June in Color ~ Interior Updates

    July 1, 2021
Interior Design Inspo - Grey Sofa

Settling into a new home is a journey. But instead of rushing through, I’m here for the process.

To follow up on yesterday’s black and white themed blogpost about life in Munich, I thought I would share a few interior updates from June, but in color. Over the last month, we’ve made a lot of progress to turn our new apartment into a home. But of course, we’re still in the early stages.

There are quite a few things I still need to sort out, but we’ve reach the point where all the essentials are in place and it’s now just a matter of finetuning the little details. Eventually, I want to upsize our sofa and add a few more comfortable lounge pieces to the living room. But I’m enjoying the process of slowly designing each space. Even though we have more room in this flat, I’m maintaining my minimalist mindset and want to keep things fresh and open. I love the feeling of an empty wall or unoccupied corner — space that leaves room for thought and soothes the mind.

I’ve already finished some DIY projects and have plans for a few more to come. My next big undertaking will be to re-finish the vintage highboard we bought just before leaving Berlin. I spent several days in June sewing ‘wave style’ curtains for our bedroom and hallway, and will make other curtains for the dining and living room later on when I find more time. The first sets I finished turned out just as I had imagined, so I’m thrilled to have finally decided to invest in a sewing machine — I feel like the possibilities are endless now.

I’ll keep sharing updates as the space develops. I’m most excited to reveal the images from our dining room. A few days after we moved to Munich, my first order of bespoke designs arrived for By Rebecca Goddard. There were two dining tables with the first order, both handmade from beautiful stone. I haven’t yet unveiled the design, which is the main reason why I’ve not been sharing wide-angle photos of our dining room yet (or the view into the other rooms for that matter since they are all connected). I don’t want to ruin the surprise until I’m ready to launch these first bespoke pieces. Of course, our home is also doubling as my showroom so many of the early images I share for byrg will have been created here. Once I have my label’s website finished, I’ll be sharing the view into our dining room quite often.

    Xx Rebecca

June in Black & White ~ Munich Updates

    June 30, 2021
Black & White Summer Vibes, June in Munich, Alps

Summer is in full swing, June has passed by, and Sven and I are rounding off our first month living in Munich. Life is treating us well, and we’re feeling at home already — in our flat, the city, and in the surrounding nature too.

Here are a few highlights from our first month down south in Bavaria. I had only been to Munich once before we moved (to visit our apartment) so I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. So far, there’s been zero disappointment. Of course it’s been difficult to move away from my friends in Berlin, but aside from missing them, I’ve found myself really enjoying every other aspect of life here. The streets are lined with beautiful facades, the green space is abundant, and the pace of life feels a bit calmer.

It helps tremendously that Covid restrictions have scaled back a lot since we’ve arrived, and the weather has been warm and sunny. Sven and I have spent the weekends exploring the city and the surrounding areas outside of Munich. Time in nature is becoming a part of our lifestyle again, and we’ve been making it a point to get ourselves into the mountains or near a lake at least once a week. On Sunday, we ventured out for a daytrip to Linderhof Palace, a tiny baroque castle nestled in the Alps, and I can only recommend a visit. On the way back, I drove for the first time since getting my German drivers license — an exciting day especially since I basically haven’t been behind the wheel in four years! It’s a freedom that I’ve missed.

Beyond our weekend explorations, I’ve been busy with different work projects and settling into my new routine. With the Isar so near by, I’ve picked up running again and have been loving my jogs alongside the river a few days a week. I have some big updates to share soon for the development of my own design label, By Rebecca Goddard. There’s still a lot on my plate to get finalized before I’m ready for the launch, and the unexpected move did slow me down a great deal, but I’m taking my time so that it can be the best I can possibly make it.

    Xx Rebecca

Decadent ~ The Dream Summer Carryall

    June 21, 2021
    Decadent Copenhagen Teddy Leather Tote

If you’re on the hunt for the perfect summer carryall, let me introduce you to my latest wardrobe obsession: the Teddy Tote by Decadent Copenhagen.

