Vintage Marble Café Table

Vintage Marble Cafe Table and Radius Candle Holder by Woud - Scandinavian Interior Style, Minimalist Bedroom - RG Daily Blog

Another vintage marble café table has found its way into our home. This one is a bit smaller than the others we have which makes it the perfect auxiliary table for the bedroom. I love mixing these classic pieces with contemporary items like the candle holder by WOUD.

I wasn’t really looking to buy another marble table, but I happened upon this piece while browsing around a charity shop near our flat here in Berlin. I even managed to negotiate the price down to 20 euro, which gives me the feeling that my German is improving 😉

The base was actually painted fire-engine red when I bought it. Terrible, I know – but nothing a can of black spray-paint couldn’t fix. The pedestal is heavy cast icon and naturally black. It’s so unfortunate that someone painted it in the first place. To do this table justice, I really should have sanded off the many layers of paint to restore the natural cast iron. Of course it would have taken me hours to sand away all the paint, so I took the spray-painting shortcut.

This simple but clever candle holder by WOUD is also a new addition to our home. I really like the repeating circle elements and how this creates the foundation of both the form and function. I’m sure I’ll enjoy moving it around from room to room like I do with my other candle holders.

    My New Furniture Design Website

    May 7, 2019
    byrebeccagoddard.com / Furniture Design Website / Minimal

My professional website for furniture design just hit the web and I’m so excited to share it with you all!

Since the start of 2019, I’ve finally found myself in a place where I can focus on building my independent design studio for furniture. If you’ve followed my blog for a while now, then you probably already know that furniture design has been my main professional focus. Before moving to Germany with Sven, I worked as an in-house designer and product development engineer for an American based company. I decided to go independent however when we moved to Europe, and now I’m slowly but happily gowning my business.

Just the other week, I launched my website that I built on Squarespace using the Lange templet. I’m very happy with the end result, and it feels wonderful to have this project finished. From the link below, you can check out some of my past furniture design work. I will keep it updated as my work continues. Of course I keep all of the new ideas offline in the moment 😉

Check out my new site, ByRebeccaGoddard

Our Dreamy Copenhagen Wedding ~ An Elopement Story

    May 1, 2019
Our Dreamy Copenhagen Elopement ~ City Hall Wedding Photographer, Elva Ziemele / Lace Ivy and Oak Wedding Dress, Denmark / RG Daily Blog, Rebecca Goddard

Our Copenhagen wedding was such a dream. Just writing this post and reminiscing on mine and Sven’s beautiful elopement brings happy tears to my eyes — it’s by far the most personal post I’ve ever shared. I hope you enjoy our story and these photos — they are like a treasure to me.

On February 15th this year, Sven and I made the most special promise to each other. Because our family and friends are divided by an ocean, we decided to elope instead of having a more traditional wedding (we’re having celebrations with everyone in both Germany and the US next summer). Everything about our elopement day was intimate and beautiful. We even had perfect weather, which was gift considering that February in Copenhagen is notoriously grey and rainy. On the day before we married, I flew to Copenhagen after being in the US for three weeks. Sven met me there that evening after flying in from Belgium. The following morning, we woke up, had a relaxed breakfast, and then got married in Copenhagen’s beautiful city hall.

While I was getting ready in the morning, Sven went and picked out a bouquet for me. We had a sweet and memorable “first look” on the rooftop of our hotel with a view of city hall and Tivoli Gardens in the background. From there, we strolled to city hall for the ceremony. Even though I was totally jet lagged from my flight from the US, I had the best and happiest energy together with Sven. I had every emotion of happiness running through me the whole day, and the ceremony was so heartfelt. After we were married, we spent the afternoon exploring Copenhagen with our wonderful photographer, Elva Ziemele. Copenhagen is and will forever be one of my favorite cities. It was so special to have this day with Sven in such a meaningful place – I’m so thankful for the warm way the city embraced us.

Cozy Living Room with Natural Tones

    May 1, 2019
Bright and Cozy Designer Living Room - Scandinavian Home, Terracotta, Hay Hee Lounge / RG Daily Blog

To me, a home is an ever evolving environment. People change and grow and explore new things, so why should the spaces we exisit in be any different? In this post, I’m sharing a few of those changes – some small and some a bit more significant.

For starters, we changed our sofa. Yes – it’s very similar to the sofa we had before. But I’m still so happy we changed it out for the one we thought we ordered (we had a mix-up during the purchasing process and ended up with a totally different sofa). Last week, Otto stopped by and swapped out the sofa for the one we intended to purchase. As soon as I saw it I was absolutely thrilled. I’m sure it’s a piece that will live with us for many years. The lines are just so elegant, classy, but still contemporary – and you just can never go wrong with grey upholstery.

