands and was recently founded by Isabel Theissen. In the interview below, Isabel and I talk a bit more about her approach to conscious living, luxury sustainability in beauty and wellness, and how all of the products in the tautanz collection have been informed and inspired by her diverse world travels and time spent aboard.

An Interview with tautanz’ Founder, Isabel Theissen

Q: tautanz is all about conscious luxury with a focus on naturally long-lasting quality over quantity. What led you to create tautanz, and how did your relationship with conscious living begin?

“I always cared about the environment and tried to make conscious choices in my daily rituals. I grew up learning the basic things such as recycling, switching off the lights when leaving the room and turning off the water when brushing your teeth. Now, I make a more conscious effort to buy local, to use a green energy provider and to cycle where ever I can. But when it came to making more environmentally friendly choices in terms of the products that I use, I didn’t want to compensate for something less aesthetically appealing or luxurious. With tautanz, I’m bringing my values of sustainability and ethics and my love for modern and elegant aesthetics together.”

Q: All of the items in the tautanz collection are made by small manufacturers in Portugal. Can you tell me a bit more about your connection to Portugal and how you came to know the manufacturers who are producing your products?

“I lived in Portugal for the last 4 years before moving back to Amsterdam in the end of 2019. Moving to Portugal actually plays a big role in launching tautanz. Leaving the fast-paced fashion world that I worked in behind and having more time for myself, I made small changes in my daily rituals and switched to more natural products. As I enjoy using soap bars, I started researching natural soap producers and found this beautiful, small producer in the heart of Portugal. As I was based near Porto, I visited them personally and fell in love with their work and their ethics. I approached tautanz’ linen manufacturer in the same way and visited several manufacturers at the time. But I chose to work with the one that aligns the most with my values and standards.”

Q: Your natural soaps focus less on fragrance, and more on the benefit of each variety. How did you go about developing these different soaps, and what are the ingredients that makes them special for the skin and hair?

“It was important to me that the ingredients for tautanz soaps are 100% natural and come from local suppliers in Portugal. This allows me to ensure excellent quality under sustainable conditions. We don’t add any artificial perfumes, preservatives or colors. Instead, we work with natural scents of essential oils, such as pine and rosemary. Each bar features a unique attribute that I wanted to replace in my personal care routine with a natural alternative. The Olive Oil soap deeply moisturizes the skin and can serve as alternative for body lotion since the skin feels naturally soft and hydrated after showering. Charcoal & Pine works well as everyday cleanser. It brings the beautiful characteristics of activated charcoal with it, which gently removes dirt and grease. Rosemary & Clay is a natural body scrub. It has small, natural clay granules which mildly exfoliate the skin. Using it once or twice per week renews and refreshes the skin. tautanz wineleaf shampoo lathers in lush bubbles like a liquid shampoo and hydrates the scalp and hair. It was important to me, that the experience of using each of the soaps is as good, if not better than using a non-sustainable counterpart. Using the soaps became a happy moment of starting into my day in my own little ‘home spa’.”

Q: On your website, you mention that your love for natural linen sparked during a visit to Melbourne. Can you tell me a bit more about this discovery during your travels and how it inspired the tautanz bathrobe?

“When I visited friends in Melbourne, I was intrigued by all the beautiful homeware brands, particularly the ones focusing on linen. Although linen originates in Western Europe, I haven’t paid much attention to linen in Europe until then. I started reading about the beautiful features of linen, that make it such a sustainable, comfortable and luxurious fabric. Most of the time, linen is stonewashed though which consumes a lot of water during the production process. As I was based near Porto at the time, where most of Europe’s traditional, high-quality producers are located, I decided to create a line of linen homeware goods with untreated, natural linen. The robe is inspired by a loose, yet feminine kimono-style as I love the causal elegance it emits and how it flatters the feminine body.”

Q: What’s next for tautanz? Do you have any exciting new additions on the horizon?

“I have a lot of ideas for new products and projects for tautanz. However, I’m growing the brand slowly since I only want to launch products that I deeply care about. Currently, I’m working on a line of natural linen bath towels. I love the soft and light feeling of linen on my skin, which feels much gentler than cotton. It amazes me how much better it dries the skin compared to a regular cotton towel.”

