Washington DC: Coffee Date With My Love

If you’re on the hunt for the perfect spot for a D.C. patio coffee date and happen to be near Dupont Circle, be sure to check out Lil’B Coffee & Eatery.

This little café this reminded me of one Sven and I visited while we were in Copenhagen. It’s set on a broad street lined with clean, mostly white buildings. Little black bistro tables are scattered around the fence-enclosed patio, and there are a few plants growing near by. To me, there is something calming about such an uncomplicated aesthetic. It’s like a breath of fresh air for your eyes.

Our taste buds liked the coffee too! Sven and I are both (mostly) lactose free, so we opted for cappuccino made with almond milk – sehr gut!

    Washington DC: Le Diplomate Brunch

Brunch is perhaps my favorite meal of the day. And Sunday brunch is hands-down my favorite meal of the week. No matter if we’re brunching out or at home, Sven and I always take weekend brunch as a serious matter 😉

I spent the weekend with Sven again in DC. Every trip I’ve made so far to see him has felt like proper holidays even though they’ve all been short.

On Sunday morning, we walked through the Dupont Circle Farmers Market (which is held every Sunday) before heading to our favorite Washington DC brunch spot, Le Diplomate. The walk to the restaurant is nice and I enjoy strolling by the rows of pretty houses which line Q and R street. There’s something about the slightly unkept patio gardens and shady sidewalks that make these streets so charming.

Anyways, Le Diplomate might be one of DC’s finest brunch options (if you’re into French food). But really. Who isn’t into French food?

We decided to go for one of our tried and true favorites – Duck Sarladaises, along with something entirely new – Salmon Carpaccio. Both were delicious. However, Sven wanted me to tell you all that the Duck Sarladaises we had on this particular Sunday didn’t quite live up to his memory of the Sarladaises we had during our previous visit. I’m only including this details so I can tease him for his pedanticness later 😛

So if you’re ever in Washington DC, be sure to stop by Le Diplomate.

    Four Thoughts On Mindfulness

    October 11, 2017
four thoughts on mindfulness overcoming stress and rgdaily blog

Most of the time, the content I share on this blog doesn’t go far beyond what you can gain from face-value. But lately, I’ve been focusing a lot less on painting a pretty picture of my life. The season of life I’m in right now is full of change, and even though it’s all positive and exciting change, it’s still emotionally draining. In order to stay afloat, I’ve tried to shift my focus in ways that will help me better navigate the wild mix of events we have on our horizon.

Today, I wanted to share these four thoughts on mindfulness with you guys. Hopefully this little list of reminders will bring some calmness to your life if you’re feeling spread thin. These are just a few things I’ve tried to remember in times when I’m feeling overwhelmed, stressed, tired, or anxious.

    M I N D F U L N E S S

None of these statements are revolutionary by any means, and perhaps that’s what makes them so easy to forget.

    O N E

There’s nothing wrong with saying “no”.

Saying “no” sounds so simple; after all, it’s only two letters. But actually saying “no” can be quite difficult – especially if it’s to someone really important to you. If you’re feeling overloaded, don’t forget that it’s ok to dish out a few “no’s”. It won’t always be easy, and sure, there’s always going to be that one friend/family member who will try to guilt-trip you into changing your mind. Simply ask for a little extra understanding and hopefully the people in your life will be able to adjust their expectations.

    T W O

Accomplishing “everything” doesn’t always create a sense of accomplishment.

I think that it’s human nature to try to accomplish as much as we possibly can in a single day. And even if it’s possible to cross off every nagging item on your “to-do list” in the span of 12 hours, the feeling of sheer exhaustion you might experience after all is finished could completely overshadow any sense of accomplishment you might experience. The reality is that there will always be more “to-do’s” to add to the list. Don’t forget to relax a little while enjoying what you’ve already accomplished before moving on to the next thing.

    T H R E E

Expressing how you feel does not make you weak or demanding.

Of all the items on this list, this might be the hardest one to remember. So I’ll say it again. Expressing how you feel does not make you weak or demanding. I think we live in a time where we are expected to be easy-going and breezy about everything, including our feelings. But the truth is that everyone has feelings that need to be vocalized and understood. Another truth is that we often make mistakes without even realizing it. I know this is true because I myself do it all the time. Sometimes, the unintentional mistakes we make lead to the hurt feelings of the people around us. And sometimes, we’re on the other side of that equation. Misunderstandings can create a lot of relational stress, but open communication is the easiest way to prevent this from happening. So go ahead. Speak about your feelings. They don’t make you weak or demanding – they make you relatable. They make you human.

    F O U R

It’s ok to have nothing to show.

We live in a time when it seems as if every single day should be orchestrated as a picture-perfect event. Don’t believe me? Hop onto Instagram and you’ll quickly see what I’m taking about. I of all people would know considering my involvement in the perfectly curated world of social media and “lifestyle blogging”. But some days, I have absolutely nothing to show (at least with the rest of the world) and I’m completely ok with that. In fact, I’ve learned to embrace those day. There is absolutely nothing wrong with spending an entire Saturday stretched out on the sofa in your most unbecoming sweats – dirty dishes in the sink, laundry in the hallway still waiting to be washed, Netflix streaming in the background, and absolutely no one to impress.

Avocado Toast, Fig Salad, And Girl Time

Avocado toast has been seriously popular these day for obvious reasons. It’s easy to make, healthy, and oh-so-delicious!

I’ve been trying to eat a super plant based diet lately. So when my mom and sisters came for a visit today, I made us the biggest, most delicious fig salads and my favorite avocado toast!

    Sun Gold Avocado Toast Recipe

    Toasted Organic 7-Grain Bread
    Sliced Sun Gold Cherry Tomatoes
    Sliced Hass Avocados
    Raw Sunflower Seeds

I love topping my avocado toast with these sweet little Sun Gold cherry tomatoes. They are so juicy, a little bit tangy, and add such a nice color to the table. I also like the added crunch from the raw sunflower seeds. These small seeds are very high in vitamin E and rich in antioxidants too!

After lunch, we had some homemade sorbet. It was a recipe that I whipped together last night and was so easy to make. I still have a little bit left over so I will try to snap some photos so that I can share the full details in a later post. After food, we walked around downtown and enjoyed the fresh autumn air for a few hours before going for dinner.

I’ve been so happy to spend time with my family lately. Having the girls here (minus my oldest sister, Jessica) makes my heart feel so full! With life as busy as it is and a quite a few miles between us, it’s not always easy to be together. But I’m grateful that we make time for each other to relax and laugh together.

Now I’m off for bed. A new work week starts bight an early tomorrow!

Denim jacket weather is here to stay! At least for the next month or so. After that, we’ll be onto the next best thing – cozy winter coats!

Here’s an outfit I wore during my last trip to D.C. I paired this casual denim jacket with a cute beige lace mini dress, bright white sneakers, and my le boy.

Photo credits go to Sven… He takes 95% of my outfit photos. Talk about a patient and kind boyfriend! I couldn’t be more lucky to have a man by my side who supports my hobbies and is always so willing to help me in all the little ways 🙂

The first week of fall is officially upon us so to mark the occasion, Sven and I decided to make an impromptu trip to the Blue Ridge Mountains.

The blue ridge mountains will always have a special place in my heart. After all, they were my home for more than three years while I was in college. It felt like I was long over due for a visit. Sven has never seen the fall colors on the Blue Ridge Parkways so I was excited to share this special place with him. I was hopeful we would see some vibrate fall foliage in transition too.

Sadly, the colors weren’t as vibrant as I had hoped. Regardless..
die Berge und Wasser sind wunderschön
(wunderschön – my current favorite German word 😛 )

We pack our standard picnic – fresh fruit and avocado sandwiches on fresh-baked baguettes. One with brie and apples, the other with chèvre and tomatoes. Sehr gut!

We also had a four-legged friend along for the adventure! Ashley was out of town for the weekend, so Sven and I looked after her sweet pup, Dallas. It’s always nice to have a trial run with a dog. We would love to have a dog of our own, but we don’t have the time for one right now with work and travel!

We spent a few hours walking around Julian Price Lake. I think this is one of the most peaceful spots in the Blue Ridge Mountains. I wanted to take a canoe onto the water, but Dallas didn’t seem up for that adventure. We walked the full loop instead and found a little spot with a view of the water where we snacked away our lunch.

At Moses Cone Manor, I finally found some fall colors in the trees. You can see how happy that made me. What you can’t see, however, is how bad my allergies were by this point. Honestly, I have no idea how I survived three years of the hay fever!

Right now, the air is becoming crisp and I’m starting to feel the promise of autumn. This is a very exciting feeling to me because it means that it’s finally time to get ready for fall fashion!

While it’s not full-blown “jacket season” yet, the coolness makes it perfect for darker color combinations and welcomes an increase in layers. While I love my summer wardrobe, I’m ready for fall fashion!

I paired the look above with a denim jacket later in the evening after the warmth of the afternoon sun wore off. This outfit was great for a weekend with the girls – a little flirty but still soft and casual.

The other lovely ladies are my sisters (my youngest sister and my sister-in-law). They were in town for the weekend, so we spent some time strolling around the Greensboro Folk Festival which was happening right outside my flat.

Sisters Weekend: Snacking With The Girls

This sisters weekend has been one of the sweetest weekends I’ve had in a long time. It was a little bitter sweet now that everyone is gone.

The Emily and Maedchen came in town on Friday night, but we were missing Jessica! Sadly she couldn’t make it because she has been sick and was under close watch in the hospital. I haven’t written about this yet, but I’m so excited to say that I’m going to be an aunt! Jessica and Will are due in December and I’m really thrilled for them. It will be here before we know it! She came down with a fever so her doctor thought it would be good for her to stay in the hospital so that they could monitor her and the baby. I’m so happy to say they she was able to go home together 🙂

Anyways, us three girls had such a nice time snacking away for brunch and lunch on Saturday. In the morning, we had a nice brunch of coffee, fresh figs, juicy strawberries, pastries, and mango smoothie bowls with coconut and chia seeds. Yum! For lunch, we ate yummy Israeli salad with a side of bread, cheese, avocado, and delicious French red wine. So good!

I really want to plan another sisters weekend soon. Family is so important to me and the time we get to spend together is always so much fun. For anyone who has sisters, you know how there is no one else like a sister. We spent so much time laugh and talking and my heart just feels so full! I really hate that Jessica and baby couldn’t make it!

    XOXO

    Copenhagen Denmark: Another Dreamy City

    September 1, 2017
Of all the cities in the world that I’ve visited so far, Copenhagen Denmark undoubtedly makes my top five favorites list.

Everything about the place is dreamy. I love the clean and classic design and architecture you see everywhere – the Danes obviously have a knack for that. Here are some photos from our trip in June. I’ll share more updates later – I’m at the airport right now and my flight to D.C. is almost ready to board. But I’m trying to be better about blogging, so something is better than nothing. Isn’t that always the struggle?

    To be continued…

Washington DC: A Sunday in the City

    A Day in DC

A weekend in Washington DC wouldn’t be complete without a brunch outing to perhaps the city’s best French restaurant, Le Diplomate.

When I went to visit Sven in Washington DC, this is the place he decided to take me for our special brunch last week. My god, was it something worth writing about. We decided to pick a few things (sweet and savory) to share. T hink DUCK SARLADAISES – duck confit, egg sunny side up, roasted potatoes / FRENCH TOASTrose-strawberries, Chantilly cream, lime – is your mouth watering yet? The interior was also beautifully done and oh-so-French-feeling. We were seated in the pretty atrium which was decorated with plants and a colorful mix of tile. So, if you’re ever in DC, don’t skip this place. It was honestly the best French toast I’ve had (update to follow once Sven takes me to France 😛 )

After brunching the morning away, we took a trip to the DC Zoo. The best thing about DC (besides brunch at Le Diplomate) is that all of the exhibitions are free to the public. Museums, parks, monuments, zoos, etc. – all free to enter. We like walking around seeing all the cute animals. I was most excited to see the red panda, but sadly they were having an afternoon nap when we stopped by. To be totally honest, zoos make me a little sad because I’m not sure if all the animals are happy to be there. But I’m still grateful that we could see some of those cute creatures (and also the not-so-cute ones too, like snakes).

On Friday morning, I’m flying back to DC to visit Sven again. We have a long holiday together finally and we plan to see some art museums!

A year with my best friend

    August 22, 2017
love rebecca sven one year rgdaily blog
366 days ago, I met my best friend.

While I can’t claim to be any type of relationship expert, I can say that our relationship is good for reasons which extend beyond general compatibility and attraction. And while we don’t do all these things perfectly 100% of the time, I wanted to share a few aspects that I believe contribute to the quality of our relationship.

     – we encourage each other –
    – we share our fears with each other –
    – we’re critical of each other –
    – we don’t hold back our corks –
    – we share our dreams for the future with each other –
    – we know that neither of us are mind-readers –
    – we respect each others privacy –
    – we’re mindful of each others short comings –
    – we know that things will never be perfect –

Again, I can’t claim that we’re perfect in all these areas all the time. But generally speaking, these are true and consistent aspects of our relationship that I believe have helped us grown stronger and closer together. Perhaps there’s something on this list that will inspire you in your relationships – be it your friends or your partner. What are aspects that make your relationships strong?

A few hours east of D.C., you’ll find the charming ocean-side town of Lewes Delaware.

On Saturday morning, Sven and I made an early start for the beach. We baked fresh bread before getting on the road and made a stop at Trader Joes to load up my straw tote and Sven’s backpack with all types of fresh things for snacking. After driving through fields of corn and soybeans for quite some time, we finally arrived at the sandy shoreline of Lewes Delaware.

Even though we only visited for the day, going to Lewes felt like real holidays.

It was so nice to spread our blanket out in the sand and snack away on the yummy picnic we had packed. Avocado, tomato, cucumber, and goat cheese tasted so good together on the whole-wheat baguette Sven made! Honestly, I’m spoiled by this man and his baking skills 😛

We napped in the sunshine and cooled of every now and again in the water. The sun was bright all day long and the breeze wasn’t much to speak of, but the ocean was crisp enough to make up for the lack of wind and shade.

After roasting in the sun for a few hours, we packed up camp and headed into the town center.

Lewes is a small town – far more picturesque feeling than most American beach towns. It’s known for being “the first town in the first” and still has a lot of it’s old-town charm which makes it even a bit more special. Being so tiny, it’s easy to explore all of Lewes in a single afternoon. There is a nice park that strolls along side the marina, and the main shopping area has a several cute stores and restaurants. Before hitting the road back to D.C., Sven and I snacked some pizza at a little café/wine bar called Half Full – very tasty!
