Paris in Black & White ~ Summer Snapshots

    August 23, 2019
Paris in Black and White ~ Cafe de Flore / RG Daily Travel Blog

Paris is a place where the Europe of my daydreams is still alive.

The city itself, and the life that pulses through it, seems to be incapsulated in a time entirely of its own. You feel it beneath your feet on the bumpy cobbles and narrow sidewalks. You feel it on the broad boulevards, busy with taxis and mopeds. You see it between the whiplash curves of every rod-iron balcony. You see it in the light that bounces off the layered beaux-arts rooftops, their chimneypots like cigarettes standing on end. You hear it amongst the low buzz of chatter that clouds the sidewalk cafes, interrupted by the honk of a horn or the clank of two wineglasses. You hear it as the air moves through the parks and drifts over the Seine, carrying with it the sounds and energy of the people around.

In the last blogpost I shared about Pairs, I published 100 images. Today, I’ve decide to share only 5 images from our most recent trip. I feel like these 5 images capture the spirit of Paris that I’ve come to know and love. The Paris that I’ve always imagined, and the Paris that I’ve experienced first hand. I decided to show these images in black and white – it highlights the sense of timelessness Paris carries.

A Day Trip to Schwerin Castle

    August 21, 2019
Schwerin Castle ~ a Day Trip from Berlin Germany / RG Daily Travel Guide

If a day trip from Berlin is on your mind, consider paying a visit to the beautiful city of Schwerin. On our most recent drive to Hamburg, Sven and I took a short detour to explore this delightful north-western Germany city.

Schwerin is the state capital of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The city, and it’s iconic island-castle, is built between a cluster of beautiful lakes in the regions. I must say, the balance between the natural surroundings and the elaborate architecture of Schwerin Castle is absolutely stunning. Sven and I enjoyed strolling through the parks and green-spaces as much as we liked exploring the grand palace and the charming oldtown.

    ~

    About Schwerin Castle

The castle, as we see it today, was built during the 19th century and inspired by France’s famous Château de Chambord. However, the island has been inhabited for over a thousand years and has long served as grounds for a fortress. The oldest parts of the castle were built during the 16th century, giving this palace an interesting architectural mash-up of both Historism and Neorenaissance styling. The castle was home to the royal family of Mecklenburg-Schwerin until 1918 when the reign of the Granddukes ended. Since the reunification of Germany, Schwerin Castle has served as the seat of regional parliament, and the castle museum has been open to visitors since 1974.

If you’re interested in reading a bit more about the history of Schwerin Castle, check out this link – Schwerin Castle History

    ~

    Exploring Schwerin

When visiting Schwerin Castle, be sure to enjoy its stunning interior architecture, lake-front Orangery, and expansive ornamental gardens. I would also recommend taking a bit of time to explore the oldtown of Schwerin and the parks that surround the city. You can even rent a boat and spend the afternoon paddling around Schwerin Lake, taking in a view of the castle from the water. When it comes to food, there are lots of cafes and restaurants to choose from in Schwerin. Sven and I had breakfast at a cozy café near the main city square, but unfortunately I can’t recommend the coffee or croissants, so I won’t mention the name.

    ~

    Getting to Schwerin from Berlin

Travel between Berlin and Schwerin takes around 2 to 2.5 hours depending on how you get there. Sven and I went by car, but it’s also relatively affordable and fast to go there by Flixbus or DB train.

    August 15, 2019
Beauty Photography - Nø Make Up Cosmetics - Natural Skin Care, Packaging Design / RG Daily Blog

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realize just how important a good skin care routine is. Like many women, I’ve dealt with the full spectrum of issues – from acne, congested pores, dryness, sunspots, and now the gradual yet seemingly inevitable development of wrinkles. It’s taken me a bit of time to find a skin care routine that gives my face the right type of nourishment, but now I finally feel like I’m on the right track.

Recently, I began using Nø Cosmetics and the differences I’ve noticed in my skin have been pretty obvious. My skin has been dewier, I’ve been having fewer breakouts, and my redness and inflammation has calmed down dramatically. Simply put, my face looks and feels juicier, more moisturized, and glowy. All of ‘s products have been developed according to the CleanCareCosmetics philosophy. The brand’s range of skin care is based on a mixture of natural and clean ingredients that are cruelty-free, biodegradable, vegan, and free of mineral oils, parabens, and silicones.