[AD] This gorgeous bag comes in a beautiful range of colors, but I’ve fallen absolutely in love with this delicious caramel tone. The dulce de leche vibes are perfect for summer, and it pairs beautifully with both a crisp white look or chic black ensemble. The leather is buttery soft and, like most Decadent bags, features a stunning mix of tone-on-tone gold and silver hardware. It’s big enough to fit all your essentials for a day in town, with lots of extra room to carry your shopping. I’ve been toting Teddy around to my regular visits to the riverside since there’s plenty of space to fit my picnic blanket, water bottle, hat, sunscreen, and snacks galore.

I’m truly smitten with this bag’s silhouette and classic top-handle design, so much so that I also have the design in the Minna version — Teddy’s stunning little sister. Just like the smaller Minna bag, Teddy can also be carried as a shoulder-bag and comes with a detachable leather strap which clips into the interior.

For over 15 years, the Copenhagen-based brand has worked with a single artisan manufacturer in Turkey who carefully hand-crafts each Decadent item. With a design approach that mirrors Scandinavian values of timeless simplicity and functional sensibility, Decadent bags are elegant and ageless, but practical for the everyday and well-wearing for the years ahead. If you’re curious to learn more about the story of Decadent, head over to this article where I’ve shared an interview with Karina Mundt Holst, Decadent’s founder and creative director.

Tangent GC ~ Organic Skin & Garment Care

    June 20, 2021
Tangent GC Organic Skincare, Hand Wash & Home Products

New home, new scents — Now that we’re settled into our new apartment, I wanted to upgrade a few of the essential care products around our home. A wonderful range of items from Tangent GC recently arrived, and I’ve been loving the fragrances and natural ingredients.

Tangent GC is a Stockholm-based label specializing in organic care-focused products for your wardrobe and body. All of their items are produced in both Sweden and France, and are made solely from natural ingredients. What originally began as a line of garment care goods has grown into a full range of products for the body as well. Just as their soaps and hand creams are made to nourish and protect your skin, TGC’s detergents and fabric sprays are designed specifically to prolong the life of your clothing and omit degenerating harsh chemicals found in most traditional laundry soaps.

I always assign extra points when a product’s packaging is as lovely as whatever’s inside, and of course all of Tangent GC’s goods present fabulously thanks to their pared-back design. The metal soap Wall Bracket is one of TGC’s newest items, and it’s perfect for smaller bathrooms with limited counter space, like our guest WC. With a high-strength self-adhesive backing, installing the soap bracket was as simple as peeling off the sticker and pressing it to the wall. The FIR and OUD scents are two of my personal favorites from Tangent GC’s line. Although completely unique from each other, both are defined by a blend of woody notes that are masculine and clear, without being overpowering.

The YUZU Fabric Spray has also been quick to become a handy must-have for me. For many years already, I’ve been reducing the number of washes I subject my garments to, which has helped extend the life of my favorite pieces. This spray diminishes both odors and bacteria that linger on fibers, making it super ideal to use in between washes. I’ll absolutely be packing this one along with me the next time we travel, since it’s be perfect for a quick fabric refresh while on the road.

    A Fresh Start In Munich

    June 15, 2021
München Altbau Wohnung Mieten | Interior Design Inspo | Rebecca Goddard

After several weeks of radio silence here on RG Daily, I’m finally ready to share the exciting news! Life has been overwhelmingly busy and so much has changed since my last update.

So here’s the big news: Sven and I moved to Munich! Was this something we had planned on doing? No, not at all… but it’s been an amazing new chapter in our life that’s already off to a beautiful start. So, why exactly did we uproot our lives in Berlin to be in the heart of Bavaria? Towards the end of April, Sven’s work asked if he would be willing to relocate to Munich to head a new department. Originally, they asked him if he would be able to start the position at the beginning of May, but we both agreed that planning a relocation in a week-and-a-half was out of the question. So the official start date for his new job was set for the beginning of June, and we got busy getting everything prepare and in order. Organizing all the details, finding a new apartment, and finding tenants for our Berlin flat became a part-time-job, and so I decided to press pause on my blog articles until life calmed down again.

