Decadent Copenhagen ~ Handmade Leather Bags Inspired by Timeless Danish Tradition

    December 21, 2019
DECADENT Copenhagen ~ Beautiful and Timeless Luxury Leather Hangbags / Danish Design, Scandinavian Style, Black Croco, Designer Bag, Vintage Aesthetic, Beige Winter Outfit | RG Daily Blog

Based in Denmark, DECADENT is a of collection luxury handbags and leather accessories, designed with Scandinavian timelessness and simplicity in mind, and handcrafted from the loveliest materials.

The brand was born out of Copenhagen in 2005 when DECADENT’s founder and creative director, Karina Mundt Holst, set out to recreate a much adored bag from the 70’s that belonged to her mother. Karina introduced this reimagined tote as the Working Bag – it’s simple silhouette and long-wearing leather construction has served as the foundation for the entire DECADENT collection. Like the Working Bag, chic details and classic forms are the aesthetic attributes that make up the extraordinarily crafted DECADENT line. The interview below with Karina Mundt Holst goes a bit deeper into the brand’s (almost) 15 year history, highlighting her long-term thoughts on timeless design and sustainability in the fashion industry, and how working with small manufacturers who she thinks of as family has led to the success of the brand.

An Interview with Karina Mundt Holst
    DECADENT’s Founder and Creative Director

Q – DECADENT is a name that certainly evokes a sense of allure and luxury. Can you tell me a bit more about the journey that led you to this name and what you hope it infers about the brand?

“I was for sure at journey as you say. When I started out almost 15 years ago, it was very popular as an upcoming company to name the brand your own name. But I was very aware about that, and I wanted to create a brand not based on my name. It was not me who was the interesting part, it was all about the product, the bag. So I had to look elsewhere and searched many places for the perfect name. I have always read all Danish fashion magazines and I read an article from Uffe Buchard, were he described a very luxurious, chick and decadent hotel in Istanbul. That word just got to me, Decadent, and I already knew that the production should be placed in Istanbul. and DECADENT just gave it an extra level and connection to Istanbul. Decadent has a meaning of something extravagant, something that you really do not need for survival. Decadent bags are all about that. It is that extra thing you add to your outfit to give it the right feel and look. “

Q – Before launching DECADENT in 2005, you spent several years working in the fashion industry. How did those years of experience guide you when you decided to launch your own brand? Did the motivation come from seeing opportunities to do things a bit differently?

“My past in the industry for sure gave me a motivation to do it my way. I have always had a very strong feeling that I would end up having my own company, as I like all aspects within a company and has a commercial approach. My saying has always been if I like a certain bag, several other will probably also like it, as my taste is like many others and very commercial. My past in the industry covers positions as; designer, buyer, sales and shop manager. So I had a lot of knowledge and it really helped me open doors in the industry as I started. I was not afraid of any of the aspects of building up a brand from scratch.”

    Interview Continues Below…

Q – DECADENT focuses less on trends, and more on timeless styles that are designed to transcend generations – like your iconic Working Bag. Yet you’ve seemed to find a balance between the past and now that makes the brand undeniably contemporary. What is it like to maintain this balance and has it been challenging to push against the fast-fashion mentality?

“It is hard to stay true to the DNA that you have put into the brand, which is my personal taste as well, but also a love for classic designs that will stand the test of time and various trends. My saying has always been, to make smart choices that will last for a long time, this is the core of everything we do in the company, from design, production and to which partners we should do business with and so on. We want women to feel empowered by the choices they make, when choosing long lasting item they will treasure for a long time, like our bags.”

Q – The DECADENT collection has a harmonious and timeless spirit – built on classic silhouettes, versatile colorways, and thoughtful yet subtle details. When introducing new designs into the collection, do you find yourself looking for inspiration from vintage styles? What other influences might manifest into the form of a DECADENT bag?

“I love finding vintage inspiration. The vintage feel really speak to me in a certain way and I can easily transit them into new designs. Actually in Istanbul there is a great vintage flee marked, and last time I was there, I found the most amazing original crocodile bag from the 1950’s. I go there with the creative owner of the small factory where all Decadent bags are produced. Everything I know about bag production I have learned from him. Although we do not speck the same language or can communicate in English, it has never been an obstacle for our collaboration.
I am also very much inspired by the great Danish interior design tradition, something about the simplicity and useful approach the great designers put into their designs inspire me. I always have those thoughts when I am in the design process. Does a certain bag have the right purpose and stylistic Scandi-look that we are aiming at? That is the key to all of my designs.”

