A week before moving to Germany I visited my ophthalmologist. As it turns out, my eye-sight has gone down hill fast, which meant it was time for me to pick out new glasses.

Finding the perfect glasses can be super tough. But it was easy for me to make my pick after discovering ECO by MODO. My frames are from their GLOMMA collection. As soon as I tried them on, I knew they were the glasses I wanted to wear everyday.
    – Three Reasons to Wear ECO Frames by MODO –

    1. Good Design

Everything about these glasses has been thoughtfully designed. Not only are MODO frames ultra stylish, they are also a dream to wear. There frames are incredibly lightweight and hardly noticeable on your face, even after a full day. Furthermore, ECO frames can be more than just glasses. The clip-on sunglasses are perhaps the most amazing design aspect of the frames I selected. These little sunglasses seamlessly align to the face of the frames and are connected by “invisible” magnets, making them the ultimate two-in-one eyewear options.

    2. Sustainable Materials

All of MODO’s ECO frames are produced with sustainable materials. Their Biobased frames (such as my GLOMMAs) are made from 63% plant-based materials like castor seeds, while their Recycled frames are produced out of 95% recycled materials.

    3. Environmental Responsibility

For every set of ECO frames sold, the company plants one tree through their ONE FRAME – ONE TREE program. Since 2009, ECO has planted over 1.5 million trees. How amazing is that!?

As someone who cares a lot about our planet, I get really excited when I discover a brand that also cares and makes it a focus of their business. We should all try to be a little bit more environmentally friendly, and I feel like ECO is doing a really nice job in this.

These photos were taken during our latest trip – a four day adventure through Belgium.

Even though we were really on-the-go and visited four cities during our short stay, I still managed to write a few postcards over some coffee! I’ll be sharing quite a few travel blogs in the upcoming weeks. If you haven’t read my lastest travel journal from our first day in Athens, you can check it out here. There are several more Greece travel posts to be written before I can move onto Belgium, so stay tuned! And for a “less refined” look into my everyday, be sure to follow me on Instagram and check out my story.

Today we woke up to a snow covered Hamburg. And snowy Hamburg is a dreamy Hamburg.

Sven and I went on a little stroll through the forest after breakfast and coffee. I love how clean snow makes the world look. Everything appears to be so bright, and the contrast between the white and deep evergreen is magical to me.

Now we’re off to the cinema and then to do sports.

P.S. – Sven doesn’t really like it when I take his photo – but he’s such a good model. I can’t help myself sometimes 😛

    Athens Greece Travel Journal

Scrolling through my photos from Athens Greece makes me wish I was back in the sunshine.

Athens in January is super nice – it was 17 degrees and sunny our entire stay. It’s not exactly warm enough for a swim in the Mediterranean (even though we still went for one), but it’s warm enough to be outside all day without having to bundle up too much. The nicest thing is that Athens Greece is far less crowded in January than it is in the summer months. We did most of the touristy things and didn’t have to spend a lot of time waiting in queues or pushing through crowds.

After enjoying a lazy breakfast, we took to the streets and made our way to the Acropolis. It’s amazing to walk around these places that are so old which are landmarks for so many historic events. The view of the valley is also really amazing to see from this elevation – I can understand why the ancient Greeks chose this spot.

From there, we spent the day strolling around Pláka – the oldest neighborhood surrounding northeastern side of the Acropolis. There are a lot of little shops to explore and we found the best snacks at Lulu’s Bakery and Deli – delicious feta pies baked with other fresh veggies. Yum!

The cozy streets of Pláka are perhaps my favorite part of Athens. I love seeing the little houses painted different colors and imagining how the courtyards look behind each little garden gate. Orange and lemon trees line the streets and there are lazy cats on every corner. I was sad to see how much graffiti had been sprayed around the city. I can imagine how lovely it would be if people were nicer and didn’t feel like they needed to “add their own touch” everywhere. Nevertheless, we enjoyed looking at the cute little clusters of homes terraced below the city’s most famous monument.

We also stopped for some Greek coffee in Pláka. It was something to experience, but it wasn’t for me. I ended up ordering my standard cappuccino a few sips in. Try everything once, right? 😛

    Hamburg Winter Street Style

We have “bundle-up” weather here in Hamburg.

While the temperatures aren’t painfully cold, it’s the wind that you have to look out for. It can be really mean when it rolls off the harbor. So I’m slowing learning that layers are the key to survival. I even wear a pair of knitted tights under my Levis!

The day after we arrived home from Greece, my massive shipment (with the rest of my wardrobe) arrived at Sven’s parents’ house. It’s so much fun to “rediscover” my clothes again! I’ve been living out of a suitcase since November which meant limited options. I haven’t unpacked everything yet, but every few days I go dig around in my boxes in the cellar and find something different to wear. It’s like shopping at home and everything is in my size!

As a blogger, it’s easy to feel compelled to spend money on new items to feature.
But clothing doesn’t have to be new to be excellent.

I’m wearing some of my favorite old Levis, a cozy wool coat I bought years ago, and a fuzzy pink scarf I got last year.

I would like to recommend these leather boots from Vagabond Shoemaker – I bought them right before we went to Greece and they are the best leather boots I’ve ever owned! They are comfy for walking hours in, sturdy, and mold to your feet perfectly. They are the absolute perfect every-day boot.

Three Things I’ve Learned Since Moving To A New Country

    January 12, 2018
moving to a new country germany hamburg rgdaily blog rebecca goddard

When Sven and I first decided that I would move back to Germany with him, most of my thoughts on the topic were super idealistic. But reality set in quickly after I began thinking about the details.

The process of deciding to quit my job, part with 80% of my belongings, say goodbye to my family and friends, and basically uproot my entire life was challenging by itself. Actually doing all of those things wasn’t easy either.

But with a lot of planning, embracing a jam-packed schedule, and coping with a little bit of stress, I managed to get myself to the other side of the ocean without having a nervous breakdown. Now that I’ve arrived, I’ve realized that getting to Germany was really only the first leg of the journey. Moving is one thing, but settling into a new country comes with its own set of challenges. In general, things have gone really well for us. But as with any major life event, there have been a few unforeseen woes amidst the exhilaration of change.

It’s been almost a month since I arrived on a one-way ticket. Things have been coming together quickly I feel. I’ve become a registered resident of Hamburg (a “Hamburger”) and have received my Meldebestätigung (a very important document you’ll need if you ever move to Germany ). I’ve also been assigned a tax identification number, registered for a bank account (with N26), setup a German phone number (and finally got it working!), signed up for German language classes (with the Deutsch Akademie), joined a sports club, and received the huge shipment of all my belongings (handled by UPakWeShip).

Considering that we had the Holiday Season and a trip to Greece sandwiched between my arrival and now, I think it has been a relatively smooth transition.

Yesterday, I picked up a bike – my new primary means of transportation. In two months from now, I’ll (hopefully) be granted my freelance visa. And half a year after intensive studying, I’ll (hopefully) be semi-fluent in German. At least these are the things that I expect will happen. But as I’ve discovered, there are bound to be several unexpected aspects. So today, I thought I would share a few that I’ve already encountered since my move.

Three Things I’ve Learned Since Moving To A New Country

When I first sat down to write this post, the original title was “Three Things I’ve Learned Since Moving To Germany“. After going through my list however, I feel like these things are applicable regardless of where you move. Especially if it’s a transoceanic move.

    – 1 –

    Daily tasks require more capacity.

When you move to a new country, everything is a little bit different. Things that would normally be second-nature require more of your mental capacity. As you adjust to new norms, daily tasks such as paying the cashier, checking the temperature outside, ordering a coffee, and even walking down the sideway (and remembering not to stand in the bike lane) demand a little bit more from your brain then normal. Everyday is a continuous learning experience and acclimating takes time.

Simple tasks can be super draining at first. You might need to adjust your self-expectation levels in the beginning until you get the hang of everyday stuff. You might reach your daily limit a lot early than you’re used to. This is ok and this is normal. Give yourself more time, try to get some extra rest, and don’t be too hard on yourself.

    – 2 –

Not speaking the language is very difficult.

Moving to a new country and not understanding the language is overwhelming, exhausting, and isolating. It’s easy to feel alone, even in a room full of people, when you can’t understand the conversation. It’s frustrating to not be able to express your needs. It’s embarrassing to always have to ask, “Is English ok?” when you’re out running errands and need some assistance. It’s fatiguing to be the only non-German speaker in a group of people who are all speaking English simply for your sake.

Existing in a world where everyone around you adjusts to make up for your inability is emotionally overwhelming. On one hand, you’re filled with feelings of appreciation and relief (I’m thankful everyday that Sven comes from a country where most of the people speak my native language). On the other hand, it’s hard to not feel bad about yourself. You feel needy, you feel incompetent, you feel like an outsider – no matter how nice and accommodating people are. It’s a hard situation to navigate through. But remember, you’re not the first person to be in this situation. With time and a lot of practice, words and understanding will come to you. (I remind myself this ten times a day!)

    – 3 –

A new environment can make you feel like a new person.

Or maybe you just discover more about who you really are when your environment changes. Everyday is a opportunity to learn something entirely new about yourself. You become more aware of your needs and your limits when everything you’ve grown accustom is suddenly different. Some discoveries can be surprisingly positive; others can be shockingly negative.

You learn about your ability to cope with stress when you step out of your comfort zone. You discover a new appreciation for things which you might have taken for granted when they are no longer present in your life. In the same way, you develop a value for the newly discovered aspects of life you weren’t aware of until now. It feels a little bit like growing up again. What’s even more exciting is that you have an opportunity to leave your negative attributes behind. You become a new person by default as a response to the change, and you have a chance to reimagine the type of person you want to become. Everyday there’s something new to discover, and you yourself are no exception.

As Sven and I navigate through this new season of life together, I hope to continue sharing some of the personal details. I myself have gained so much value and insight from other individuals who have shared their similar journeys of an international move on the internet. As a blogger, I also want to contribute my experience in hopes that I can pass on some helpful insight or tips on the matter.

    All the best,
    Rebecca

    A Moody Day in Berlin

After exploring Greece for the New Year, we flew to Berlin and spent a day wandering around the city.

It was a super moody day as you can see in the photos – typical January weather in Germany. We made the best of it in spite of the fact that, being Sunday, almost everything was closed (also typical in Germany). I was super cold after coming from 17 degree temperatures in Greece! But from what I saw during our short visit, Berlin is a beautiful city full of history and creativity. I’m looking forward to coming back when it’s a little bit warmer and the flowers are blooming. I could certainty imagine myself living in Berlin too, but we will just have to see where Sven’s job takes us.

A New Start: Life in Germany

Finally, I am writing the long overdue post about my arrival in Germany.

I’ve been here now for 10 days and I still can’t believe how quickly the time has flown by. Christmas is a wonderful/exhausting time of year to make an international move, especially to Germany. The holidays are a pretty big deal here, but I absolutely love it! Sven and his family wasted no time when it came to showing me the German Christmas culture – Christkindlmarkts and Glühwein are now my new favorite traditions 😉

I had originally planned to make a quick stop in Lisbon Portugal along my way to Germany because I had a 7 hour layover. However, I decided to wait-it-out in the airport after it took almost 3 hours to get through the customs control line. What a terrible experience! I guess I’ll save Lisbon for another time when I can actually make it a proper visit. So after waiting a long time in the airport, I finally boarded a plane to Hamburg and arrived super late on Tuesday evening. Sven was at the airport waiting for me along with his parents.

It took me a few days to get over the jetlag, and I was surprised to find out that we had a completely full itinerary for the days after my arrival. Sven and his mum planned all sorts of festive things for us like ventures through Hamburg’s Christmas Markets, brunching with old friends, a night at the theater to see a live acrobatics performance, a trip to the beautiful town of Lüneburg to visit more Christmas markets, evening glühwein and carol gatherings with more friends, a special Christmas Eve dinner at home, and a gathering of the whole family for the second Christmas holiday dinner. I’m sure I’ve left out a few things too!

Even though we were super busy, I still found time to miss my family and the holiday traditions I grew up with. It’s hard to be so far away from home during a time which is so focused on family. It’s also just a particularly weird time for Sven and I since we are sort of just floating around for the time being – I’ve never felt more uprooted in my life. It’s a very interesting thing to experience especially when you’ve grown accustom to a defined schedule, and made a home. But taking this move one day at a time is the only way to manage, and I feel confident that Sven and I will feel rooted in our daily lives whenever we get settled somewhere. Anyways…

With as wild of a schedule we’ve had, I was bound to become ill. So sadly I’ve spent the last few days with a cold and body aches (so has Sven). Thankfully we’re starting to feel better, and just in time too!

Because we are flying to Greece tomorrow for a nine day holiday!

We have a big group of friends (14 of us) going for the New Year Holiday! I’m just excited to be going somewhere a tad warmer 😉 I’ll try to share a few “postcard” posts while I’m there.

    10 days ’til takeoff!

Even though everything is in order, all the preparations have been made, and I’m 98% packed, I still haven’t fully wrapped my head around the fact that I’m leaving my home country indefinitely. We will be moving to Hamburg Germany – at least in the beginning. We’ll spend the holidays with Sven’s family and then stay there for a few weeks while we figure out our true plan. Sven has been applying for jobs all around Europe. So far it looks like Sweden, Switzerland, and Germany are all possibilities!

This season of life has certainly challenged me to let go of my “fear of the unknown”!

It can feel a little overwhelming to not fully know what our plans will be. It’s not always easy to say, “I don’t exactly know where we’ll be going,” when people ask for the details. But with uncertainty comes excitement. And I’m excited that I get to live my life with the person who makes me feel the most complete. I have a feeling that I’ll carry that sense of completion no matter where we end up – be it Hamburg or Tel Aviv 😉 nothing’s off-limits with Sven.

As of today however, we are moving to Hamburg Germany. I’ll be making a short stop in Lisbon Portugal along the way, and I’m excited to explore one more beautiful city. From there it’s all about family and the holidays! I can’t wait to visit a few Christmas markets after the jetlag has left me! 🙂

The photos above where taken during our summer visit to Hamburg.

I can’t wait to see how it looks with the beautiful Christmas lights!

    December’s Personal Updates

    December 7, 2017
    december personal updates rgdaily blog
After taking a long break from blogging, I finally feel ready to pick up where I left off and share some personal updates!

Since my last post, so many exciting changes have occurred – above are just a few of the highlights.

Back in November, Sven came down from Washington D.C. for a few weeks. It was the first time since June that we have been together for more than 3 days! Although we were really busy, we still took a little bit of time to enjoy a few final brunches together in the flat where we’ve lived. It’s always been a favorite of ours. But honestly, who doesn’t enjoy relaxing in their pjs and eating yummy things? 😛

    Our going away party.

My family and friends gathered together at my parents home for a going away party. I would be lying if I said I didn’t cry that night. It’s so hard to say goodbye to everyone, but I’m very thankful to have so much support and love from so many people! I’m also thankful that I got to hug everyone one last time since it will be a while before we’re together again.

    Work, the holidays, and packing.

Towards the end of November, I had my final week of work at Davis. It was hard to say goodbye to all of my co-workers and I’m going to miss all of the creative and hands-on design and engineering work I did while I was there! But I’m excited to see how my career develops once we move. Then we jumped back into celebration mode and gathered at my parents home again to enjoy the Thanksgiving Holiday and Sven’s brother’s birthday (he was in the country from Canada). Once the celebrations were over, it was time to begin packing up my flat and getting everything ready for the big move. I ended up selling/giving away a lot of my stuff. In fact, all of my belongings are sailing across the ocean now in a large parcel! They will arrive it Rotterdam a week after I arrive and then will be shipped to us in Germany. Both my mom and sister Emily came to help me move since Sven had already gone back to D.C. I couldn’t have done it without them!

    Shipping my belongings to Europe.

I’ve received a lot of personal messages about the logistics of moving to Europe, so in a later post, I’m going to share more information about my full moving experience. A company called UPakWeShip has sponsored my move. They have been amazingly helpful throughout the whole process. And trust me. Moving to the opposite side of the world can be very stressful, so it’s nice to feel like my belongings are in good hands. 🙂

Becoming an aunt – my most exciting update!

On November 28th, I became an aunt! My oldest sister Jessica gave birth to a healthy baby girl. I have to be honest. As soon as I held her I couldn’t hold back the tears. She is just so beautiful, perfect, and tiny. They named her Darcy Noelle, and I’m so proud to call her my niece! I’m also very excited for my sister and her husband. It’s an amazing thing to see their family grow, and I’m thankful that I was still in the US when she came. I’ll get to spend a little more time with her before I fly out on the 18th!

Right now, those are all the personal updates I have to share. It has been a super eventful month!

I’m going to be making the blog a much bigger focus in my life since it has been growing over the last year and half. Stay tuned for more posts and updates! Sven and I have plans to expand the travel portion of my blog and have even been planning a project together! But I wont ruin the surprise. 😉

    xoxo,
    Rebecca

November Updates: Exciting Things To Come

    November 9, 2017
november updates getting ready for change rgdaily blog
It has been a while since I’ve posted so I thought I would share some November updates. Boy – have I been busy!

There is so much commotion going on in my life right now, and it’s not going to get any calmer for a while.

But that’s ok. I’ve been working hard to embrace the ebb and flow of life during this busy season. Until we’ve officially made our move, I might not be sharing many post. Quite frankly, I just have too much going on right now.

It’s wild how quickly the days have been passing. I’m still working full time, and Sven has still been living in Washington D.C. On top of my 45 hour work weeks, I’ve been busy every evening getting prepared for the move. Because of how expensive international shipping is, Sven and I have decided to sell most of my stuff. I’ll only be shipping a relatively small amount of things. The rest is being sold, donated, or passed along to friends and family.

Saying goodbye to most of my belongings isn’t easy. But it’s a whole lot easier than saying goodbye to my family and friends! That is, hands-down, the most anxiety inducing thing I’m dealing with. Thankfully it’s not goodbye forever, and thanks to modern conveniences, it’s a lot easier to stay connected. Even from across the ocean.

I’m grateful to say that the feelings of stress I’ve experienced have been massively outweighed by the amount of love and support I’ve been receiving from the people near and dear to me. It’s stressful to move halfway around the world, but I feel (mostly) calm about it knowing that I’m not doing it alone. For starters, I have Sven by my side every step of the way. And also, my family and friends have been here for me too. <3

Tonight, Sven is heading my way on the train and will be in town for the next few weeks! After he arrives, we’ll be fitting in as much time as possible with the people we love. This weekend alone, we have dinner parties planned three nights in a row! How wonderful is that!? Next weekend, we’ll be gathering together with so many family and friends. My parents are hosting a big going away party for us – an “Auf Wiedersehen Rebecca and Sven” party. I’m looking forward to that gathering so much! THEN, the following week is the Thanksgiving Holiday. Sven’s brother is even coming to town to spend the holiday with us and my family.

After that, Sven will go back to D.C. to finish his work and I will prepare to move out of my flat. In December, I’ll be living with my parents for the first few weeks before I fly out to meet Sven in Germany (he’s flying a few days before me from D.C.). During those weeks at my parents, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that my older sister has her baby! She is due to have a sweet baby girl on December 16th and I just can’t wait to meet that little one! My flight is on the 18th. It could be a very close call if the baby decides to be late, and there’s a chance that I won’t get to meet her before I go if she is late! That would be so heart breaking to me. Hopefully she comes right on time. 🙂

Once we’re in Germany, it will be time to start preparing for the Christmas Holiday! I’m looking forward to visiting a few Christmas markets with Sven’s mother. I will also get to meet the many of his extended family… eek! So many things to look forward to! And lastly, we have some travel planned for the end of December. Can you guess where we’re going?

Sven and I will be bringing in the New Year in Greece!

We’ve booked a large home in Athens and will be going with a large group of Sven’s close friends. I certainty have a lot to be thankful for. Those are all the November updates I have for now!

    xoxo,
    Rebecca

    We’re Moving To Europe!

    October 24, 2017
moving to europe germany rgdaily blog life updates
This is a post that I’ve been wanting to share for quite some time! And now, it’s finally time to announce our big news – and no, we’re not having a baby. We heard that there were some speculations. 😉

In December, Sven and I will be moving to Europe!

We’ll be heading to Hamburg, Germany – the city where Sven grew up – just in time to celebrate the Holidays with his family. I know that he’s so excited to go home, and I’m excited that he is taking me with him!

It was a huge decision to make, and every day has been somewhat of an emotional roller coaster. Funny enough, I feel like I’m still standing in line waiting to get on the ride! There is still so much to do between now and December, and the anticipation has been building for a while now. I don’t think it will begin to feel completely real until things are set into motion though! For the past few weeks, I’ve been slowly inching my way forward, trying to take care of all the little things one has to take care of before moving halfway around the world. But in spite of all the stresses that come with such a wild event, I’ve never felt more sure of anything in my entire life because I didn’t make this decision alone. I made it with my best friend.

The most difficult part of this change, hands down, will be the distance between my family and friends. For the past few months, I’ve been spending every chance I get with the people I love – squeezing in as much time as possible before we have an ocean between us.

To be completely honest, I don’t think the reality of this change has completely set in. This morning, I woke up and went to work like I would any other day. After work, I came home and spent the evening in my flat like I would any other night. But in exactly eight weeks from this very moment, I’ll be starting an entirely new chapter in my life. Thankfully I have Sven as my co-author 🙂

Three Healthy and Satisfying Salad Recipes

    October 22, 2017

I’ve been eating a lot of salads lately for several reasons. Salads can be a beautiful combination of fruits, vegetables, and other ingredients that are healthy and easy to assemble for one person.

These are a few of the reasons why I love them so much. But salads can get super boring and unsatisfying really fast. Especially if you’re eating the same thing over and over again. That’s why it’s so important to be creative with your salad making game. I thought I would share a few of my favorite arugula based salad recipes. I‘ve been trying a range of combinations and they have all been so delicious!

When it comes to making a good salad, the first thing to remember is that we eat with our eyes too. Take an extra minute to make your salad look beautiful and appealing. The more colors you can have on a plate, the better. Or maybe you like eating you dinner from your favorite dish. I like eating my food from a white plate because I find that it makes the food look the most appealing. There is nothing to compete with the color, form, or texture of the food when you are eating from the most simplistic dishes.