Considering how quickly the change came about, I’ve felt incredibly good along the way. It was an intense but smooth transition. We moved out of our Berlin flat and across country into our new Munich apartment on the same day, May 31st. Since then, we’ve been settling in while taking the time to enjoy our new surroundings. Moving away so suddenly from my friends in Berlin and the home we had built there was emotional for me, but I’m already feeling very comfortable with our new life in the south. Summer is absolutely the best time to move, regardless of the destination, and we’ve been happily exploring our neighborhood, the banks of the Isar, the city, and the surrounding mountains and lakes. I was quite picky when it came to what we were looking for in an apartment. Thankfully we landed in a dreamy altbau full of historic architectural character and loads of charm. It’s as if the stars aligned for us!

Since sharing the news of our move on IG, many people have reached out to asked me how we found our Munich flat. Much like Berlin, finding an apartment in Munich can be an exhausting emotional roller-coaster. Since Sven and I were under such intense time pressure, we opted for hiring a broker agency called KLN to help us find a flat. I feel like it’s the best decision we made in this whole process, and the agency we went with truly delivered when it came to presenting us with options that ticked all the boxes on our ‘wish-list’. Because we were looking afar from Berlin, it would have also become wildly costly and time consuming to travel back and fourth between cities for flat viewings. Having the agency do the scouting for us made it all so much easier. So if you are searching for a flat and are short on time, I would highly recommend taking the agency route. The deal is that you only have to pay their fee if you actually take one of the apartments they present you, so there’s not much to lose if your broker turns up empty-handed in the end. I was extremely impressed by how quickly they found us our dream flat, and it was actually the only apartment I visited in Munich while we were searching.

I wanted to share all these updates to get you all up-to-speed with the big changes. I’m really excited to begin making our Munich flat into a calming home for Sven and I. It already feel so good! I have a lot of small projects to finish in the coming days (like sewing curtains, installing some storage, ect). Thankfully the apartment had already been renovated before we moved in (unlike our old flat in Berlin) but it still shares many of the beautiful turn-of-the-century features and soul that I’ve fallen in love with — dreamy cornicing, herringbone parkett, high ceilings, etched door handles, ect. Here are a few photos snapped from our first two weeks in Munich. I’m looking forward to sharing lots of new interior articles in the weeks ahead!

    Xx Rebecca

    Neutral Tones & Springtime Updates

    April 21, 2021
Beige Interior Livingroom Design Inspo | Rebecca Goddard

Spring has finally arrived in Berlin, and life somehow feels busier than ever. Thankfully we’ve had a few sunny days to help keep my energy high, and the weather has finally warmed up enough to enjoy my favorite springtime outfits.

After far too many weeks without posting, I’m finally here to break the silence with a few updates on life (accompanied by lots of photos that I’ve snapped over the past weeks). Compared to last year, which seemed to slide by at glacier speed, this year has been flying past me at a rate I can hardly keep up with! Currently, my days are still split between work and intensive online German courses. My main goal this year is to earn my German citizenship, so of course having a firm grasp of the language is a huge aspect of accomplishing this. Once I’ve completed a few more courses, I’ll need to pass two formal exams (one for language, and one for culture and politics) before my application can be processed. It’s exciting and daunting all at once!

On top of my studies, I’ve also been busy with a few very special design projects. There are so many things that I’ve been secretly  developing, and I’m excited to finally be able to share them with you all when the time comes. These projects are the start of a new chapter for me, and it feels really great to be pursuing this passion. For years, I’ve wanted to produce my own designs, but I always allowed something to hold me back from taking those first steps. Not any longer though, and in the weeks to come I’ll finally be able to share what I’ve ben working towards. If you’re curious to see more, you can visit my new IG account @byrebeccagoddard. I’ll continue to share small hints until the time comes for my official product launch.