One of Nø Cosmetic’s goals is to help women minimize the amount of time dedicated to skin care and beauty.

They’ve developed a straight-forward line of products that is suitable to a wide range of skin types, with options that target unique skin care needs. They’ve also selected natural ingredients that will help clear, soften, and revitalize the skin – allowing makeup to become less of a necessity. In other words, Nø Cosmetics is another nice options for all you cosmetic minimalists / lazy girls out there (like me).

Before we move on to talk about ingredients, let’s quickly talk about design.

Not only are Nø’s products nice to use, they’re also quite nice to look at and easy to interact with. I’m really into this simple, yet thoughtfully designed packaging. Nø has done an excellent job in weaving the ethos of minimalism all throughout their brand identity.

These are the products I’m currently using by Nø Cosmetics

3 in 1 Cleansing Oil Gelwith plankton extract, shea butter, orange oil, ginger oil, almond oil and avocado oil

A quick note about this collaboration – While I am officially writing this post with Nø Cosmetics, I would like to say that I was already happily using their products before our partnership began. I only choose to work with brands that are making products I can wholeheartedly recommend, especially when it comes to something so sensitive as skin care.

    Summer Picnic in Poznań Poland

    August 8, 2019
Summer Picnic in Poznań Poland - Travel Journal / RG Daily Blog

City life in Berlin has had me aching for little escapes to nature, and over this summer, Sven and I have been enjoying the liberty that comes with having a car. In fact, we’ve been squeezing in daytrips as often as possible – even just a small break from the city is so energizing to us both. For this travel journal, I’m sharing a few snapshots from our recent visit to Poznań Poland.

This past Saturday, we both woke up with the idea of driving to Poland for the day so we packed up a picnic, loaded ourselves into the VW, and headed for the border. When we got to Poznań, we decided to have our lunch in a cozy park just outside of the city-center. We found the perfect place near a small and peaceful pond that was surrounded by tall reeds and had a little sandy beach that was only big enough for one blanket. So that’s where we decided to settle in for a few hours, snacking in the sunshine and warding off the nearby family of ducks that were eager to get a sample of our baguette sandwiches.

I thought that the strong light from the mid-day sun made for some very nice high-contract photos. Here are a few more shots below.

    Kinfolk & Our Summer Kitchen

    July 18, 2019
White and Beige Danish Inspired Ikea Kitchen | Wooden Spoon Holder, Wire Egg Holder, Woud Candle Holder - RG Daily Blog, Interior Design

It’s summer time which means the veggies are ripe, all my favorites are in season, and it’s the best time of year to be in the kitchen.

For my birthday, my mother-in-law got me this wonderful cookbook by Kinfolk and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed diving into it’s pages – exploring new recipes from some of my favorite places around the world. This book is packed full of mouth-watering dishes that are all artistically photographed. It’s also a delight to read, and I’ve already gone through the pages cover to cover, leaving a trail of “must-try” bookmarks for our summer agenda. So, if you’re looking for a gift for someone who likes to cook, bake, read, eat, or simply look at beautiful images, I would highly recommend this cookbook. It’s also a great thing to gift yourself!

Below are a few more shots from our summer kitchen. You’ll see that we got a shipment of preserves from our jam-making friends in France. It makes me quite gleeful to see all of these copper-capped jars lined up on the windowsill just waiting to be enjoyed!

Mattise & Wheat in Our White & Beige Kitchen

    July 12, 2019
White and Beige Danish Inspired Kitchen | Matisse Artwork, Marble Kitchen Table, Hay Hee Chair, Menu POV, Wheat Arrangement - RG Daily Blog, Interior Design

Even though our kitchen walls and cabinets are pure white, the space still feels warm thanks to the addition of a few beige-tones.

After almost a year in our little Berlin Altbau, I finally got around to hanging a proper piece of artwork over our marble table. I really like the simplicity of this Henri Mattis, Essence of Line print. The bold contrast of the black looks fabulous on the antique white paper.