Q – When it comes to manufacturing, DECADENT works with a very close circle of suppliers and craftsmen and women in Turkey. All of your bags are produced by a family-owned fabricator with over 40 years of expertise in high-quality leather crafting. Do you think that this close brand-supplier relationship has contributed to the success of DECADENT? I can imagine there’s an invaluable amount of trust there!

“Yes it has, that is for sure. I could not have done it with out them. I love them like family and I trust them. I will stay with them as long as possible. They believed in me from the beginning and gave my big advantages in the production allowing many colors and styles although my orders did not meet the necessary level for a production. They have assisted with their highly treasured skills to develop Decadents quality level to what it is today.”

Q – With timeless design, centralized manufacturing, and minimal packaging all attributes of the brand, DECADENT is already working with quite a sustainable mindset. Looking forward, do you see other opportunities to minimize your environmental impact – using chrome-free leathers for example?

“Yes we have a very sustainable mindset. That mindset was actually also a reason to start the company. I knew that I would not make production in the Far East and it is a mindset that has not changed since the beginning. I only wanted to make long lasting products that does not come from the other side of the world. I believe our production is environmental friendly, we have very high demands for the production in every aspect, for the people who fabricate, the leather from the animals that we use and also the impact we have on the environment. Can we do it even better; yes we can and we are on a path to do. Everything is a process and we do believe that Decadent in the nearby future will do parts of the collection with chrome-free leathers. This is an aria that is top of mind, and the suppliers are also now much better in delivering a nice product without chrome, this was not the case years ago.”

Q – Next year, DECADENT will be celebrating its 15th anniversary! I’m sure reaching this milestone is both gratifying and emotional – what accomplishments are you most proud of?

“I am most proud of that Decadent is still here and the brand status we have build. I am proud of my coworkers, suppliers and business partners, and what we together have accomplished. We are a very dedicated team and I love the process we are in. We work really hard and focus on still keeping Decadent marked relevant now running on its 15th year, as you know the fashion industry is really a tough business these days. Many of the companies that started out around the same time as I did, are not here anymore, this is a fact. We have a strong believe in the path we are on, and look forward to what the future will bring of different adventures.”

MUTI ~ Minimalist Skincare For Winter

    December 17, 2019
MUTI Minimalist Anti-Age Skincare - Winter Skin Care & Beauty | Product Photography, Packaging Design | RG Daily Blog

Winter isn’t coming… it’s here! And that means dry skin is yet again a topic. Midway through November, I began using a few new skincare products by MUTI and I have to say that my complexion hasn’t looked this even or hydrated in a long time.

I first discovered MUTI where I find most brands these days — Instagram. It was their beautiful photography and uncomplicated packaging that drew me in, but after reading a bit more about the types of ingredients they use, I was curious to give MUTI a try. I’ve been quite content with my daily facial cleanser, but I felt like it was time for a new moisturizer to protect my skin during the harsh Berlin winter and the MUTI system caught my attention because of its high-quality, anti-aging ingredients. If you’re interested in giving MUTI a try as well, you can receive a free Sample Set by visiting their website.

MUTI skincare essentials are unisex and really straight forward — designed to make moments in front of the mirror easy and simple.

Based out of Munich, the MUTI team has worked hard to create a small spectrum of products that moisturize, nourish, repair, and protect all skin types — using a combination of natural and synthetically produced active ingredients which they clearly describe online.

MUTI – skincare without parabens, silicones, mineral oils and paraffins.

I’m also quite fond of the thoughtful way MUTI has designed their packaging. It’s beautifully simple, and won’t create a cluttery look on your bathroom counter or cosmetic cabinet. Each unique product is color-coded on the top cap, making it quick and easy to snag the right cream-pot when switching between day and night moisturizers, and they’ve also broken down the range into three smart categories, FACE, ADD, and SUN.

    MUTI Products I’m Currently Loving

Vitamin C Serumwith natural nutrients to stimulate collagen formation, protect the skin from free radicals, and counter balance pigmentation.

Anti-Age Day Cream SPF 20with vitamin B3 to strengthen the skin layers, ectoin to protect against UV radiation, and hyaluronic acid to maintain moisture.