After the new sofa came, I rearranged a few of the smaller pieces such as the white Ginkgo and wire HEE lounge chairs. I’ve also shuffled around the cluster of little side tables. Perhaps I have an addiction to rearranging our furniture and small home accessories. It makes the space feel fresh and sparks new life and energy. I’ve also thrifted a few new ceramic pieces and painted a new piece for the large frame I found. I was so excited to pick up this big frame, but then I broke the glass immediately after getting it home – disappointing haha. My next change on the agenda is to find a replacement light for this space. I’m not very convinced by the retro glass one I hung a few months ago. Perhaps it would look better hung low over a table, but I think it looks a bit strange in this space – which means it has to go!

    Beige Details in Potsdam

Beige has been such a mood of mine lately so I thought I would share a few detail snapshots from a recent weekend visit we made to Potsdam.

The architect in that little city is absolutely stunning and it’s so nice to stroll around the Potsdam palace complex in the spring time weather. These are just a few of my favorites from our visit over the Easter weekend. I apologize for my lack of updates recently. I’ve been very busy working on a project for my furniture design business. I’ll share more about that in a post this coming week. We spent this last weekend in Bremen, so I’ll have a few snapshots to share from that trip as well. Hope you all have had a wonderful spring weekend!

Bedside Table Details & Fresh Spring Flowers

    April 15, 2019
Scandinavian Bedroom, Minimalist Bedside Table, Fresh Flowers, Menu Yeh Wall Table - RG Daily Blog Interior Style

The Yeh Wall Table by Menu is the perfect light and minimal bedside table. This piece has been a long-time favorite of mine because of its simplicity and two-legged design – a true testament of how clever design can help pare down materials without sacrificing functionality. The only difficulty with this table is that it can’t stand totally on it’s own. But it always works great on the wall next to the bed.

The lighting was so good the other day in our bedroom, I couldn’t help but to snap a few photos of the bedside table. Right now, it’s overflowing with these beautiful and fresh branches. I love their big clusters of tiny white blossoms. Full disclosure – my bedside table typically isn’t this tidy. Normally, it’s loaded up with half finished glasses of water and a few others items like a box where I stash my earplugs, eyeshade, hair ties, hand cream, and other little things. I thought about looking for a table that has a bit more storage, but I like how this piece forces me to keep my bedside relatively decluttered.

Fresh Cut Forsythia, Menu & HAY

    April 12, 2019
Minimalist Scandinavian Kitchen - Marble Table, HAY HEE Chair, Menu POV, Yellow Flowers, Forsythia - RG Daily Blog Interior Style

This fresh cut Forsythia is the ultimate punch of color in our kitchen right now. I just love the strong the contrast between the bright yellow blossoms and our monochromatic table setting.

Spring is beginning here in Berlin and Forsythia is blooming all over the city. A branch or two might have found their way into my bike basket the other afternoon when I was cycling home. We recently updated the dinning chairs in our living room eating area with a few antique Thonet chairs, so I moved the HEE Dinning chairs from HAY into the kitchen area and sold the other metal chairs. I’ve had my eye on these HEE chairs for quite some time now and was so happy to finally bring these two home! The design is particularly nice because it can be used both indoor and outdoor. If Sven and I move to a flat with a balcony or garden, these will be perfect for a stylish patio setting. These chairs are very contemporary, but I can’t get over how well they pair with our antique marble café table. For me, this combination of modern and classic is so much fun to weave together. I also finally got around to hanging the POV wall candle holder from Menu. I’ve had this piece for so long, but it’s still one of my favorite decorative elements. It’s just so simple yet clever.

Beautiful Line Art by Shatha Al Dafai

    April 4, 2019
Minimalist Scandinavian Living Room - Shatha Al Dafai - Minimal Line Art / RG Daily Blog

Today, I’m very excited to share some new interior photos featuring some really lovely artwork by Shatha Al Dafai.

Shatha is an artist from Oman. Her work blends togethers simplicity, playfulness, and a beautiful combination of fine and bold details. I first discovered Shatha’s art via Instagram, and I would highly recommend keeping up with her there. She’s constantly sharing inspiring messages on her feed and through her stories to uplift the everyday. You can also take a tour through her website to learn more about her art. Be sure to check out her shop where you can order prints and original paintings. Below is a short interview with Shatha so that you can get to know her a little better, learn more about her creative process, and understand what inspires her art work.

