Dresden Germany: The Jewel of Saxony

    March 20, 2019
Dresden Germany Travel Guide - Day Trip from Berlin - European Architecture / RG Daily Blog
Bursting with beautiful baroque and rococo architecture, Dresden Germany is undoubtedly the jewel of Saxony.

As the capitol city of Saxony, Dresden has a lot of historic allure. The city is situated on the banks of the river Elbe and is relatively close to the border of Czech Republic. Dresden is only two hours by car from Berlin and one and a half hours from Prague. Naturally, this makes Dresden a great day trip destination! The oldtown has many grandiose buildings, but is easily walkable in a single afternoon. While you’re there, be sure to treat yourself to a delicious Stollen – the region is famous for this scrumptious cake.

Back in November, Sven was on business in Dresden so I tagged along to explore the city. I spent the afternoon strolling the beautiful streets and admiring the architectural details. Below are a few “postcards” I snapped during that visit. I’ve also shared a list of Dresdens must-see historic and architectural attractions. Click on the links below for Google map details.

Scandinavian Kitchen ~ Whimsical Spring Bouquet

    March 15, 2019
Whimsical Spring Bouquet, Scandinavian Interior Style, Scandi Kitchen Flowers - Berlin Apartment / RG Daily Blog
It’s amazing how much life a fresh bouquet of flowers can bring to a room.

I love the whimsical feeling of this bouquet that I arranged at a workshop hosted by Kopflegenden. The soft green from the eucalyptus mixed with the vibrant coral and pink blossoms is such an eye-catching combination. It reminds me a lot of my wedding bouquet 🙂

When it comes to bringing color and texture into a room, I like to do it in very sublet and flexible ways. Maybe that’s why I love styling with flowers? It’s perhaps the most non-committal way to try out a new hue. When you’re working with a white interior like our kitchen, it’s like having a blank canvas. The smallest amount of color or texture will dramatically stand out just like these flowers.

I actually shot these photos a few months ago and somehow forgot to share them here. I’ve posted several on my SoLebich account, and the people there really seem to love them. Why not share on the blog and Pinterest too?

    Cane Chair & Dried Eucalyptus

    March 4, 2019
Vintage Cane Chair and Dried Eucalyptus - Scandinavian Interior Design - Bedroom Details - RG Daily Blog
Cane detailing and wicker furniture has been making a strong comeback in recent times. While I’ve had my eye on more classic wicker pieces (hello Thonet 210 R) Sven and I aren’t quite ready to make that type of investment yet. However, I did happen upon this cute vintage (possibly antique) chair with cane work on the seat. Best of all, he was only 5 euro!

I like to have an interesting mix of old and new pieces in our flat. I feel like it makes the space more homey and warm – especially the wooden pieces. When I found this chair at the thrift furniture store in our neighborhood, it was a perfect fit! I think it pairs nicely with the small white wire table and adds some needed warmth to our fresh and cozy bedroom. In all fairness, I’m not so sure if the chair is entirely safe to sit on! You can see that parts of the wood are cracking, but I was happy to give him a new home. He’s the perfect “designated pillow holding chair” when we take the extra cushions off the bed at night

I feel really lucky that we have this amazing thrift furniture store so near to our flat. I’ve already found so many cool treasures there (like this gold night stand, round mirror, and marble table). It’s wonderful to be able to find interesting pieces that are also secondhand. Furniture is a special type of product because it gets to live a long life, maybe even in a few different homes. It’s not the type of product that quickly becomes the next layer of a land field, and I am really drawn to contributing and supporting that type of longevity. It’s one of the main reasons why I decided to focus on furniture professionally and while studying industrial design during university.

Below are a few more recent shots from our bedroom. The sun has been shining so much here in Berlin lately, and that makes me very happy. I always feel my absolute best when we have sunny days, especially after the grey and dark winter. It makes me very thankful that our little apartment gets a lot of light all throughout the day when it’s not overcast – the highlights and shadows create such a mood.

    Malmö Sweden: Travel Guide

    March 1, 2019
Malmö Sweden Mini Travel Guide -Daytrip from Copenhagen to Malmo - RG Daily Blog

Malmö is a great city to visit if you’re looking for the perfect Scandinavian daytrip. The city is the third largest in Sweden and has a rich history and interesting mix of culture, architecture, metropolitan flair, and access to nature.

During our last visit to Copenhagen, Sven and I decided to hop over to Sweden for the day to discover Malmö. It was a perfectly relaxing way to spend a Sunday afternoon. It was also nice to experience a different type of Scandinavian culture too! So, if a trip to Malmö is on your mind, I hope you will find these tips helpful. Each place I’ve mentioned is linked to google maps. Enjoy!

