Autumn Aesthetic ~ October Inspiration

    October 22, 2019
Autumn October Aesthetic ~ Pinterest Inspiration Mood Board | RG Daily Blog

The change of the seasons always has me looking for new inspiration, and now that the weather is getting colder my focuses has shifted to warm autumn hues of browns, beige, and chocolatey nougat.

Above are a few images that have made their way onto my Pinterest boards lately – some very beautiful inspiration for autumn. Right now, the leaves are changing colors and the streets of Berlin have been confettied by a spectrum of deep orange and brown. I’m appreciating it as much as I can in the moment since, before long, we’ll be plunged back into a dark and grey winter.

Berlin Weekend Travel Guide ~ Culture & Classics

    October 21, 2019

Berlin is a city famed for its edgy vibes, underground sub-cultures, and quirky energy. However, Germany’s capital still possesses a wealth of cultural richness and historic classicism to remind us of the city as it was centuries ago.

In this Culture & Classics Weekend Travel Guide to Berlin, I focus on places in Berlin that still offer a sense of classic European grandeur reminiscent of pre-war times. Below you will find a range of ideas and suggestions for a weekend in the city, with history, culture, and quality at the forefront of my requirements for recommendation. Scroll down for my detailed list on where to stay, what to do, and where to drink and dine. For each recommendation, I have included links to both the establishments’ website and google maps. I hope you enjoy Berlin!

    – Where To Stay In Berlin –

    Hotel Adlon Kempinski Berlin

Waking up at the Adlon, a glimmering view of the Brandenburg Gate just outside your window, is like waking up in the midst of history itself. Standing at the edge of Pariser Platz, the Hotel Adlon is at the heart of Berlin. Since first opening it’s doors in the early 1900’s, the Adlon became renown as ‘one of the most beautiful hotels in the world’ – a place where Europe’s high-society went to meet and be seen. The original Hotel Adlon was destroyed shortly after WWII, and wasn’t rebuilt until after the fall of the Berlin Wall many years later. Today, the hotel welcomes guests travelling from all parts of the world, who share an appreciation for quality hospitality and historic grandeur.

    – What To Do In Berlin –

Stroll Down Unter den Linden Avenue

This magnificent boulevard runs 1.5 kilometers through Berlin Mitte’s most grandiose quarter. Stretching between the Brandenburg Gate and Schlossbrücke, Unter den Linden Avenue is lined by some of the city’s most iconic institutions such as the Hotel Adlon, State Opera, Humboldt University, Neue Wache Memorial, Zeughaus, and many other noteworthy addresses.

Walk Through Nikolaiviertel – Berlin’s Old Town

Nikolaiviertel is an idyllic quarter in Berlin Mitte with history dating back to medieval times. During the middle ages, the area was a residential district for tradesmen and merchants because of it’s central location along the Spree. In this small quarter, you can see some of the city’s oldest architecture and buildings, such as St. Nicholas Church. During the Second World War, the area was mostly destroyed but has since been rebuilt in its original style.

    Explore Museum Island

Home to the city’s Lustgarten, Berliner Dom, Altes Museum, Alte Nationalgalerie, Neues Museum, Vorderasiatisches Museum, Pergamonmuseum, Bode Museum, and soon-to-open Humboldt Forum (Berliner Schloss), Museumsinsel is not to be missed. Before setting-off into one of the island’s famous museums, spend a bit of time exploring the grounds and gardens while admiring the interesting mix of classic and contemporary architecture.

If you’re interested in spending a day discovering the history and art inside the island’s 5 art museums, I would recommend purchasing a Museum Island Day-Pass. Adult entrance costs 18 euro, and entrance for those under the age of 18 is free. You can purchase the day-pass online or at one of the museums.

    Visit The Gemäldegalerie

Away from Museum Island, but only a short distance from Potsdamer Platz is the Gemäldegalerie. Here, you will discover a wonderous painting collection, with over 1500 masterpieces from the 13th to 18th century. Works from Giotto, Botticelli, Raphael, Caravaggio, Vermeer, Rembrandt, Rubens, Van Eyck, and many more masters of European painting are there to be observed in a beautiful sequence of well organized galleries. I highly recommend spending a peaceful afternoon at the Gemäldegalerie, drifting from room to room while soaking in the impressive mastery and diversity of this historic collection.