Below, you can scroll through photos that I’ve snapped in the recent weeks. A few vintage mid-century pieces have moved into our home that I’ve carefully refinished (like the wooden chairs and bench). I’ve also hung a few of my own paintings around the home too, one which you can see near our little dining table. Hope you enjoy scrolling through these photos!

    Sézane ~ Delicate Spring Knitwear

    March 22, 2021
Sézane Cream Knit Blouse, French Fashion

With spring chirping at our windowsills, I’ve found myself in the mood for lighter tones and airy knitwear — pieces that signify all the romantic and laidback vibes that accompany a shift to warmer weather.

This gorgeous knit blouse by Sézane is one of those pieces — with delicate detailing that’s enough to make your heart flutter. Knitted from a buttery soft blend of OEKO-TEX certified viscose derived from wool pulp, the Ronnie jumper comes from Sézane’s fully traceable manufacturing process.

In true Parisian style, the scalloped square neckline is feminine and flirty — beautifully highlighting the décolletage while the slightly ballooned sleeves add volume that contrasts the fitted bodice. Here, I’m showing the cream Ronnie blouse styled with classic black high-waisted trousers, but the top also looks fabulous with a pair of vintage denim — a perfect combination for a relaxed spring feeling.

URBANARA ~ Dreamy Grey-Beige Linen Curtains

    March 17, 2021
Airy Living Room, Beige Linen Curtains, Grey Sofa

Swathing your windows in dreamy linen is the perfect way to transform any room into an oasis of calm. Just this week, I finally hung beautiful natural linen curtains by URBANARA in our living room and I couldn’t be more satisfied with the outcome.

Finding the right curtains can be a tricky endeavor, and I’ve spent months going back-and-fourth on what exactly we needed to create a soothing and airy ambiance without getting too whimsical. Finally after weeks of searching, I discovered URBANARA’s beautiful Zelva Curtains in natural linen. The tone of the material is a stunning mixture between beige and gray, gently shifting throughout the day as the light changes.

These curtains are sold in a set of two panels, and are available in two lengths, 240cm and 320cm. The length of most ‘ready-made’ curtains typically maxes-out at 300cm, which has made it next to impossible to find something long enough to accommodate the height of our tall ceilings. So if you’ve also been on the hunt for extra-long curtains and aren’t ready to shell-out a hefty amount of euros on something that’s made-to-order, be sure to explore all of URBANARA’s many styles, they have a lovely selection online.

The Zelva Curtains are made in Lithuania from 100% natural linen. The weave is soft yet weighty, and the light transmits beautifully through the material. I’ve opted to hang these using metal rings since I prefer the wave-optic you get when installed this way. But it’s also possible to hang these curtains by simply slipping the rod through the pocket sewn on the top.

Another small but impactful update I made was to swap-out the white curtain rods for a black finish, creating one single line. I wanted to use the architectural detail of the metal rod to draw connections to other elements in the space, such as the black cord from which our Nurra pendent is suspended. Using these types of more functional details to tie together various objects and pieces in a room can help create a beautiful and refined sense of congruency, and will most certainly add an edge of sophistication. I still have it on my to-do-list to hand-sew each ring to the top of the curtain header, to create a more customized look. But that’s a project for a different week! For now, I’m going to relax and enjoy the beautiful softened light and calming atmosphere.

Filippa K ~ The Story of Swedish Wool

    March 16, 2021
Filippa K, Swedish Wool, Max Sweater

For three years, Sweden-based fashion label Filippa K has been on a mission to develop a better way of sourcing wool – one that’s fully-traceable, locally based, and more conscious. As a result, they’ve created an entirely new supply chain with true Scandinavian origins.

To make their Swedish Wool, Filippa K works with three small farms in rural Sweden. The sheep that live on these farms are regularly sheered throughout the seasons for their comfort, so Filippa K had the vision to develop a use for this wool that was otherwise going to waste. The wool from these three farms is collected and then prepared for spinning at a wash house on the Swedish island of Gotland.