    – Malmö Sweden Mini Travel Guide –

    Getting to Malmö from Copenhagen

The journey between Malmö and Copenhagen is quite easy. We simply bought train tickets from the kiosk in the Copenhagen central station and were on our way a few moments later! It’s a short yet interesting train ride, approximately 30 minuets, and costs around 10 euro each way. If you’re under 26 years old and buy your tickets while in Denmark, you will get a slight discount too. The train crosses over the water between Denmark and Sweden by way of the famous Öresund Bridge. The bridge is 8 kilometers long, and the longest combined motorway for rail and auto in Europe. The train stations in both Malmö and Copenhagen are very central, so once you’ve arrived in either city transportation isn’t a problem.

Visit Stortorget – Malmö’s Oldtown Square

Stortorget is a beautiful city square positioned in the heart of the oldtown. There is plenty of interesting architecture to admire in this area, including Malmö’s Rådhus (townhall). In the center of the square is the famous equestrian statue of Karl X Gustav, the 17th century king of Sweden. There are also lots of lovely cafes, shops, and hotels in the area and plenty of benches in the square to relax.

    Discover Malmö’s Oldtown

Because of the city’s cozy size, it’s easy to see most of Malmö’s oldtown in one afternoon. Be sure to stroll through the Lejonet Passagen which is located just off the big square near Apoteket Lejonet. There are plenty of beautiful cafes and shops to discover as well. I was particularly drawn to the lovey façade of Konditori Katarina, and the Scandinavian floral displays at Blomster Pigan. While you’re exploring, don’t forget to pass by Sankt Petri Kyrka – an brick constructed 14th century gothic church.

    Stroll Malmö’s Canals

The city has many beautiful canals and bridges which can be found between the old and new town. Be sure you enjoy the peaceful waterside and interesting architectural mashup in the canal area. Bagers Plats Bridge and Fiskehamnsgatan waterside walkway are great places to take in the city landscape. We liked passing by the World Maritime University which features a bold mix of modern and traditional architecture. There are also quite a few interesting modern art sculptures along-side the canals. In the summer time, you can rent a boat from BookaBoat Malmö and explore the canals by water.

    Enjoy Kungsparken and Malmö Castle

Once you’re finished exploring the oldtown and canal area, take yourself on a leisurely walk through Kungsparken. Here, there is much to enjoy including the Casino Cosmopol, playgrounds, and the historic Malmöhus Slott (castle). Spend a little bit of time wandering through the Slottsträdgården that borders the moated castle. If you’re feeling hungry, stop by the charming Slottsträdgårdens Kafé – it’s located in the gardens too. It’s also worth visiting the Slottsmöllan (castle mill). During the summer time, you can sunbath near the water or take a gondola ride. Malmöhus Slott has a very interesting history surrounding the war time. The fortress contains a museum and is a great place to stop if you’re curious to learn more about the city’s relevance.

    Explore Ribersborgs Hundrastplats and Kallbadhus

The time we spent in this beautiful waterside park was my favorite part of our daytrip to Malmö. Ribersborgs Hundrastplats is a place where Swedes go with their families, friends, and four-legged friends to enjoy nature. The beautiful open park leads right up to the beach and seaside. We enjoyed walking through the grassy hills and sand dunes, taking in the fresh air and nature along the way. Once you’ve walked through the big park, head to Ribersborgs Kallbadhus. This charming bath house and sauna also has a wonderful café. I’ve written a full post about our experience at Ribersborgs Kallbadhus.

    Wednesday Updates & Espresso

    February 27, 2019
Coffee - Espresso - Cappuccino / Home Cafe, RG Daily Blog
It’s been a while since I’ve shared a true “update” post with you all, so I though I would do that today. Life has been really busy and exciting for us in recent days. Thankfully I have enough espresso to keep me going!

If you follow me on Instagram, you probably already know that Sven and I got married! We kept our elopement a secret until after the fact – only telling our closest family. The weeks before we said “I do”, I was away in the US spending some quality time with my family. I was also organizing our secret wedding from afar! The day after I flew back from the US, I left Berlin again to meet Sven in Copenhagen. I was totally jetlagged, but the pure excitement (mixed with a bit of espresso) was enough to keep me energized. So on the 15th of February, Sven and I were married! It was one of the best days of my life and I’m still high off the joy felt during those special hours.