It’s interesting to see how the space has evolved when I look back on earlier blogposts from this room (like this one). Creating a sense of home in a space is truly a process, and I’ve been enjoying the journey.

Below are a few more stills I captured the other afternoon: featuring some juicy plums, a hand-picked wheatgrass arrangement, and my favorite stoneware piece from Alva Concept.

June in Paris and the Palais-Royal

    June 26, 2019
PARIS TRAVELS - Palais Royal | Vintage Summer Style - Rebecca Goddard

Palais-Royal is without a doubt one of the more iconic spots in Paris. During our visit earlier this month for my birthday, Sven and I stopped by the Palais-Royal to enjoy the beautiful Beaux-Arts architecture and stark installation of modernist columns.

I was actually very surprised that we had the courtyard mostly to ourselves, so we took advantage of the opportunity to snap a few photos. I’m sure it was so empty because of the blazing heat that afternoon! I like the way these photos turned out so much, I figured I would share a post just in time for National Sunglasses Day, which happens to be tomorrow.

Both Sven and I are wearing shades by my favorite sustainable eyewear brand, ECO by MODO.  For National Sunglasses Day, ECO and MODO are offering 20% with the code below.

Get 20% off ECO and MODO sunglasses with the code “MODOSUN20” from now until June 28th.

This post was written in collaboration with ECO Eyewear by MODO. All sunglasses were gifted.

A Visit to Le Tearoom – The Northern French Countryside

    June 25, 2019
French Country Side Travel Journal - Le Tearoom at St Rémy au Bois France / RG Daily Blog

A few kilometers inland from the English Channel near the seaside town of Le Touquet, you’ll find the wildly rustic countryside home of Nick and Judy Gifford. Sven and I first met this charming British pair last spring during our travels throughout France. After spending a few days in Paris for my birthday this June, we stopped by Nick and Judy’s for a few nights in the quite French village of St Rémy au Bois. It was a heartwarming visit and much-appreciated respite with all the nearness to nature us city dwellers need.

If you caught my post from our visit last year, or follow me on Instagram, you probably already know that Nick and Judy have a tea room where they serve fresh made scones, mouthwatering jam, the most decadent cream you’ve ever tasted, and of course proper English tea. The spot, which is aptly named “Le Tearoom”, is absolutely worth a visit should you ever find yourself near Le-Touquet-Paris-Plage. In fact, I would say that a visit to Le Tearoom is so enjoyable, it’s well worth the trip regardless if you’re already nearby.

The jams they serve are produced right onsite at Le Tearoom. The pair built a highly successful business, Tea Together Jams – now operated by their son in Le Touquet – and have been jarring preserves that are undeniable addictive. Their artisan organic jams and marmalades have found their way to the tables of 5-star hotels around the world such as Costes and the Ritz Paris.

Nick and Judy have recently begun offering a jam making experience via Airbnb which they’ve rightfully branded as “Jamming with the Best in France”. During the 3 hour experience, they’ll teach you all about jam making, from fruit prepping to jarring. And of course the package includes a delicious tea-time complete with scones, jam, and cream – all organic and locally produced.

Below are a few of the photos I snapped during our visit. I’ve included photos of our cozy bedroom, the courtyard garden, Le Tearoom (and the jam shop I designed and assembled during our first stay), and Nick and Judy’s sweet Jack Russell Terrier, Amy and Damson. Many of Nick’s original landscape paintings are also captured in these images. I think these stills are a very accurate portrayal of this beautiful and eclectic place (and personalities which occupy it) that Sven and I have grown so deeply fond of – hopefully we’ll be back again soon.

A Visit to Robynn Storgaard’s Charming CPH Ceramics Studio

    June 17, 2019
Robynn Storgaard - Danish Ceramics Studio Copenhagen - Minimalist Style / RG Daily Blog

Robynn Storgaard is a Copenhagen based maker and creative working in the world of ceramics. If you’ve spent any amount of time feeding your interior design needs on Instagram or Pinterest, you’ve likely come across her work. Her curiously delicate mugs and vases have been popping up on the tables and shelves of beautiful scandi inspired homes everywhere, and for obvious reasons too! When you visit Robynn’s profile on Instagram, the first thing she tells you about her craft is that it’s “For the Sake of Keeping” – a description that I so deeply appreciate, especially in a time when we all too often over populate our homes with mass produced items that are anything but “keepsake” worthy.