Anti-Age Night Creamwith macadamia seed oil to add nourishment, concentrated hyaluronic acid to blur away wrinkles, and ceramides to protect the skin overnight.

Anti-Age Eye Creamwith hyaluronic acid and active ingredients like plankton to help restore moisture, minimize fine lines, and energize the eyes.

Nobis Hotel Stockholm ~ Where Design Meets Tradition

    November 26, 2019
Nobis Hotel Stockholm, Scandinavian Design Hotels, Östermalm | Travel Sweden | RG Daily Blog

At Nobis Hotel Stockholm, Scandinavian design is beautifully blended with 19th century architecture, contemporary comforts, and the city’s kindest hospitality.

Sven and I checked in for a 3-night stay at the lovely and chic Nobis Hotel during a recent visit to Stockholm. Fabulously located on the edge of Norrmalmstorg Square and just a few paces away from the marvelous Strandvägen waterfront, Nobis Hotel is amidst the city’s finest sights, shops, and restaurants. Housed inside two magnificent stone structures that we’re built in the late 1800’s, the lavish yet contemporary interior at Nobis Hotel is wrapped in classic Scandinavian heritage. In 2010, these two (now adjoined) buildings opened their doors again to welcome guests from around the world after undergoing a thoughtful transformation led by Alessandro Catenacci, Owner and CEO of Nobis Group. Alessandro’s vision behind Nobis Hotel was imagined with the intention of redefining the concept of modern luxury travel. The exquisite interior, with its many grand and gleaming features, takes Nobis guests back to the golden age of grand hotels, yet this decadence becomes a bit more subdued and relatable thanks to smart and contemporary styling. Even the hotel’s iconic lounge, which is housed inside a spacious atrium with ceilings that sail 28 meters overhead, feels like a comfortable and inviting Swedish livingroom. During renovations, many of the buildings’ original architectural features were preserved or restored, such as the giant crystal chandelier and spiraling Shaker staircase in the hotel’s main entrance. These historic details are smartly contrasted by sleek and creative design that celebrates Sweden’s sensitivity to Scandinavian elegance.

    Accommodations at Nobis Hotel
Each of the 201 guestrooms at Nobis Hotel are equal in beauty, yet no two are exactly alike. A warm and neutral color palette sets the mood in each comfortable and cozy room, featuring a thoughtful mix of materials and textures that add interest and character (without feeling stuffy, generic, or over contrived). Many elements, such as the Pal lounge chairs, pastry-inspired Baklava lamps, and Herringbone carved wooden wardrobes, were all custom designed for Nobis Hotel. These warming features are contrasted by the gorgeous oasis of gleaming Carrara marble that guests will discover in each bathroom. When we weren’t relaxing in the stunning hotel lounge, Sven and I spent our time enjoying a calming and comfortable Deluxe room, with view into the white courtyard lounge.

    ~

    Nobis Hotel Experience
Beyond the comfortable rooms and relaxing lounges at Nobis Hotel, guests and locals alike can enjoy the hotel’s range of restaurants and bars – NOI, Bino, and The Gold Bar. Breakfast at Nobis Hotel is also not to be missed – a delicious and fresh Nordic inspired buffet. And guests who are really looking to relax can enjoy the hotel’s in-room massage service or wellness area, complete with marble clad steam and dry sauna, and fitness studio.

Fashion ~ 5 Tips To Help You Become A More Conscious Consumer

    November 20, 2019
Beige Wardrobe, Summer Tanks | Rebecca Goddard

Tune into the fashion industry right now and you’ll discover that environmental friendliness and social responsibility is picking up quite a bit of steam — and it’s about time too.