Even though we weren’t originally planning to elope, I’m so happy we did. Before I even moved to Germany, Sven and I had talked about getting married of course. But the idea of organizing a wedding when your family and friends are divided by a massive ocean was really overwhelming to me. I wanted to be totally relaxed and at ease on that day, and it really could not have been more perfect and meaningful. Some point in the future, we are going to have a party to celebrate with our family and friends – we’re still not sure exactly when or where that will happen though. But I will tell you guys more about our Copenhagen wedding in a later post!

After our wedding weekend, Sven and I came back to Berlin together. Twelve hours after our plane touched down in Germany, I had a new visa in my passport too. I now have three years to live here. If I can prove that I’ve learned basic German after those three years, I’ll gain my permanent residence! Later that afternoon, our sofa was delivered and we were finally able to put our living room together and get the unpacked boxes out of the way. It was one of the most intense weeks of my life, considering all we got accomplished! Early this week, I re-enrolled in German classes and will continue learning this complicated, mildly intimidating, but interesting language.

I’ve also begun a few project with my freelance design work. Building a business since I’ve moved to Germany has been an on-going process, but I’ve never given up! Finally, things are starting to set into motion and I’ve been so inspired and encouraged by this. I’ll share more about this journey as things unfold. Sven is still working out of town most of the time, but thankfully he gets to come home on the weekends. He spends a lot of time between Bremen and Leuven Belgium. In the coming months however, his season of intensive traveling will come to an end. We might stay in Berlin, or we might move somewhere different. We don’t know yet! I’m leaving myself open to the adventure.

    Talk soon,
    Rebecca

Our Berlin Living Room – Bright & Scandinavian

    February 26, 2019
Grey Sofa, Minimalist Living Room, Scandinavian Home - Berlin Flat Rebecca Goddard - RG Daily Blog
Our sunny living room is quickly becoming my favorite place to spend my days here in Berlin. The space feels bright and energizing – perfect for home office.

Our flat is relatively small – 56 square meters to be exact. And before our sofa arrived, I didn’t even really use the living room. I spent most of my time working with my laptop in our cozy kitchen. Now that we have furniture, it feels like I’m living in a whole new and grandiose apartment! We have so much warm and energizing light in our apartment during the day. I really enjoy sitting at the marble café table and do my work in the dinning area of the room. Even though our home is small, I feel really happy about the ways we’ve been able to utilize the space. It’s a very uncomplicated and cozy living room.

As I told you guys in my last interior post, we ordered the wrong sofa on accident. We’ve ordered the replacement sofa already, but now that we’ve been living with this one for a few weeks, I think I might want to keep it! It’s a very difficult decision to make and I need to decide soon so we can cancle the order in time! I really like that the seat is one big cushion – it’s so good for napping.

    Malmö Sweden – Ribersborgs Kallbadhus

    February 22, 2019
Malmo Sweden Day Trip - Ribersborgs Kallbadhus Water / Travel Guide, RG Daily
If a trip to Malmö is on your mind, be sure to add Ribersborgs Kallbadhus to your list! It’s the perfect place to spend a Sunday afternoon and experience a part of Swedish lifestyle.

Sven and I took a Sunday daytrip to Malmö during our latest visit to Copenhagen. I couldn’t imagine a more perfect way to spend a low-key Sunday! After exploring the cozy center city, we strolled through a beautiful seaside park and made our way to the bathhouse. Built at the end of a long pier, Ribersborgs hovers over the sea and faces the neighboring Danes. We hadn’t prepared for an afternoon spent bouncing between crisp water and hot saunas, so we skipped the bathing experience all together. We did however enjoy the views and lunch at the café!

There was something so charming and old school about the place. The colors, symmetry, and overall mood reminded me of a Wes Anderson film. The walls, floors, and windows were all a bit askew with paint cracking and peelings on the edges. But the atmosphere was warm and relaxed. We felt like Ribersborgs is the type of place locals go to meet with friends or family. Sven said it remined him of the shabby but homey seaside cottages people rent for holidays in the north.

We decided to order the Swedish classics -shrimp and salmon sandwiches with a Kanelbullar (cinnamon bun) for dessert. After a relaxing lunch, we walked back along the beach and through the open park, Ribersborgs Hundrastplats. There were so many people outside enjoying the weather with their dogs and kids – such an idyllic way to spend a Sunday afternoon in Sweden.

Next time we plan a trip to Malmö, I’m making it a point to come back to Ribersborgs Kallbadhus to get the full experience. You can read about all their services from the link below and even pre-book a massage!

Plan your visit to Malmö’s Ribersborgs Kallbadhus

Grey Scandinavian Sofa & Fresh Ranunculus

    February 20, 2019
Minimalist Scandinavian Living Room, Berlin Apartment, Ranunculus Bouquet - RG Daily Blog
After over six months of living in our Berlin flat, Sven and I finally have a sofa! Consequently, we now also have a functioning living room. It feels so good to be settling into life in this funny little apartment.