From there, the cleaned wool is transported to Italy where it’s spun into yarn. When it’s ready, the yarn journeys to Romania where it’s been carefully knitted into a Max Sweater. Typically, the average wool sweater travels over 20,000 km throughout its production process, since most wool is sourced from far away places like Australia or South Africa. So by sourcing wool locally from Sweden, Filippa K has been able to reduce their supply chain length and carbon impact by 75%.

    ~

This season’s Swedish Wool has been knitted to take the shape of The Max Sweater — a perfectly oversized, unisex, and natural garment that’s made in limited quantities from 100% Swedish Wool. If you’re interested to learn more about Filippa K’s award-winning Swedish Wool supply chain, or wish to have your own classic Max Sweater to take you from season to season, check out the links below. Only 300 Max Sweaters have been produced (this being one of them) so supplies are quite limited. I’m wearing size XS, so you can see that the fit of the sweater is wonderfully oversized.

Decadent ~ The Minna Everyday Tote

    March 12, 2021
Decadent Copenhagen Minna Brown Leather Tote Bag | Fashion | RG Daily Blog

Today I’m here to introduce you to my favorite design from Decadent’s latest collection, the Minna Tote in beautiful Vegetal Mocha leather — a perfectly-size mini-tote that’s utterly seasonless and an absolute dream to style.

Minna is a part of Decadent’s latest family of tote-bags, and is the smallest style in the collection. I’ve been sporting this gorgeous handbag around with every chance I get, especially since she’s easy to style with my entire wardrobe. The subtle but stunning details (such as the tone-on-tone gold and silver hardware, and delicate contrast stitching) are what make this bag a real eye-catcher.

I absolutely adore it’s silhouette and classic top-handle design, and the size couldn’t be better either — not the least bit bulky, but large enough to carry all my every-day essentials and work notebooks with room to spare. Minna can also be carried as a shoulder-bag and comes with a detachable leather strap which clips into the interior. And of course, the bag is hand-made from Decadent’s finest vegetable-tanned leather.

If you’re curious to learn more about the story of Decadent, head over to this post where I’ve shared an interview with Karina Mundt Holst, Decadent’s founder and creative director.

SOFACOMPANY ~ Dreamy Custom Upholstered Designs

    February 24, 2021
SOFACOMPANY, Maya Cream Boucle, Beige Interior Aesthetic

Based out of Denmark, SOFACOMPANY‘s online shop is a go-to destination to discover stunning lounge furniture that can be custom-upholstered in their gorgeous range of textiles.

SOFACOMPANY has a beautiful selection and (as their name suggests) they specialize specifically in sofas and lounge pieces. All of their designs carry a contemporary edge that’s driven by the brand’s Scandinavian roots, and each upholstered item can be made-to-order in the fabric of your choosing from their in-house textiles.

Two beautiful accent pieces from SOFACOMPANY moved into our home recently, both upholstered in a creamy bouclé fabric of my dreams. I love the voluminous feeling and generous proportions of the Babette Lounge, designed by Katrine Bjørn. It looks stunning in just about every corner of our home, and its seat is relatively wide and open, inviting you to sit down and relax for a bit. The chair is fixed onto a swivel base, allowing you to gently sway as you sit and making it ideal to use in-between spaces. Right now we have it positioned between our dining area and lounge setting, so the swivel factor connects the two individual spaces fabulously.

The No. 9 Ottoman is a favorite as well, and it works perfectly in front of our sofa — so perfectly in fact, I have my feet propped up on it as I’m writing this post. I’ve always found these types of puffs to be incredibly practical since you can use them just about anywhere — in front of a lounge, at the foot of the bed, next to the wardrobe, as a seat for a vanity, for a child’s room, the options are endless! SOFACOMPANY carries the same design in a range of sizes as well, so it’s easy to find the right-sized puff for just about any space.