But what does it all mean, how can you take part, and why does it even matter? In this blogpost, I’ve decided to share a few tips and (hopefully) helpful insights on how to be a better, more conscious consumer. Consider this a mini crash-course on how to cultivate a new perspective on fashion.
    ~

5 Tips To Help You Become A More Conscious Consumer

    – Educate Yourself –
It’s no secret that knowledge is power, and being in-the-know is always the best way to empower and inspire yourself to make better, more environmentally and socially conscious decisions. Have you taken the time to dive into the dark depths of the fast fashion industry? A quick Google search, “fast fashion impact”, is a great place to start. In this article, I’m not going to get into the devastating details, but I do want to encourage you to do a bit of digging on the topic. There is a wealth of information online that reveals the depressing reality of this industry, and the tole it is taking on both people and our planet. Exposing myself this reality was the key factor that motivated me change the way I consume. To help get you started, here’s a list of a few documentaries that reveal the disappointing facts of fast fashion.
    ~

    – Understand The Brands –
Before you make a purchase, how often do you take the time to have a peek at the tag to see where that garment was made? Better yet, how often do you do a bit of research on a brand to find out what’s really going on behind the scene? While it does take some extra effort, get to know a brand’s practices before supporting them with your money. Stop buying from companies with questionable operations, and look for alternative companies with sustainable and ethical mindsets. So how can you tell if a brand is environmentally and socially friendly? A good place to start is by looking at the price tag. Cheap clothing (unless purchased second-hand, which is always the most sustainable option) has to be made cheaply. It’s made by human-beings who earn pennies per hour for their labor – from seed sowing for the fibers, to seam sewing for the finished products. Brands who are socially and environmentally responsible are typically proud of their practices and like to tell their costumers about it – after all, they are fighting the good fight. Some brands, such as Ivy & Oak and Everlane, have even gone as far as to share a fully transparent pricing structure and detailed supply chain report. The Good Trade, a resource platform which shares researched and reviewed information on ethical brands, is also a great place to go for discovering pre-vetted places to purchase when you have a wardrobe need arise.
    ~

    – Navigate Through Temptation –
We exist in an economy that is designed to instill want and never-ending demand. As someone with degrees in both marketing and design, I know for a fact that everyday each and every one of us has to navigate through an endless wave of advertisements, all strategically devised to play to our emotions and perpetuate this want. This structure isn’t going to change, which is why it’s important to set yourself up for better consumer success by consciously avoiding the temptations we’re constantly bombarded by. A great place to start is in your email in-box. How many emails are you receiving a day from fast fashion brands, reminding you to not miss their latest drop or blowout sale? Maybe it’s time to hit that unsubscribe button. How many unethical brands are you following on social media? Tap that unfollow icon and free yourself from distracting, want-perpetuating advertisements. This will also seriously help you steer-clear of impulse buys on top of reducing that unnecessary sense of “lack”.
    ~

    – Define Your Style & Refine Your Wardrobe –
So now, you’ve decided to avoid fast-fashion because you’ve exposed yourself to the environmental and human costs; you’ve learned how to look for ethical brands, and you can navigate around want-cultivating advertisements to curb impulse buys. The next step is to build a strategy for your wardrobe, and to define your personal style. Sound silly? Well, having a plan and direction will help you stay on track, making it easier to say “no” when a certain item doesn’t fit into the big picture. Make a wardrobe manifestation board or save your favorite styles on Pinterest, and refer back to these ideas before buying something. Does that shirt really represent your vision? Be critical and stay true. Over time, you will have a wardrobe that you love, appreciate, and (most importantly) feel confident wearing. Allow yourself to part ways with items that no-longer fit into your aesthetic concept, and say good-bye to the “fantasy-selfs” who you purchase clothing for that don’t actually represent who you are. Unfamiliar with the concept of a fantasy-self? Check out this video by minimalist, Janell Kristina.
    ~

    – Search, Consider & Save –
Need to add something new to your closet? Before heading to a high-street retailer or online shop (pre-vetted or not), spend a bit of time rifling through your local second-hand shops. As said before, buying second hand or vintage (regardless of the brand-name) is always the most environmentally friendly and economical option. As a woman who has worn it all, from designer labels to swap-party treasures, I’m proud to be a part of the sustainable fashion wave that is breaking the stigma of pre-loved clothing. There is nothing wrong — let me repeat, nothing wrong — with second-hand fashion. In fact, you should feel even more proud to be wearing a pre-loved garment because of what it represents for the environment and the overall social impact. When buying something new, consider it a bit before you make the purchase. Give yourself a day or two to think it over, deciding whether or not it’s going to fit into your visualized wardrobe. And instead of buying fast and cheap, save a bit for items that are ethically produced, high quality, and fitting into that vision. When you adapt these shopping ideologies, you’ll actually find more room in your budget for quality splurges because of the cost-savings that come from avoiding impulse buys and savvy second-hand shopping.