Post Update: Now that our secret is out, (click here) the flowers featured in this post are from my wedding bouquet! If you haven’t got the news yet, Sven and I eloped last weekend, saying “I-Do” in Denmark. I was able to bring the bouquet back with me to Berlin on the airplane. Sven did such a wonderful job picking flowers for me – I wish I could keep them forever. I’ll tell you guys all about our Copenhagen elopement in a later post. <3

These are just a few photos I snapped today while making a little pause from work at lunchtime. Sorry for the grainy photo quality – the light wasn’t very good when I shot.
Sven bought me this beautiful bouquet last weekend, and I’m happy that a few of the flowers are still holding strong. He was sweet enough to find my favorite – ranunculus and eucalyptus. I think they look beautiful with the natural tones of our floor and neutral colors.
The candle is one that I actually made myself during a recent visit home to the US! My sweet sister-in-law took my mom and I to a wonderful candle making workshop! It was such an amazing way to spend the afternoon together. We got to select our own vessels, chose a scent, and mix and pour the candle entirely on our own!
As it turns out, we won’t be keeping the sofa however. There was a bit of a mix up when we ordered it and we ended up with an entirely different sofa than we expected (don’t ask). Thankfully, the team at Otto was kind enough to work with us to fix the issue. Our new sofa will be ready in a few weeks, so until then we can keep this one. I actually find it to be a quite attractive piece! I love the mid-grey color and spacious length. But our new sofa will be a bit less feminin in form. I’m sure I’ll share plenty of photos when it arrives. Link to sofa below!

PS – Sorry for the pause in posts lately. I’ve been very busy in recent time with travel. I was lucky enough to take three weeks off this winter and headed back to the US to see my family and friends. During that time, I was happy to be purely focused on the people around me. It was such a joy to spend time with my wonderful family that I’ve been missing dearly. In the coming weeks however, I’ll have a lot of news to share about projects and other exciting things on the horizon!

My Classic & Minimalistic Business Cards

    January 10, 2019
Classic & Minimalist Business Card Design - Black Line Drawing - Rebecca Goddard, RG Daily Blog

First impressions are everything and your business card is no exception. Designing an eye-catching business card doesn’t mean that you have to go overboard with the details however. Sometimes it’s the understated, yet thoughtful touches that will help you stand out and make your calling card more memorable. Below are a few tips for designing a thoughtful and minimal business card.

    – 5 Tips For Designing a Stellar Business Card –

    1. Less is Truly More

Don’t go crazy overboard with the details! The information should be clear and easy to distinguish at first glance. Eliminate the unnecessary extras (do you really need to state “email” before listing the email address?). No one likes to be overwhelmed with information, so only include what’s critical.

    2. Consider Readability

Plan on using tiny type on your business card? No problem – but be sure that it’s legible. If your text is tiny, you can still make it readable by using a strong contrasting color (such as black on white). You can also make it easier to read by choosing a serif typeface. Serifs were actually designed to help make letters and numbers easier to distinguish for the eye.

    3. Handle with Care

When designing a business card, it’s a good idea to think about how someone will interact with it in hand. When I pick up a business card, I typically hold it by a bottom corner. Leave a bottom corner free of information so that no important details get covered by a thumb while being held.

    4. Paper Quality is Everything

Even the most brilliantly designed business card will look unimpressive if printed on junky paper. The few extra pennies you spend on upgrading to a higher quality paper will go a long way. Your card will look and feel a lot more refined – it will also hold up better!

    5. Leave Room for… Whatever

Blank space on a business card isn’t a bad thing! Whoever you just handed your card to might want to jot a few notes down about the amazing conversation the two of you just had. Leave a little room for note-taking. It’s also a good idea to choose a matte paper that will be easy to write on.

My new business cards arrived and I’m pretty thrilled with the quality!

I wanted a card that would be clear, timeless, and reflect a little bit of my personality – gosh, am I boring! After a few hours of doodle sketching, I came up with this little design for the back. It’s just a simple reminder that we’re all the same. Like the contentious line drawing, everyone starts and ends somewhere. It’s what happens in the middle that makes things interesting, and it’s probably going to be a little bit messy. The same principal holds true for design I think.

I have edited the phone number on this card for privacy reasons of course. So, if you’re looking to get ahold of me via phone, you won’t have any luck by calling this number. But I’m happy to respond to your emails!

100 Photos From Paris That Will Have You Aching To Visit

    January 9, 2019
Paris France Travel Guide - River, Eiffel Tower, and Pont Alexandre III, European Architecture and Buildings / RG Daily Blog
This post is not a Paris Travel Guide. It will, however, having you itching to plan your next Parisian holiday!