    Choosing The Perfect Upholstery Fabric

Selecting the perfect fabric for lounge furniture can be quite a dilemma, and it’s important to choose a textile that suits your taste just as much as your lifestyle. When making fabric selections for accent pieces, such as our Babette Lounge and No. 9 Ottoman, I often gravitate towards textiles with character (like SOFACOMPANY’s Maya Cream). Even in neutral tones, an accent piece upholstered in a wonderfully tactile bouclé is sure to be eye-catching, and it will add a beautiful level of depth to the space.

When selecting fabrics for larger pieces such as sofas and sectionals, I tend to lean towards subtle weave options in neutral tones. These types of lounge pieces are often the largest element of furniture in a space, and are also usually a sizable investment too. Because of this, I find it important to select a fabric that’s versatile and ageless. While I certainly appreciate the visual impact a bold statement color can bring to a room, I always recommend choosing a mid-range neutral color for sofa upholstery (like SOFACOMPANY’s Vega Sand Dune). This will give you a tremendous amount of flexibility throughout the years, allowing your sofa to evolve with your home as your style preferences, color pallets, and design aesthetics shift over time.

Beyond color and style, it’s also important to review the durability of the fabric you select. The longevity of upholstery textiles are globally rated based on three key aspects — abrasion resistance, color fastness, and pilling. A fabric’s abrasion resistance rating (also called Martindale or rub-count) measures the durability of its resistance to showing signs of wear. Color fastness measures the fabrics resistance to fading from light exposure or cleaning, and the pilling rating measures the fiber’s tendency of shedding or balling.

    Complimentary Fabric Samples From SOFACOMPANY

SOFACOMPANY’s design team understands that shopping for upholstered furniture online can be a tricky endeavor. That’s why they offer 5 complimentary fabric samples of your choosing, which they will send to you for free. Simply visit their website to make your selection, and in a few days your fabric samples will arrive in your mailbox! Currently, SOFACOMPANY ships to eight unique countries within Northern Europe and Scandinavia. You can visit their website to check availability in your country.

When shopping online, colors and textures can often appear differently than in reality, so having a chance to review each fabric in person can make all the difference and help you select your dream sofa or lounge with true confidence and peace-of-mind. It’s helpful to review each textile you’re considering in the context of your own home, and at different times of the day to see how the color will react as the light changes. It’s also wonderfully convenient to compare the fabrics with other colors and elements in your home, testing them with both warm and cool tones, so that you can be sure it pairs perfectly and no color-conflicts occur.

As mentioned above, be sure to review the durability factor of the fabric you select based on your intended use. To ensure that your upholstered furniture will wear well for many years, try to select fabrics with abrasion resistance (Martindale) ratings over 30,000. For color fastness and pilling, fabrics with ratings over 3 usually endure nicely for at-home use. All of SOFACOMPANY’s fabrics are rated on these key factors, which you can review online and on the back of each fabric sample.

Maison Christian Dior ~ Fragrance Escape

    January 22, 2021
    Maison Christian Dior, Ambre Nuit

Escapism by fragrance can be one of life’s most simple pleasures, and scents by Maison Christian Dior can certainly elevate a fragrant journey in the most luxurious of ways.

Through Ambre Nuit, Maison Christian Dior explores the olfactory balance between feminine and masculine. Based on a woody and floral blend that’s rich in character, the warm and powdery scent of amber is beautifully counterbalanced by velvety Turkish rose — creating a soothing but intense fragrance that can be worn and relished by women and men alike.

While Ambre Nuit happens to be one of my favorite perfumes from the collection, Dior has an entire fragrant world to explore with something to offer for every preference. If you’re interested in discovering a Maison Christian Dior fragrance yourself, Dior allows you to test the perfume first before you decide if it’s right for you. And, if you’re seeking to treat yourself to something extra special or searching for a thoughtful gift, any of Dior’s fragrant soaps are a wonderful option and produce the most decadent, silky lather.