Flâneuse Atelier ~ Elegant Gold Jewelry For The Everyday

    November 18, 2019
Flâneuse Atelier Hoop Earrings - Delicate Everyday Gold Jewelry - Timeless Style, Minimalist Fashion, Dainty Design / RG Daily Blog

Timeless, elegant, and gleaming – golden jewelry has become my favorite wardrobe embellishment, adding romance and sophistication to any outfit.

Flâneuse Atelier is an online boutique offering affordable jewelry and artistic accessories for the home. Derived from the French verb flâner, or ‘one who wanders aimlessly,’ the name highlights the brand’s Parisian mindset. Their collection of jewelry, classic yet whimsical, is inspired by the elegant and carefree feeling one longs to discover while strolling the streets of Paris.

Aiming to make their pieces both accessible and durable, Flâneuse Atelier uses a range of 14k and 18k gold vermeil over solid silver or titanium steel. They also strive to use as little packaging materials as possible, carefully hand-packing each order together without any single-use plastic.

These beautiful pieces by Flâneuse Atelier have become a part of my everyday wardrobe, adding the perfect amount of feminin flair to my simple daily style. I’ve also enjoyed pairing the earring sets with pearl studs (like these), and layering the simple necklace with others in my jewelry box.

You can explore Flâneuse Atelier’s full collection of jewelry from the links below – art and other home accessories will be introduced soon!

Grand Hotel Kempinski High Tatras ~ A Relaxing Getaway To Slovakia

    November 7, 2019
Grand Hotel Kempinski High Tatras Mountains Slovakia | Travel Europe | Luxury Spa Hotels | RG Daily Blog

Hidden away in Slovakia below the snow covered peaks of the High Tatras Mountains and resting at the edge of a glistening alpine glacial lake, The Grand Hotel Kempinski High Tatras awaits to be discovered.

Visiting the Grand Hotel fells like an escape to a fairytale winter-wonderland – a place surrounded by enchanting nature where time seems to move a bit slower. The hotel’s interesting history began in 1893 when the first building was constructed as a holiday villa by Jozef Szentiványi, a wealthy Austrian-Hungarian nobleman. In the years to follow, two additional buildings were built – each with its own unique architectural style. Over the next decades, the hotel played host to many members of eastern Europe’s high society where the affluent came to relax and socialize. By the mid-twentieth century however, much of the hotel’s grandiose charm had been repressed due to communist influence, leaving the hotel to fall into a state of deterioration for the remaining half of the century. In 2003, plans were made to restore the Grand Hotel of the High Tatras back to its former glory, while preserving as much as the original historic details as possible. It is for this reason that each of the three adjoining buildings that make up the Grand Hotel are painted with a unique color scheme. Many of the original interior architectural features were managed to be revived during the renovations, such as the iron staircase banisters, lighting in the Grand Restaurant, and painted timber beams throughout the hotel’s great halls. For just over a decade now, the Grand Hotel Kempinski has been welcoming back guests who are seeking to discover the beauty of the High Tatras Mountains.

Grand Hotel Kempinski High Tatras – Vysoké Tatry-Štrbské Pleso, Slovakia

    ~

Accommodations at The Grand Hotel Kempinski

The Grand Hotel Kempinski has 98 luxurious guestrooms, including 22 suites. Each room offers a captivating view of the mountainous scenery that surrounds the hotel, with some rooms overlooking lake Strbske Pleso and others overlooking the sweeping valley beyond. Sven and I had the pleasure of staying in a Deluxe Lake View Room, complete with a balcony, comfortable king sized bed, lounge area, and spacious marble bathroom with a large soaking tub. We really enjoyed waking up each morning to a peaceful view of the lake from our bedside window. Even though we visited during a cold and snowy autumn week, our room (and the entire hotel for that matter) was incredibly well insulated and wonderfully cozy.

    ~

    The Grand Hotel Kempinski Experience

Despite the Grand Hotel Kempinski’s remote mountain location, there’s no shortage of things to do during your time there. Most guests come to the Grand Hotel for a Spa and Wellness retreat. The hotel’s luxurious Zion Spa was my favorite amenity, which offered a spectacular view of lake Strbske Pleso and the peaks of the Tatras mountains that sail high above – all to be enjoyed in the comfort of a fluffy white robe from one of the spa’s cushy lounge beds. The wellness area is wonderfully appointed with a fitness center, pool, and hot tub. Adult guests can enjoy the sauna, steam sauna, and refreshing lot of plunge pools and showers. Specialty massages and treatments can also be booked.