During my visit to Copenhagen for 3DaysofDesign, I stopped by Robynn’s studio to meet the artisan herself and explore her beautifully textural universe of ceramics. Robynn met me outside her working space which is nestled into a cozy side-street in Frederiksberg. She shares the studio with a few other local ceramic markers, each with a distinguishable style that somehow works harmoniously together.

The space is modest and calming, with a fresh but earthy aesthetic. Jungleous plants occupy the corners of the room. The mostly-white interior is warmed by small breaks of natural stone and large oak shelves that cover the walls. These shelves house everything from raw martials to air-dried pieces waiting to join the next kiln firing.

While Robynn bounced around the space, unloading the most recently fired kiln and organizing shipments for upcoming orders, I drifted through the room, examining everything with equal curiosity – from perfectly finished bowls and vases to odd boxes filled with experimental glaze samples. Afterwards, we sat down together over a freshly brewed French press and she told me more about her journey into the world of ceramics and how she gathers inspiration for her work.

Robynn has an interesting and diverse background which earns her many titles in addition to small business owner and artisan. She and her husband have three young children which gives her the wonderful title of mother. Originally from Canada and having lived in cites around the world such as Los Angeles, Osaka, and now Copenhagen, Robynn and I share the same title of North-American expat. Her professional relationship to the three dimensional world began through her career as an architectural designer, another inspiring title to add to her list.

While working in architecture, Robynn had a strong focus in material science and studied large scale building ceramics. I find it totally fascinating that she’s now honed her focused to creating pieces in the same medium but on such a personal and delicate scale. You can see how she brings this understanding and curiosity into her current work, and she explained to me how she’s always experimenting with new clay combinations. Robynn is constantly looking for ways to introduce new texture and structure into her clay by mixing in different materials such as tiny granulars of metal or small bits of fractured porcine. Some additions she produces herself, and some she upcycles from local fabricators.

This addition of texture gives her work a distinguishable feeling sculpted by its raw and beautiful simplicity. She explained to me that her simple aesthetic is built around her goal for timelessness. Previously, she explored decorative glaze techniques and created different marbled and splattered patterns, but after some consideration she’s made the conscious decision to avoid trendy ornamentation. The intrigue in her work is defined by it’s lack of complication, allowing the materials and simple silhouettes to speak for themselves.

All of her pieces are wheel-turned and after they have taken form, Robynn often adds an extra layer of interest to the design through a carved or fluted linearly pattern. These hand-applied details have have become iconic to her craft. Even the corduroy jumpsuit that she wears while working shares a similar texture, and I can see where some of her inspiration comes from. In fact, many of her designs have the same textural qualities found in simple textiles like her own working garb or raw linen. She also told me about how she often finds inspiration for her pieces in old artwork. Instead of examining still-life however, she likes to look in the background of portraiture – sourcing creativity from the less-in focus but equality as beautiful elements in the background.

In the coming months, Robynn plans to move her studio to a stand alone space, right in her back yard. With much enthusiasm, she told me about the airy outbuilding in her garden that she’s in the process of converting into her personal ceramics studio. She’s also currently building her online webshop where you’ll be able to directly purchase her beautiful pieces for your own personal collection. Be sure to keep up with Robynn on Instagram from the link below.

Dainty gold, elegant pearls, and warm tortoiseshell ~ these jewelry details are undeniable timeless.

These beautiful pearl studs have been in my jewelry box for years, and I doubt I will ever stop wearing them. Same goes for the cute faux tortoiseshell hoops and chunky antique gold chain bracelet. When selecting jewelry, try to find pieces that are, by themselves, utterly void of tread. Then by mixing the different classic styles together, you can create more playful and modern combinations.