    – Cafés, Bars & Fine Dining In Berlin –

    GROSZ Kaffeehaus

If you’re looking for a café that offers decadent vibes and old-world feelings, be sure to pay a visit to GROSZ. This coffeehouse, restaurant, and bar is situated on the city’s premier shopping boulevard, Kurfürstendamm Avenue, and is housed inside a century old building that was originally designed to serve as a luxury apartment hotel. After being renovated in 2010 as a heritage site, GROSZ opened with a menu and interior inspired by the buildings lavish history.

    GROSZ Kaffeehaus — Kurfürstendamm 193

    Café im Literaturhaus – Wintergarten

Tucked away in a hedge-lined garden off Kurfürstendamm Avenue, you’ll find the neighborhood’s best kept secret, Café im Literaturhaus. This café/bookstore is set in a beautiful and historic 19th century Wilhelminian villa, and is the perfect retreat from the bustling streets beyond. Sven and I have come here many times to enjoy a glass of wine, or cup of coffee in the peaceful garden or airy atrium – places where time seems to move a little slower.

Café im Literaturhaus — Fasanenstraße 23

Käfer – The Reichstag Rooftop Restaurant

Käfer is located atop Germany’s parliament building – offering sweeping views of the city and a delicious assortment of desserts and drinks. Because of this restaurant’s high-security location, dining here requires a bit more planning in advanced. In order to visit, you must make an online reservation, confirm your reservation and DOB via email, and passthrough the official security at the Reichstag’s entrance. Don’t forget to bring your official government issue ID! When you arrive at the foot of the Reichstag, simply tell the security that you are there to visit Käfer and they will direct you to the correct entrance.

    ORA Restaurant and Bar

This 19th century pharmacy-turned-restaurant and bar has an unforgettable ambiance that will make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. Formerly the Oranien-Apotheke, ORA is now a stylish yet classic destination for dining and drinks. Many of the interior fixtures are in their original status, such as the carved wood medicine cabinets and lovely tile floors. The exterior neon sign is also original to the pharmacy, and tells the story of how this charming restaurant earned its name – O, R, and A are the only letters that remain illuminated.

Beige Layers & Staggered Pearls ~ Autumn Fashion

    October 14, 2019
Autumn Beige Aesthetic ~ Minimalist Fashion, Gold Jewelry with Pearl Earrings - RG Daily Blog

Layers are the key to creating interesting but simple autumn looks. It’s also the best way to maximize the pieces in your wardrobe – using different combinations of clothing and jewelry you already have to create combinations that feel completely new.

Since the weather has shifted, I’ve been practically living in this beige trench – layering it with other knits to add texture and warmth. Layering my jewelry and earrings is something else I’ve been doing quite often. I only recently added the second piercing to my ears, thanks to my younger sister who sold me on the idea – we got the piercings done together. Having a second opportunity for earrings has been surprisingly useful! I love the way these teardrop pearl earrings look when staggered with classic pearl studs or small gold hoops. I find that, in the same way layering clothing adds depth to an outfit, mixing different jewelry styles can also add a bit of a modern flair to an otherwise basic look.

The High Tatras Mountains ~ Hiking in Slovakia

    October 13, 2019
High Tatras Mountains, Slovakia Hiking, Vysoké Tatry, Štrbské Pleso Lake ~ Travel Guide Eastern Europe, Autumn Nature ~ RG Daily Blog

The High Tatras Mountains are unquestionably the natural jewel of Slovakia, and one of Eastern Europe’s most breathtaking retreats for nature and hiking. Hidden within their imposing peaks is a world of untouched scenery and awe-inspiring views.

The High Tatras are a part of the Carpathians, a mountain range that sweeps primarily through Slovakia, Poland, Ukraine, and Romania. Breaching the southern boarder of Poland, the High Tatras Mountains are the tallest segment of the Carpathians with elevations that reach to 2,655 meters at their highest peak, Gerlachovský štít.