Breakfast in the hotel’s Grand Restaurant is not to be missed, and I would also highly recommend returning in the evening for a slow and decadent dinner. Sven and I enjoyed the delicious three-course chef’s menu, complete with pairing of local Slovakian wine that is only available at the Grand Restaurant. I would also suggest treating yourself to afternoon tea in front of the crackling fireplace of the Lobby Bar and Lounge.

And of course, no visit to the Grand Hotel Kempinski High Tatras would be complete without exploring the beautiful natural surroundings. There are many opportunities for hiking and winter sports in the area, and boats can be rented for lake Strbske Pleso during the summer months. Sven and I spent a few hours hiking up a snow covered trail to Vodopád Skok, a beautiful and pristine mountain waterfall. Click here to read my tips for hiking in the High Tatras Mountains.

    Cozy & Calming Autumn Bedroom

    November 5, 2019
Scandinavian Inspired Autumn Bedroom - Minimalist Decor | Neutral Bedding | RG Daily Blog Interior Inspo

Having a cozy atmosphere in the bedroom is so important as the winter days draw nearer.

With these autumn days quickly growing darker and colder, I’ve made a few changes to cozy-up our little bedroom here in Berlin. Small touches such as soft textiles and glowing candles bring so much warmth to a room! It’s been a longtime since I’ve written a blogpost about our home interior, so I wanted to share these snapshots today.

Quite a few pieces in our bedroom are vintage items I’ve come across – such as the white bedside table lamp, small and large white vases, bentwood chair, and art prints by Picasso. Before heading to the shops to find something new for your home, don’t forget to breeze through your local second-hand shops or even FB marketplace listings. You never know what type of beautiful pre-loved treasures you might find! The black bedside table is one I designed and built myself (years back as a design student), and the large line painting is also a “Rebecca original”.

Nuremberg Travel Journal ~ Autumn In Bavaria

    November 2, 2019
Nuremberg Germany - Traveling in Bavaria | Nürnberg Travel Guide | European Oldtown Architecture | RG Daily Blog

Although Nuremberg is the second largest city in Bavaria, and fourteenth largest in Germany, the cozy cobblestone streets and layered medieval architecture has the sense of a picturesque village.

Last weekend, Sven and I spent a few days exploring Nuremberg’s old town while getting lost in the charm of it all. The walled historic center, which is bisected by the River Pegnitz, is filled with quaint half-timbered houses contrasted by dramatic Gothic-era churches and medieval fortifications. Although the city is most famed for its idyllic Christmas Markets at Hauptmarkt, I found that the Autumn colors complimented the city’s rusty sandstone buildings just right.

Be sure to pay a visit to the Imperial Castle of Nuremberg which borders the northern edge of the wall and offers sweeping views of the city beyond. I would also recommend having a peek inside the Church of St. Sebaldus, which stands in front of Nuremberg’s City Hall. The interior of this church has an ambiance that is somehow both imposing and calming – with magnificent stone columns that seemingly stretch to the heavens. There are many more interesting sites to explore in the city, so I encourage you to go discover Nuremberg for yourself.

    ~

During our visit, we stayed at the Melter Hotel & Apartments – a comfortable and sleek design hotel in the heart of Nuremberg (hosted visit).

Vibeke Scott ~ Danish Loungewear & Interiors for Slow Living

    November 1, 2019
Vibeke Scott | Luxury Danish Loungewear, Silk Velvet | Slow Living | Calming Scandinavian Bedroom

Slow moments at home, calming and restorative, are sculpted by the elements that surround us – elements like buttery velvet robes and skin-soothing silk pillows.

Based out of Denmark, Vibeke Scott is a loungewear and interiors brand with nostalgic yet timeless design at its core. Their carefully assembled collection of dressing gowns, loungewear, kimonos, and small home accessories exudes Scandinavian elegance and quality – reminding us to return to a time when the garments we owned were treasured and adored.