Ethical & Eye-catching Home Textiles from Stitch by Stitch

    May 14, 2019
Sustainable Ethical and Scandinavian Bedding from Stitch by Stitch, Minimalist Natural Bedroom Interior Inspo / RG Daily Blog

I really appreciate it when a brand takes social and sustainable production just as serious as design, especially in a time when industrial textile manufacturing is at an all time high. Stitch by Stitch is one of those brands, and I’m very excited to tell you all more about their lovely products and ethically mindful mode of operation.

Every beautiful piece produced by Stitch by Stitch is not only made with the closest attention to craft, but also ethical and environmental responsibility. The brand is based out of the UK and working with textile artisans in both India and Nepal using age-old techniques that have been passed down over the decades. Almost all of their products are produced by hand using organic materials free of pesticides and chemical dyes. Although the Stitch by Stitch collection is designed in the UK, the brands aesthetic is guided by the traditional work of the skilled artisans they commission. Best of all, the brand works closely with their weavers, quilters, and farmers to ensure fair wage delivery.

I’m absolutely in love with the way these Stitch by Stitch pieces pair in our home. There’s something about the natural and raw textures that brings a beautiful warmth to our bedroom, and the neutral colorway looks stunning with some of our more contemporary accent pieces. I still can’t get over the quality and intricacy of this Chindi Quilt, and I’m sure the Desi Cushion will look just as eye-catching on our sofa or HAY Hee lounge chair in the living room.

Featured Items – Desi Natural Stripe Handwoven Wool Cushion / Raw Chindi Organic Kala Cotton Kantha Quilt

An Interview with Stitch by Stitch brand director, Karen Sear Shimali.

Q – What sparked the beginning of Stitch by Stitch?

“Graham Hollick had the idea for the brand back in around 2010 when he worked on a project with the Self Employed Women’s Association (or SEWA) in India. The organization promotes all home-based female workers in India to ensure they are supported in their self-employment, have access to bank accounts and finance, and supports them in their endeavor to find profitable work. Graham worked on a fashion project with embroiderers based in the remote Kutch region in north west India, which is an area famed for its long tradition of highly skilled textile artisans, including embroiderers, hand weavers, textile dyers, spinners and block printers. Graham was so inspired by the embroiderers, who live in humble conditions, yet produce such intricate and artistic work, and so impressed with the quality of their handiwork, that he went on to design a line of embroidered quilts, bed throws and cushions, working with the same group of highly skilled embroiderers. This collection, called Peacock Sportif, was Stitch by Stitch’s first collection.”

Q – Where did your journey start and what lead you to begin working with artisan weavers in India and Nepal? Where these relationship existing and thus the Stitch by Stitch brand was inspired, or did you have the concept for the products and then set out on a journey to find the right artisan makers to hire?

“After several subsequent visits to the region, and after partnering with an old friend who runs a textile production studio in Ahmedabad, Graham made contact with other textile artisans in Kutch, such as a group of hand weavers who work with purely rain-fed, indigenous kala cotton which is farmed, hand spun and naturally dyed, all within the local area. This group is supported by an NGO which is dedicated to the resurgence of this sustainable cotton crop, which can be grown in the arid environment without the need for additional irrigation, and without pesticides of fertilizers, thus making it organic, and an antidote to genetically modified cotton which is destroying the local environment, and contributing to extreme financial pressure on local farmers. The NGO supports the whole supply chain from the farmer right through to the weavers. We started buying cotton fabrics from them, and sent them to a master quilt maker we had met in Ahmedabad, to produce some modern patchwork quilts (our Chindi and Raw Chindi quilts). Although his usual patchwork designs are more traditional, he welcomed our simpler, more free patchwork designs!

We also met a master weaver in Kutch working with local wool – or ‘desi’ wool. He is famous throughout the area, and has won many awards for his weaving, but has also set up a wide co-operative of local weavers, all who weave from home in his village. His encouragement to stay in the village has meant that many men who would usually have left their families for low-paid work in the cities, now remain at home, and make a reasonable living from their weaving. We buy all our Desi wool directly from this co-operative.