    ~

    Hiking The High Tatras Mountains

During our recent visit to Slovakia, Sven and I did a bit of hiking in the Tatra National Park. Even in the beginning of October, we were still met with plenty of snow and ice on the trail. Our hike began at Štrbské Pleso, a beautiful glacial lake in the region of Vysoké Tatry with clear waters that reflect the sailing mountains beyond. There are many opportunity for hiking in in this area, and we decided to take the trail to Vodopád Skok, a 30 m tall waterfall that cascades between the rocky granite of Mlynická Valley. The trail, which is marked in yellow, continues past the waterfall and leads to a second glacial lake, Pleso nad Skokom. Hikers who are up for a bit more mountaineering can continue further to discover four more glimmering lakes on the trail – Nižné Kozie, Capie, Vyšné Wahlenbergovo, and Nižné Wahlenbergovo. After we reached the base of Vodopád Skok, Sven and I decided to hike back since the weather conditions were becoming ever-more difficult and neither of us were really equipped with proper ice trekking gear. I certainty would have liked to hike further if we had been better prepared – the scenery was other-worldly stunning! Having started out on the opposite side of Štrbské Pleso at the Grand Hotel Kempinski, the round-trip hike to Vodopád Skok took us about 4 hours in total.

Check out this link for info on other hiking trails in the area – Top 5 Best Hikes in The High Tatras.

    Vysoké Tatry

The Vysoké Tatry region is at the feet of the High Tatras Mountains, offering the best accessibility to hiking, outdoor sports, lodging, and major resorts in the area. In Vysoké Tatry, you can access everything you need for your time in the mountains while enjoying some breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks. From the country’s capital, Bratislava, it take around 4 hours to reach Vysoké Tatry by auto.

Vintage Beige Trench Coat by StudioKôr ~ Sustainable Fashion

    September 27, 2019
Beige Vintage Trench Coat | Sustainable Second-Hand Fashion | Classic Minimalist Style | StudioKôr Berlin

If you’re looking to add a new item of outerwear to your wardrobe this season, consider investing in a timeless vintage piece or second-hand treasure before heading straight to the high-street retailers. Recently, I added this oh-so-classic beige vintage trench to my closet from StudioKôr. It’s the best investment I’ve made all year, and of course, pre-loved vintage = more sustainable.

The detail I love most about this trench is the subtle plaid patterning of the fabric. When looking for a wardrobe staple, such as a neutral coat, I search for pieces that are timeless and classic, with a few interesting details to create a special feeling. This trench definitely hits all the marks.

StudioKôr is a Berlin-based curator of vintage fashion with sustainability at the heart of their ethos. They recently launched their online shop where you can browse and buy items – a perfectly timeless selection of women’s garments and accessories. The shop was founded by Laura Pausewang, who hand-curates StudioKôr’s entire collection with “the conscious modern woman in mind”. You can follow StudioKôr on Instagram to see when new items are added to their shop.

The Adlon Kempinski ~ Berlin’s Most Iconic Hotel

    September 26, 2019
Hotel Adlon Kempinski | Brandenburg Gate | Luxury 5 Star Hotels | Berlin Weekend Travel Guide | RG Daily Blog

The Adlon Kempinski is undoubtedly one of Europe’s most exquisite and significant hotels. Sven and I had the great pleasure of visiting the Adlon for two nights, and I can not imagine experiencing Berlin in a more unforgettable way. Waking up at the Adlon, a glimmering view of the Brandenburg Gate just outside our window, felt like waking up in the midst of history itself.

“The Adlon belongs to Berlin, just like the Brandenburg Gate next to it.”
    — Guide Michelin, 2014

    ~

Hotel Adlon Kempinski – Unter den Linden 77

Standing at the edge of Pariser Platz, and just a stones-throw-away from the Brandenburg Gate, Tiergarten, and the Reichstag building, the Hotel Adlon is at the heart of Berlin. While many regard Berlin as a city with no true center, it’s impossible to deny the relevance of these city landmarks which have been at the epicenter of Berlin’s vibrant and tumultuous history. Since first opening it’s doors in the early 1900’s, the Adlon quickly became renown as ‘one of the most beautiful hotels in the world’ – a place where Europe’s high-society went to meet and be seen. Today, the hotel welcomes guests travelling from all parts of the world, who share an appreciation for quality hospitality and historic grandeur.