Nuura ~ A Danish Lighting Brand That Balances Simplicity & Sophistication

    June 10, 2020
Nuura Lighting, Danish Design, Glass Table Lamp, Miira, Minimalist Home, Classic Interior, Timeless Style, Beige, Window, Shadows, White Scandinavian Decor, Neutral Aesthetic

Nuura is a young Danish lighting brand that every Nordic design lover needs to know.

Recently, a few striking pieces from Nuura moved into our flat. I absolutely love the way they have elevated the feeling in the space, especially thanks to their beautiful finishes like the brass pendant that now hangs in the center of our main living space. I find the little table lamp perfect as well, and it looks great on practically every table. They are designs that will never go out of style, and I’ll always have a place for.

Each of Nuura’s beautiful lighting collections are the embodiment of sophistication and timelessness that’s finished with a contemporary beat. Since their founding in 2017, many of their pieces have been quick to become design staples amongst the Scandinavian lighting landscape. Sofie Refer is one of Nurra’s co-founders and the lead designer of their collections thus far. Her work is inspired by the pureness of nature, and made to honor light through the use of elegant and refined materials such as mouth blown glass and metal. In the interview below, Sofie and I talk a bit more about the aesthetic foundation of Nuura, her approach to design, and the attributes that make the brand special.

An Interview with Nuura’s Lead Designer, Sofie Refer

Sofie Refer – Co-Founder and Lead Designer of Nuura

Q: The name Nuura means both light and honour. Can you tell me a bit more about how the concept of honour is woven into the brand’s philosophy and your designs?

“Our intentions with Nuura is to honour light, since lighting is so important and essential. Today we know that lighting it is extremely powerful and is proven to improve our mood and well-being. So, we find that there is a good reason to honour light and to be respectful when we work with lighting. The name Nuura means ‘light and honour’ in Nordic language, and it is our aim that our lighting will bring joy.”

Q: Nuura’s full spectrum of lighting is built from several unique designs that have been beautifully interpreted into collections which include chandeliers, pendants, and lamps for tables, floors, and walls. Do you typically start with a special design detail that can be translated across these categories of light fixtures, or does the process happen more fluidly with each collection?

“I typically start to design a chandelier. This is base on my intentions of honouring light, since the original purpose of a chandelier is to reflect generosity and joy. Each collection is centered around the chandelier and branched out into a lighting family including pendants, wall lights, table and floor lights. It is important for me that each piece is unique, and must stand alone, however carefully created to complete the family. I find that an entire lighting collection gives more opportunities to complete and interior decoration and bring harmony.”

Q: Your designs are undeniably sophisticated and elegant, yet have a wonderfully contemporary feeling. How do the materials you choose to work with play a role in creating this balance?

“In my work, I seek to balance a simplistic yet sensuous expression. It is important to me that the shapes and composition of my designs is simplistic. At same time I strive to create a sensuous expression by using exclusive materials and surfaces like golden metals and sparkling optic hand blown glass.”

Q: Although Nuura is quite a young brand, many designs have quickly become known staples amongst the Scandinavian lighting landscape. What aspects of your designs do you think have been contributing factors to this success?

“Our design and work around lighting is based on a set of values that we are determined to follow. It is important for us to that each design is authentic, and high design value. Just as we strive for highest quality in materials and production. We have a deep respect for how important quality light is for our life, and I hope this is reflected in our design and work. The fact that we offer larger chandelier and customized lighting in Nordic design style, is unique to Nuura and we are experiencing a growing international interest because of this.”

Q: Nuura is based in Denmark, where the winters are long and dark, and light is ever-fleeting. Do you think that living in the north has helped you develop your sensitivity to lighting and how it impacts living?

“The radical change of seasons in the Nordic lands, expands our notion on light. As much as we value natural light in the summertime, the more we are craving lighting in winter season. This intensifies our culture and creativity around superficial lighting. My designs are all inspired by Nordic nature. The Blossi Collection is inspired by the golden colours you find in the Nordic autumn. I wanted to reflect the beautiful golden indirect light you find in the autumn leaves. There is a deep inherent intelligence in nature, – it is beyond our understanding, but we all sense it, and it affects you in a positive way.”