A mini Parisian holiday seemed like the only proper way to punctuate the ten week journey Sven and I took throughout rural France last spring. Below you will find 100 photos from Pairs which I snap on my iPhone during our three day visit. A few weeks before we headed to Paris, I tragically broke my camera lens by dropping it on a bumpy cobblestone alley in Angers. We were traveling so much during that time and I didn’t have the opportunity (or money!) to replace the lens which is why all my photos from Paris (and later, Morocco) were taken on my iPhone. So for this post, I’ve decided to embrace the iPhone quality photos with some “vintage-postcard” stylized editing. It seemed fitting for Pairs.

When Sven and I arrived in Paris, we didn’t have much of an agenda. We simply took to the streets and found that there was something charming to discover in nearly every direction. As cliché as it might sound, Paris truly is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe – at least in my opinion. The city itself is massive, but somehow still feels cozy and personal.

I was completely blown away by the density of beautiful Beaux-Arts architecture. Unlike most European capital cities which were largely devastated by the war, Paris suffered through fewer bombings. Because of this, old-world charm still feels very much intact as you wander the streets. Summertime in Paris has a truly magical atmosphere. The parks and sidewalk cafes are full of Parisians and travelers alike enjoying the day. The city carries a warm and relaxed feeling that you just have to experience for yourself.

If you’re planning a trip to Paris, I would recommend staying at least five days. Sven and I managed to visit most of the city’s iconic landmarks during our three day visit. Our days were incredibly full of walking, and our feet were quite tired. As I said before, this post it not a travel guide. It doesn’t contain a wealth of tips on where to go, and what to do in Paris. It’s more of a photo reel to inspire you to go and see for yourself.

    I hope you enjoy!

Scandinavian Christmas: A Charming Little Tree

    December 20, 2018
Scandinavian Christmas Tree Decorations, Minimal Interior - RG Daily Blog
O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree, How Charming Are Your Scrawny Branches!

This Christmas Tree post is my fourth and final entry to my “Scandinavian Christmas” series. As soon as I saw our tree in the lot, I knew he was the one. Sure, he might be a little bit sparse in the branch department, but he has character! I’ve always preferred real trees over artificial trees, and the more natural looking the tree, the better. Having a rugged Christmas tree is the perfect way to bring elements from the outdoors into your home – especially during a season when we tend to spend so much of our time cooped up indoors.

I decided to keep the tree décor pretty minimal and used a few white, silver, and coper colored ornaments and a strand of LED lights. I also made a simple tree stand using a vase and towel (details below). All of the other decorative objects are pieces from our travels or elements that I thought made the space feel more wintery and cozy!

    * DIY Christmas Tree Stand *

This DIY Christmas Tree stand is the perfect solution for small trees! When I bought our tree home, I wasn’t quite sure how I was going to get it to stand up. After a little bit of toying around, I came up with a solution that works and looks great. All you need is a wide-mouthed vase or container and a hand towel. Simply fold the hand towel lengthwise a little bit smaller than the vase height, then wrap it around the base of the tree. Once the tree trunk is swaddled with the towel, slide it into the vase. Make sure it’s a tight fit! You might have to readjust the width of the folds in order to get the correct thickness. Once the tree is secure, carefully pour water into the vase until the towel is completely saturated. Re-fill the vase every few days to keep your tree hydrated throughout the holidays. It’s as simple as that! (scroll down for a detail shot)

Scandinavian Christmas: Eucalyptus Wreath & Cozy Bedroom Details

    December 18, 2018
Scandinavian Christmas Decor, Eucalyptus Wreath - RG Daily Blog
I certainly like to keep things simple when it comes to Christmas décor, and an understated eucalyptus wreath is all you need to add the perfect winterly touch to a room without going overboard.

For my third “Scandinavian Christmas” entry, I happy to share these cozy winter details from our bedroom. I suspended a simple eucalyptus wreath from the curtain rod and added a few candles to the dresser and window ledge. I also picked up a few willow branches for a vase – they have these little funny white puffs that remind me of snow.

Winters in Berlin are pretty harsh and dreary, so it’s important to me that our bedroom feel cozy and calming. As someone who draws a lot of energy from my surroundings, it makes sense that I’m so attracted to the calmness of Scandinavian interiors. I much prefer the subdued aesthetic of simple and natural holiday décor apposed to flashier options, and it makes me happy that this aesthetic is so easy and affordable to create! All you need is some fresh greenery, vases, candles, and cozy throw blankets!

Only one week left until Christmas!