    ~

    The History of The Adlon

The Hotel Adlon was brought to life in 1907 by Lorenz Adlon, a gentleman of Berlin who had the vision of opening the most opulent hotel the world had ever known. The hotel was fast to become an internationally recognized institution of Berlin and the most fashionable place amongst society, attracting royalty, diplomats, artists, and actors. As hardship and war befell Berlin, the Adlon managed to remain standing but tragically burnt to the ground only a few days after the end of WWII. As the city fell into the next dreadful period of division, the Adlon was reduced to a pile of ruins east of the Berlin Wall, but the memory of the grand hotel remained alive in the hearts of Berliners and guests around the world.
Hedda Adlon, the daughter-in-law of Lorenz Adlon, dreamt of a day when the Adlon would stand again and gave rights in her will to see it rebuilt. When the wall fell in 1989, Kempinski immediately recognized Hedda’s final wish and began planning the reopening of the grand hotel. In 1997, almost 90 years after the original opening, the Hotel Adlon once again welcomed guests. The building was designed in a manner reminiscent to that of it’s former aesthetic, with details such as the sandstone façade and patinaed copper roof remaining the same. Throughout the interior of the hotel, guests can admire features that call back to the style of the original Adlon, such as the famous elephant fountain and crystal chandeliers of the grand ballroom.

Click here to see photos of the original Hotel Adlon.

    ~

    Accommodations at the Adlon

The newly constructed Adlon was built slightly larger than the original hotel, with a variety of 385 rooms and suites. During our stay, Sven and I were situated in a beautiful and spacious Junior Suite that offered a remarkable view of the Brandenburg Gate. While the view was my favorite aspect of our room, I can’t go without mentioning the outstanding comforts we enjoyed. The interior – a tasteful ensemble of luxe finishes and classic furnishings – had thoughtful styling reminiscent of the hotel’s golden age without skipping a beat when it came to contemporary comforts. We found ourselves completely at home in both the kingsized bed and marble bathroom. I will also note that although our room overlooked one of Berlin’s busiest tourist destinations, we were not the least bit disturbed by the noise level below. With the windows shut, the chatter of happy tourists and rumble of traffic was not to be noticed.

    ~

    The Adlon Experience

Beyond being a luxury hotel, the Adlon remains as a place for meeting and enjoyment. Hotel guests and visitors alike can enjoy a wealth of amenities, such as the beautiful Lobby Lounge and Bar, Sra Bua Restaurant and Bar, Restaurant Quarré, and Lorenz Adlon Esszimmer – Hotel Adlon’s 2 Michelin Star restaurant. For overnight guests, the buffet breakfast in the Bel Etage dining room is not to be missed – followed by a dip in the pool and visit to the sauna. A full service day spa is also onsite, where guests can enjoy a variety of beauty, massage, and relaxation treatments.

Berlin Gemäldegalerie ~ A Soothing Experience in Classic Art

    September 23, 2019
Berlin Gemäldegalerie, Classic Art Museum - Soothing Interior with Historic Paintings | RG Daily Blog, City Travel Guide

Berlin is a city rich in history, culture, and art. With countless museums and galleries scattered throughout, it’s easy to find a genre that appeals to every taste. However, enthusiasts for the classics will find themselves most at home at the Gemäldegalerie.

The museum hosts a wonderous collection, with over 1500 masterpieces from the 13th to 18th century. Works from Giotto, Botticelli, Raphael, Caravaggio, Vermeer, Rembrandt, Rubens, Van Eyck, and many more masters of European painting are there to be observed in a beautiful sequence of well organized galleries. Sven and I spent a peaceful Saturday afternoon at the Gemäldegalerie, drifting from room to room while soaking in the impressive mastery and diversity of this historic collection.

    ~

    The History of The Gemäldegalerie

While each painting in the collecting has an interesting story, the Gemäldegalerie collection itself also has an intriguing past. Berlin’s Museumsinsel was the original home of the Gemäldegalerie. In 1830, the collection was installed in the Royal Museum Building (now today’s Altes Museum). In 1904, the large collection relocated to the Bode-Museum, where it remained for the first half of the century. During the Second World War, the Bode building was heavily bombed and over 400 large-scale works were destroyed. As hardship and division befell Berlin during the second half of the century, the Gemäldegalerie collection was also divided. Half of the paintings remained at the Bode-Museum in East Berlin, while the other half was moved west to Berlin-Dahlem. In 1998, the collection was reunited at Berlin’s Kulturforum, where it is currently exhibited.