Vibeke Scott was founded by two sisters, Nicole M. Langkilde and Chantall Scott. Since 1938, their family has had longstanding expertise in sewn-textiles through one of Scandinavia’s oldest flag manufacturers, Langkilde & Søn – a business that is also overseen by Nicole and Chantall today. However, their vision for Vibeke Scott was inspired by their grandmother, who bore the same name. Written on a small paper that accompanies each Vibeke Scott parcel, Nicole and Chantall share the inspiration behind their beautiful loungewear, and the formative role their grandmother played in inspiring the collection…

“We firmly believe that the purpose of a dressing gown is to add moments of luxury for the person whose shoulders it adorns – just like it did for our grandmother, Vibeke Scott. As young girls, we can remember seeing her at home, though she was dressing down to be comfortable when she wrapped herself in the elegance of a fabulous dressing gown, it seemed to us as though she was dressing up.” – Nicole and Chantall

As a woman with similar fond memories of my mother, grandmother, and aunts, this little excerpt resonated with me deeply. And after having come to age in the era of “athleisure wear”, I’ve grown to appreciate this more nostalgic, thoughtful, and delicate attitude towards “dressing down” for slow moments at home. It’s impossible to deny the way that slipping into a floor-skimming silk velvet robe will set the tone for a relaxing evening in, in the same way that applying your favorite shade of rouge sets the tone for a night out.

Although they are a relatively small brand, Vibeke Scott is seeking to go against the grain of fast-fashion in hopes of improving the industry and the future of our environment. Instead of releasing new items each season, Nicole and Chantall have made the conscious decision to put the items in the Vibeke Scott collection on a pedestal – celebrating their timelessness, beauty, and longevity. Their dream is for their products to have long and purposeful lives that evolve overtime as they patina. Vibeke Scott has also taken other small measures to reduce their environmental footprint, such as shipping items without single-use plastic packaging, and using a universal product care-instruction card in order to cut back on paper waste.

You can explore their full collection of loungewear, robes, and home accessories from the links below.

The Melter Hotel & Apartments ~ A Design Experience In Nuremberg

    October 30, 2019
Melter Hotel & Apartments | Nuremberg Germany Travel | Scandinavian Design Hotels | RG Daily Blog

Hidden behind a beautiful sandstone façade in the bustling heart of Nuremberg’s oldtown, you’ll find the soothing and chic Melter Hotel & Apartments.

Sven and I checked into the Melter Hotel during our recent trip to Bavaria. In contrast to the medieval and charming city that plays host to the hotel, the Melter is an oasis of contemporary design filled with cosmopolitan flair. We had the pleasure of staying in a spacious and relaxing Comfort Apartment, with a view of the historic pedestrian street just below our window. All 53 apartment-style rooms at the Melter are wonderfully appointed. Each is equipped with a sleek and functional kitchenet, Nespresso coffee machine, air-conditioning, wifi, and large television – making this hotel a great pick for longer stays. However, what I enjoyed most was the warm hospitality and Nordic-inspired interior styling, with thoughtful design details in every corner.

Melter is located in the center of Nuremberg, and only a 10 minute walk to the main train station and 15 minutes to the city’s famous castle. The neighborhood has many opportunities for sight-seeing, shopping, and dining. Be sure not to miss breakfast at the hotel’s onsite eatery, MONDO.

Autumn Street Style ~ Black & Beige

    October 29, 2019
Autumn Street Style, Black & Beige Minimalist Outfit | DECADENT Copenhagen Handbag | Vintage Trench Coat | RG Daily Blog

No matter the season, it’s difficult to go wrong with a black and beige combo.

Over the last few months, I’ve focused on building a wardrobe that is completely compatible. Nearly everything that hangs in my closet can be mixed and matched, and this factor alone has wildly simplified my getting-ready process. After saying goodbye to the bright colors and over-stylized patterns that no-longer reflect my personality, I was left with a neutral spectrum that starts with white, ends with black, and has a beautiful range of brown and beige tones in-between. This pairing down has not only simplified dressing at home, but also packing for travels.

During our recent visit to Nuremberg, I spent the day strolling the city in this easy-going autumn outfit. Sneakers were my go-to footwear for the afternoon, giving this look a casual Sunday feeling. But this sweater dress, trench coat, shoulder bag combo would take on a completely different vibe if paired with semi-shear black tights and block-heel ankle boots.

An Interview with ECO ~ Sustainable Eyewear by MODO

    October 23, 2019
ECO Eyewear by MODO ~ Sustainable Fashion, Sunglasses | Brand Interview | Product Photography | RG Daily Blog

ECO Eyewear is an environmentally conscious collection of glasses and sunglasses produced by MODO – a brand that has been raising the sustainability bar in the eyewear and fashion accessories industry.

ECO produces eyewear using recycled metals, and plant-based plastic alternative – their packaging is also made from recycled fibers, and the company plants a tree for every frame sold. So far, ECO has planted over 2 million trees! To get to know the brand a little better, I reached out to MODO’s CEO, Alessandro Lanaro. In the interview below, we dive a bit deeper into MODO’s history and Alessandro’s vision for a more environmentally conscious future. Alessandro started the company in New York in 1990 – since then he has expanded MODO internationally, with offices in Stockholm and Milan. Beyond striving for sustainability, MODO’s philosophy focuses on clear forms and clever design which have been inspired by the cities the brand calls home.

An Interview with MODO’s CEO, Alessandro Lanaro

Q – What inspired MODO to take a stand for sustainability, and where did the ECO story begin?

“MODO has Purpose as one of its pillars. With MODO we have helped over 1 million children in India with their eyecare needs. Looking into a collection made in a sustainable manner was the next goal, and ECO was born. We are proud to be leading the industry in creating sustainable eyewear.”

Q – A large portion of the ECO collection is produced using a special biobased material derived from Castor seed oil. Was this material something that was developed by ECO? What’s the story behind this interesting and innovative plant-based plastic alternative?

“We were offered the material by a French Chemical company. We immediately tested and found the right balance to produce eyewear without compromising quality. We are still working with them to continuously improve our sustainable component.”

Q – ECO is also working more sustainably by leveraging the use of recycled materials. Some of your frames are produced using 95% recycled stainless steel. What was the process like in finding a supplier who consistently meet these post-consumer margins, and how involved is ECO in the re-processing of these metals?

“Finding the proper source for our material was challenging, but we are very proud to be the only company to be certified by UL Environment, the most credible certification company for environmental claims. We are involved in repurposing excess plastic materials that result from the creating of a plastic eyewear front.”

Q – Through your One Frame – One Tree pledge, ECO plants a tree for every set of frames sold. So far, more than 2 million trees have been painted! However, this is quite an involved environmental undertaking that obviously doesn’t happen automatically. How does ECO coordinate the planting of all these trees, and what inspired the brand to make this commendable commitment?

“We have been working with a great NGO, Trees for the Future, and have a very close relationship with their organization as one of the leading sponsors. Our work goes far beyond the planting of trees. We sponsor the education of farmers that are planting the trees. Through our programs we have taken out of poverty many thousand of individuals. One Frame – One Tree was our concept of combining sustainability in our products with a social responsibility action. Planting trees was a very natural choice.”

Q – Does MODO plan on taking further action for re-forestation in the wake of the fires that have been ravaging the amazon rain forest?

“We want to continue with even stronger commitment to planting trees. Our customers are supporting our cause even more enthusiastically and their efforts will result in more trees being planted.”

Q – What else is ECO doing to reduce the brand’s carbon-footprint and total environmental impact? Is ECO weaving this ethos for environmentalism into other product aspects such as packaging?

“We are about to launch the first non-plastic eyewear bag, which has been the standard single use plastic protection for transporting frames. This new material will be made with an alternative to plastics and will hopefully become the standard – not only in ECO but on all products we produce. Hopefully the industry will follow our example. Obviously all other packaging is made from recycled materials, including the case.”

Q – Do you see ECO as a role-model within the industry – inspiring other brands to adapt a more sustainable mindset?

“Definitely. We already see companies taking inspiration from what we have started. We are happy to lead the industry in making our products both sustainable and socially responsible. I believe that we are creating four winners: ECO wins by having the customers’ vote with strong sales, our retailers win by showing their commitment to companies that care, our customers win by helping the environment without sacrificing style, quality or price, and finally the environment clearly wins! It’s a win-win-win-win situation!”

Q – What are your thought for the future, and how do you see ECO developing in the years to come?

“We will continue our efforts and place even more attention to innovations that will allow us to create products that are more sustainable and that support the improvement of our planet with a social responsibility aspect always aligned. We have great projects in the making and lots of testing in process. Stay tuned…”