Q – Tell me more about what inspires you?
“My biggest inspiration is my feelings I try to listen closely to my heart and I draw them next. I get really inspired from people, music and books.”

Q – I’m curious to know which pieces are your favorite. Can you tell me about the art that makes you the most proud?
“The Genius of Pain series and my newest collection, The Blue Blood, are the closest to my heart. Both were inspired from personal experience, and I tried to translate how I feel about that into paper and draw them in one continuous line. My artwork Watch Over You means a lot to me as well. Being true to myself and translating that into my art is what really makes me proud.”

Q – Regarding the contentious line technique, is there a specific symbolic idea that connects your feelings to this harmonious form of drawing?
“It’s wonderful that you feel the harmonious effect of my art. I think it’s because I spent so much time practicing because it was hard to train my hand to work in sequence with my brain. My hand was too fast and my mind always went blank. It’s funny when I thought about it last year I felt that I’m always in a hurry in life and I always rush things. It’s great how art can teach you so much. So I decided to teach myself how to be in control, How to control my hand and let it draw what my mind and heart wanted.”

Q – How are you connected to your art on a daily basis?
“I draw a lot as well. It’s necessary for me to draw every day because every different movement of my hand can result in a new story of one line. It’s important for me that my art means something. I must say that I do pour my feelings through these lines. It’s a healing process.”

Artwork featured in this post in order of appearance: True Crew (original work), The Genius of Pain No 6 (print), and Superstitious (print).

This post was written in collaboration with Shatha Al Dafai. All paintings and prints were gifted.

    Afternoon Tea at the Table

    April 3, 2019

Even though our kitchen is tiny, I always get so much joy from this little table setting. We moved the HAY Hee Dinning Chairs into the kitchen area since I sold the other metal Thonet style chairs yesterday. It’s so nice to have these spaces feeling so cozy.

I’ve been suffering with some allergies lately and tea seems to be the best medication. I’m so thankful that everything is in bloom, but these allergies are really hitting me hard. Maybe there is something blooming here in Germany that doesn’t grow back in the US because I have been sneezing non-stop! More interior updates to come soon – we bought four new chairs over the weekend which are living in our dinning area with the larger marble table. I cant wait to share the updates!

Breakfast Table ~ Terracotta & Marble

    March 26, 2019
Breakfast Table, Scandinavian Home ~ Coffee, Terracotta & Marble | RG Daily Blog

A beautiful table setting is all about the little details. I find that the table quickly becomes welcoming and homey when items are thoughtfully mixed and matched. The elements that we have in our home didn’t come to us all at once – they are pieces that we’ve selectively collected over time with care. When all these little pieces come together on the table, a diverse but harmonious mix builds a setting with warmth and character. And usually, imbedded in each piece is a story about how it came to be a part of our home.

Sven and I were so lucky to find this little marble café table at my favorite neighborhood charity shop. Can you believe I brought it home for only 30 Euro?! I like to imagine that it had some type of fantastic life at a lively sidewalk café before moving into our flat. The little terracotta cup is one Sven and I collected while we were traveling in Morocco. I searched high and low for a few rustic and unique pieces while we were in Marrakech. When I saw this piece, I knew it was the one I was after. I love the juxtaposition of the somewhat crudely made cup with the luxe feeling from the marble. The hammered silver spoon is also an item Sven and I picked up during our travels. It’s part of a little collection of small servingware that we found in Saumur France. I like the small size, interesting shape and textural detail. Sven brought me home the little sage breakfast bowl from my favorite interior shop in Belgium, and the napkin is from a set my mom gave me during my last visit to the US.

The lighting in our kitchen was so good the other morning, I had to pause before breakfast to snap a few photos. Breakfast this day was a simple bowl of oats with coconut flakes, dried fruit, honey, and oak milk – and of course my beloved oat milk cappuccino.

Vintage Bedding & Menu Yeh Wall Table

    March 22, 2019
Calming Scandinavian Bedroom Details - Menu Table - Grey and White - RG Daily Blog

Over time, our home has begun to take on a character of its own. Much of that character comes from pieces I’ve found while hunting for very special second-hand treasures.

Just the other day for instance, I picked up these beautiful vintage pillow covers. After a good go-through the laundry, they are the perfect addition to our bedroom. I instantly feel in love with the simple and elegant structure of the crocheted lace panel. I think something special happens when these types of old-world pieces are mixed with more contemporary designs, such as our Yeh Wall Table by Menu. I really like how effortless the space begins to feel when old and new can so harmoniously coexist.

Hope you all have a great weekend and enjoy the rest of these bedroom snapshots.