    ~

    Visiting The Gemäldegalerie

The Gemäldegalerie is located along the southern edge of Tiergarten, a short distance from Potsdamer Platz. The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday, with hours varying depending on the day. You can find their opening times listed here. Tickets can be purchased online or at the museum’s reception desk, and it’s possible to pay with both cash and credit card. Admission costs vary depending on the exhibitions you wish to visit (admissions for the permanent painting exhibition is 10 euro). Audio guides are included with admissions and available in several languages. Lockers and coat-check are available for guests on the lowest floor.

Recently a great mix from Meraki moved into our home — including: lotion, hand soap, skincare, haircare, bath textiles, candles, and dish soap. Thanks to the thoughtful design of Meraki’s packing, these everyday items look beautiful around the home. I also love how gentle the skincare range is, and everything smells absolutely incredible. A Study of Light and Shadow ~ European Summer

    August 30, 2019
Shadows and Light ~ Summer in Beige, European Travel Snapshot | RG Daily Blog, Copyright © Rebecca Goddard

“All the variety, all the charm, all the beauty of life is made up of light and shadow.”
    — Leo Tolstoy

After enduring a seemingly sunless winter in Berlin, I’ve been absolutely mesmerized by the beautiful yet ever-fleeting effects of sunlight. During the long winter months, the sun seemed to be swaddled by a thick blanket of grey. At first the world can feel cozy under this blanket, but as the days wear on it’s impossible to ignore how flattened life begins to feel. These winters, flat and sunless, have given me a deepened appreciation for the summer sun – a sun that beams with bright and invigorating energy. It is the summer sun that brings contrast and depth to the world, unveiling a realm of hidden forms and ever-shifting lines while exposing the beautiful shadows that exists on the opposite side of its lustrous intensity.

As Sven and I have traveled this summer, I’ve paid more attention to the life in an image created by light and shadow. This post contains a few of my favorite images from this summer, featuring warm beige scenes with vivid highlights and long shadows.

Dreamy Beige Aesthetic ~ Pinterest Inspiration

    August 28, 2019
Dreamy Beige Aesthetic ~ Pinterest Inspiration Mood Board | RG Daily Blog
Here are a few of my most recent Pinterest saves – I’m clearly still hung-up on warm hues, moody shadows, and old mixed with the new.

Unlike Instagram, I love the focused inspiration that Pinterest gives me, and how I can organize all of these visual ideas into different categories that are easy to come back to. There are so many beautiful images out there – images that have helped me refine my own eye for color, light, composition, and style.

Hope you all are having an enjoyable and productive week!

    – Rebecca

CONSIDERED ~ A Magazine for Sustainable & Mindful Lifestyle & Travel

    August 26, 2019
CONSIDERED Magazine - A journal for sustainable living, travel, fashion, and design - mindful lifestyle | RG Daily Blog | Product Photography

Since moving to Europe, I’ve shifted my focus to living a more intentional, mindful, and sustainable lifestyle. While I’m sure there is still much ground for improvement on my end, I’m proud of the small changes I’ve made – changes that have allowed me to feel more connected to myself and the beautiful planet that has been my generous host for the past 26 years (in case anyone was wondering 😉 ).

However, I can’t claim to have made these changes on my own accord. Thankfully there have been a lot of (much needed) external influences which have drawn my attention to sustainability and mindful living. CONSIDERED Magazine has been one of these influences, so I thought I would share a little bit about this publication with you all today.

CONSIDERED is a bi-annual, independently published and printed magazine. The publication is based out of Manchester and was founded by Sarah Marie Vera in early 2019. Not only does the magazine focus on sustainability, but it is also produced locally in the UK and printed on unbleached paper using vegetable ink. Volume One of CONSIDERED is a thoughtfully distilled and beautifully presented collection of stories, interviews, and change-provoking ideas. Sustainability, slow living, and mindfulness are the red-threads that run through each article in the publication, highlighting and inspiring ways in which these concepts can easily fit into everyday life.

Volume Two of CONSIDERED is scheduled for release soon, but I would heartfully recommend getting to know the magazine from the very beginning. Right now, CONSIDERED Magazine can be purchased online as well as in-stores based on their current stocklists. You’ll find both options through the links below:
