    Hello!

Last weekend, we went to this funny vineyard, Divine Llama. There, you can relax while drinking wine with llamas  – how funny is that?! It was so nice to be in the sun enjoying the warm weather – it’s finally beginning to feel like summer here!

This weekend, we’re going somewhere even warmer, but Sven doesn’t know where we are going because I’ve planned this trip as a surprise! I’ve been so excited to go have a little holiday together and even more excited over the fact that I was able to keep our destination a secret all the way to the end (Sven was surprised too I think 😛 ) I’ll tell him where we’re going tomorrow over coffee 🙂

We’re getting up really early tomorrow and I really should be in bed, but I have hiccups that wont go away and poor Sven is trying to sleep – it’s so annoying, honestly.

    Talk soon!

    Riviera Maya Travel Journal

    – Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Akumal Bay –

    Hello!

Finally, I’ve decided to write a real travel journal for our trip to Mexico. I’m going to share details about our whole experience – where we stayed, where we ate, the adventures we had, everything! Since we wanted to have a more “authentic” travel experience, we didn’t go for the whole resort style holiday. Instead, we tried to experience things rooted more closely to the local culture.

    perks of non-resort travel

    You save money!

Hell yes – who doesn’t like saving money? We stayed in an amazing Airbnb (more details to follow) which ran us $80.00 a night. Did I mention that we had our own private rooftop terrace complete with a pool? The terrace alone was worth $80 a night to me – I would have slept out there in a hammock! But we had a nice bed too so I didn’t 😛 . You’ll also save money on food – we had a lovely kitchen and made good use of it! Sven went to the local market and came back with all types of nice things for brunching and snacking. We had brunch on the terrace every morning and packed sandwiches and smoothies for afternoon snacks.

    You’re free to roam!

Since you didn’t spend all your money on a fancy resort, you have a lot of extra money to spend on other things (such as food and adventures). Also, you won’t feel compelled to “get your moneys worth” and spend all your time visiting a different country on a resort compound that’s relatively similar to the country you just came from (let’s be real, that trip you took to Cancun in college was a far cry from experiencing real Mayan culture). Get out there – explore, wander, get lost… you might find yourself having the best adventure of your life.

    You’ll try new things!

Ditch the bubble of resort holidays and break out of your comfort zone a little – We tried new foods, gave the Spanish language an honest go, commuted with the locals, encountered a few native animals, and had a blast the whole time.

    You’ll learn a lot!

Whether if it’s about the country you’re visiting, the person you’re traveling with, or even yourself – you’re bound to learn a thing or two along the way. Sven and I learned a lot about each other on this trip. For example, we started the beginning leg of this trip in Cancun because my friend and I were running in the Cancun Half Marathon. Long story short, we missed the package pickup, got stuck in traffic because the road back to our hotel was closed for the race, us girls had to pee really bad so we got out of the taxi in traffic to find a bathroom – by the time we got back we couldn’t find our taxi so we ran a mile down the road on the median trying to find it. We finally found it and thankfully the guys we still inside! A hour later, we made it back to the hotel and got changed into our race clothes, and then had to take a cab back to the start-line. Of course, we were so late that it wasn’t even there any more – she and I still ran even though we never had official times and were some of the “last” half marathoners to finish. After the race, traffic was (again) absolute madness, and we couldn’t get back to our hotel because the road was still closed. So we made the best of it and stayed out late at a restaurant even though we had just run 13 miles (in the rain partly) and were smelly and completely nasty. By the time we made it back to our hotel, I was so tired I couldn’t believe it. When I laid down in bed after taking (the most glorious) shower, Sven asked me how I was feeling and all I could come up with was, “I feel flat.” Keep in mind, all of this happened within the first 36 hours of our arrival! But we made the best of it and we didn’t let the stressfulness of the situation ruin our experience. It was interesting for me to learn how Sven navigates through stressful situations and I’m sure he learned a few things about me too 😉

After the race – the stressful prologue to our Mayan holiday. Now off to Playa del Carmen!

    Playa del Carmen

    – Day 1 –
    Parque Leona Vicario

As soon as we arrived in Playa, we made a b-line to the closest open-air food market near the bus stop, Parque Leona Vicario – a little park right behind the vibrant blue wall. There you’ll find many options for authentic Mexican street food. We went for the vegetarian burritos which were super tasty and cost maybe 1 US dollar. While I was eating mine, half of the avocado fell out the back and onto the ground… talk about heart breaking.

    The Airbnb

After snacking, we walked to our Airbnb and got checked in. On the way there, we stopped at a different markey and picked up some cookies and coconut water which we enjoyed while taking an afternoon dip in the rooftop pool. If you every find yourself in Playa del Carmen, I would truly recommend booking with Piero – our Airbnb host. Everything was so nice and I feel like we had the best of both world – luxury lodging at an unbeatable price. Obviously there were cheaper options, but I think we found a great middle ground between “resort holiday” and “local digs” 🙂

    Trattoria Del Centro

After getting a bit of afternoon sun, we got ready for dinner and walked the streets of Playa for a while before deciding on a restaurant for dinner, Trattoria Del Centro. Sven and I are mostly vegetarians, but we’ll try meat every once in a while like we did this night. We tried a dish with boar hoof and a dish with octopus! I didn’t like either of them but I think that’s because I don’t really like meat. The wine was delicious and I enjoyed the salad and bread we had – I liked the atmosphere of the restaurant a lot, so if you like meat, check this place out 🙂

After that, we made our way home and hit the hay!

    Playa del Carmen

    – Day 2 –
    Brunching

We started the morning with breakfast on the terrace – Sven got up early and went to the market to pick up a few things (more market details to follow) – I slept in.

    Searching for Beaches

After a relaxing morning, we packed a few snacks and then made our way to the beach. We were looking for a spot that was a little less packed, so we made our way north to Coco Beach which is past most of the resort beaches (because we hate being around other people 😉 )

    Coco Beach

If you like to avoid crowds and want a more relaxing, quiet beach experience, head north of the main beach access to Coco beach. We got there by trespassing (I think) through The Reef at Coco Beach‘s access point – but you can also get there by walking north on the beach. We stayed here until the sun started to set behind us and then packed our things and walked back along the beach. Sven was on a mission to go back to the market – he really does love food!

    Mega Comercial Mexicana

If you are ever in Playa and are looking for a market place that has everything, please go to the Mega Comercial Mexicana. There you will find so many great options for food, wine, sunscreen and anything else you might need without having to pay the inflated prices which you’ll find on 5th Avenue. I was obsessed with the price of Nutella – less than $2.50 in USD! Yes please – I even bought a jar to bring home. From there, we went home and enjoed some wine on the terrace and then got ready for dinner

    La Cueva del Chango

This little restaurant, La Cueva del Chango (which means “monkey’s cave”) was so delicious and very charming. I would absolutely recommend this place as one of my top picks for are quiet, romantic dinner in Playa if you’re looking for something with “jungle vibes”!

    To be continued….

    Hello Lovelies!

How pretty is this large textured vase? I ordered it from H&M a week ago – I’ve been pretty into some of the accessories they’ve been pulling out lately in their home collection (and even more into the prices!)

Check out their latest collection here!

I really love changing up the details in my home and do it fairly often, but this can get spendy if I’m not careful! One of my favorite ways to change the style in my flat is by decorating with fresh flowers – it’s such an inexpensive (sometimes even free if you pick your own!) way to bring new and fresh color into a space.

I’m looking forward to all the blooming flowers you can find now that the weather is getting nicer – what are your favorite flowers?

    A sweet little breakfast

    Hey guys,

Sven and I had this delicious breakfast the other morning – I woke up with a serious craving for an apple turn over so he went down to the bakery across the street and picked out a few pastries. Besides the sweets, we had a pretty healthy breakfast otherwise: chia-coconut granola with apple and almond milk, fresh berry smoothie, and cappuccino – so good!

It’s so nice that he enjoys eating many of the foods I like – I think that good, healthy food might be the keystone of our relationship 😛 Just kidding… but it’s something we both really appreciate.

Hope you all have a nice week!

    Spring Prints

    March 23, 2017

    Hello Lovelies,

Above are a few photos from the living room. I added a few new prints around the flat which I’ll be sharing as I have time to photograph them. I really like how this one looks, but I still feel like the wall behind my sofa is still “missing something”.

Maybe this is because it’s so large and the ceilings are so tall – something about it is still off to me. I’m thinking that I want to make a gallery wall with many more prints behind the sofa to draw your eye up along all the empty white space. I’ve been Pinning a lot of ideas that I like on my board “Art and Prints” – maybe I’ll add to the prints on this wall like some of the inspiration I’ve seen. My brother and his wife gave me a really lovely black and white print for Christmas which I still need to buy a frame for – I think it will become part of the gallery wall when I finally get it framed! I went to the store the other day in search of a frame to fit it, but I couldn’t find the correct size. I did buy a few frames for different prints though like the one above 🙂

I’ve always loved this Prada Marfa print however – if you don’t know the full story behind it, you can read about it here. I like that it’s a cheeky statement towards the couture fashion industry.

Anyways, work has been kicking my ass lately and I’ve been really drained. I’m in need of a holiday and June just can’t come soon enough. It will be so nice to get away and experience something different. Sven and I have been speaking a lot about the travel we want to do together when I finally get the time. Hopefully that will come soon too! Our plan is to buy a print from each place we visit to keep as a memory – I can only hope that our home will be covered with memories from all over the world as time goes on 🙂

    xoxo

    Weekend updates

    March 12, 2017

    Hi guys,

Hope you all had a lovely weekend!

Mine has been pretty relaxed. Sven is away in Boston with the guys this week, so I spent most of my weekend with Ashley having girl time – always so much fun!

I also spent a little bit of time playing around with my new camera. Above are a few shots a snapped after tidying up the house on Saturday.

I decided to get the Sony a6000 since I wasn’t too excited about hauling my DSLR around with me while Sven and I travel – that camera is just so bulky and awkward to carry. So far, I’m really enjoying this new Sony setup. It’s so much smaller than my Cannon DSLR, but from what I’ve experienced the image quality is very nice for such a compact mirrorless camera.

    Talk soon,

Life is busy, but at least there’s coffee

    February 28, 2017

    Hello!

I just wanted to share a quick update on life – my gosh, has it been busy!

Work is going well but is keeping me super swamped – Right now I’m in one of those seasons where I ask myself why there aren’t more hours in the day! At least I have coffee 😛

I’m really excited and have been working my buns off to get ready for NeoCon in Chicago. In June, we’re launching a collection that myself and the Davis design team have worked really hard on! I can’t wait to tell you guys more about it! But for now, I have to keep the details a secret. I can give you a hint though – it’s some type of furniture 😉

As soon as we release pre-NeoCon photos, I’ll be sure to share them here! But in the meantime, here’s a little video of our showroom from last year – Davis Showroom. This is where we’ll be launching our new products 🙂

Sven and I have also been really busy together – his schedule is a bit different than mine because his day usually ends around 9:00 pm (oh, the life of a graduate student). Somehow, he still manages to wake up with me every morning between 5:30 and 6:00 am. Well actually, he normally wakes up before me and then wakes me up a little bit later with espresso… How kind!

Beyond that, I’ve been getting busy at the gym again which feels really good! After Mexico and getting sick over the holidays, I sort of fell out of the habit of working out routinely. I joined the sports center where Sven goes so now we can workout together – or at least be in the same building while we do separate workouts 😛

Anyways, that’s most of what has been happening in my life lately!

    New Naked

    February 23, 2017

    Hey babes,

I got these two Naked compacts from Urban Decay – I really like them both so much!

Also, I bought new makeup brushes from amazon in hopes of maybe clearing up the acne I’ve been dealing with as of late (I was that maybe my old collection of brushes were harboring germs). While my skin still hasn’t cleared up completely, I’m still really happy with these brushes! They are so pretty and I like that they are made from rose gold metal 🙂

    Find then here!

    Color Pop

    February 21, 2017

    Hey guys,

Here are a few recent photos from my home – I got these pretty flowers a while ago and they are still going strong. Even though they are so simple, fresh flowers just make me so happy!

    I’m off to bed though!

    February – From my iPhone

    February 14, 2017

    Hi babes,

This is cheesy, but I wanted to share a few of my favorite iPhone photos of Sven and I – you know, because it’s Valentine’s Day 😛

I’m greatful to have a partner who is so fun, smart, caring, and patient – our life is good and I’m reminded of that every day by all the good we get to experience together.

    Berry Acai Bowl

    February 8, 2017

Here’s a recipe for a delicious, healthy, and easy to make acai bowl!

    Berry Acai Bowl

    Ingredients:

    – for blending –

frozen acai (about a handful worth)
frozen black berries (another handful worth)
vegan milk alturnative (I used coconut almond milk for this recipe)
    banana

    – topping ideas –

    chia seeds
    coconut flakes
    sliced fruit
    nuts
    or anything else you fancy

    Directions:

In your blender, combine the frozen acai berries, frozen black berries, peeled banana, and vegan milk alternative. I always start out with a small amount of milk when mixing and then add more as I mix in order to get the right consistency. Once everything is well blended, pour into a bowl and top with whatever yummy toppings you have on hand! I like to used a lot of chia seeds because they are a great source of protein, and coconut flakes because they add an amazing crunch.

    Enjoy!

    Rosé all day

    February 2, 2017

    Hi guys,

During the weekend, Sven and I went shopping for a few things and I picked out some pretty flowers while we were out – they make the apartment feel so fresh and I love the color. Can you tell that I’m a bit obsessed? 😉

Also, I thought I would share my favorite sunglasses right now – these beauties from Ray Ban which you can find here!

I picked mine up at Macy’s because they are running a buy-one, get-one $40 off sale right now – score!

I’m super ready for it to be the weekend though and I’m glad that there is only 1 more day to get through after today – work has been kicking my butt lately! Not that I’m complaining, but I always look forward to the much needed downtime the weekends bring.

Tomorrow afternoon, I’ll be starting off the weekend with a facial right after work – my skin has been so broken out lately and I can’t seem to figure out why, so hopefully seeing an esthetician will help. I’ve had occasional acne in the past which usually seemed to be hormonal, but for the last year it has been worse than I’ve ever experienced and has left my skin very bumpy and scarred. At this point, I’m willing to give anything a try! I’m thinking that I will take before and after photos. If I can manage to find a solution that works for my acne, I’ll be sure to share it so that hopefully others won’t have to go through what I’ve gone through!

    Talk soon,

    RG