Similarly, we made contact with an NGO in Nepal called SABAH, who works with weavers in the remote Himalayan villages, weaving thick wool radhi rugs from their own mountain-dwelling sheep. We loved the quality of their rugs, but the designs were often very patterned and sometimes dyed bright colors. We asked them to weave pared down designs and to leave the wool un-dyed. We’re only interested in working with small groups of artisans who produce exceptional work, and fair trade principles are at the heart of what we do.”

Q – The pieces which you offer have such a wonderfully natural and personalized aesthetic. How much of this aesthetic is guided by the capabilities of your talented weavers and quilters, and how much of it is driven by the imaginative designs coming from your studio in the UK?

“The existing textile skills of the area are really the starting point for our collections, and we try to showcase and pay homage to these talents in our pieces. However, of course being British, we are also highly influenced by a northern European design aesthetic, so we reinterpret the traditional skills in a modern way.”

Q – The name Stitch by Stitch is very representative in the style of the pieces you produce, especially the quilts. Can you tell me more about this unique quilting technique? Is it entirely done by hand by your makers in Gujarat?

“Yes, kantha stitching is entirely done by hand. It is an ancient technique developed simply to stitch several layers of fabric together, often old saris, to form a warm covering. It is very common in India and Bangladesh but it is difficult to find quilt makers working at the quality of our craftspeople. Our quilt makers use very small, neat, close stitches in rows of about 1-2cm apart. They also use very long threads so that there are no knots on the surface of the quilts. It takes one month to stitch one quilt.”

Q – The Stitch by Stich ethos is obviously deeply rooted in sustainability and ethical production. What steps do you take to maintain this admirable commitment to the environment and the skilled individuals who produce your products?

“It is a bit of a labor of love! Doing things well is not the easy route, but we have never been interested in mass-production or cutting corners with price or quality. By working with our NGOs in both India and Nepal, and also by having our partner in Ahmedabad, we can be sure that the textiles are being produced ethically and sustainably.”

Q – When most people think of India and Nepal, a cultural aesthetic bursting with rich colors typically comes to mind. Yet beautifully muted hues and earthy tones appear to be the core of your brand’s style. Tell more me about Stitch by Stich’s philosophy towards color and adding pigment to the natural fibers your products come from.

“Our neutral color palette mainly stems from our love of natural dyes and we try to use unbleached fibers when we want to use white. All the kala cotton used in our quilts is dyed using natural dyes. Our wools are either un-dyed, or we use a bit of indigo because we love it! We have tried to make a coherent collection where you can mix and match everything, but we are introducing a little bit of color too! We will soon introduce some dark red wool which is a traditional natural dye called Lac made from beetles. Our wool weaver is also an expert dyer, and he wants to reintroduce this old method of dyeing.”

Q – Where do you see the brand growing in the years to come?

“Working with hand made production is a slow process and growth is organic and gradual. Our quilts are really popular, and we aim to gradually increase the number of quilt makers we work with whilst still maintaining the top quality stitching, so that we can step up the production and introduce more designs. We have recently created two wool and alpaca blankets with a creative and experimental micro-mill in England, which is a real departure for us – this will be our first power loom product, made close to home. We will be able to weave the blankets in much larger quantities than we can with handwoven pieces, so we hope to be able to wholesale these or supply them for hotel contracts. The wonderful thing about being a small company is that we can be flexible, and experiment and try new things all the time, so we will probably just follow our instinct and see where it leads us!”

French Inspired Table ~ A Still Life

    May 10, 2019
French Inspired Vintage Still Life - Marble Table, Eucalyptus, Apple, Candle - Scandinavian Interior / RG Daily Blog

Today I want to share a few recent stills I created while exploring a bit of still life work. The inspiration behind these images comes from relaxed and uncontrived French country living – something I’m very excited to return to in a few weeks when Sven and I head back to Le Touquet to visit some friends.

Still life photography is a genre I’ve always had a curiosity for, and right now I’ve been working on developing my eye and shooting techniques. It’s really enjoyable to dedicate a bit of time to this type of work for the sheer purpose of exploration. There is so much similar content out there already, and sometimes I question myself – wondering if there is any purpose in “adding to the noise”. But I think exploration is critical for progress, so hopefully I’ll continue to have time to play around and hone in my skills.

Hope you all enjoy a nice weekend!

    Rebecca
