Atmosphere
While it’s hard to imagine the hotel looking any other way than it does today, Parkhotel Mondschein indeed has a storied history. For countless decades, the hotel has been an institution of Bolzano, welcoming guests from all around the world. Prior to the hotel’s renovation and grand reopening in May of 2022, it was known as Parkhotel Luna. With architecture and design studio Biquadra at the helm, the hotel has been reinvigorated through design that honors a bygone era. To visit Parkhotel Mondschein is to embark on a two-part journey. Arriving in Bolzano always feels a bit like entering a dream state. The city itself seems to have been tucked away in a secret sun-drench valley — one encompassed by rolling green hills and majestic mountain peaks. The second part of the journey begins as soon as you set foot through the hotel’s doors. Inside its ivy-covered walls, memories of times past mix with the contemporary mood of today, taking you on a journey through time and history. In fact, many artifacts from the hotel’s former days have been thoughtfully incorporated throughout the hotel — refurbished mid-century furnishings, vintage silver serving pieces, antique chandeliers and artwork alike. And of course, great care was taken to preserve many of the building’s original historic features, such as the neoclassical balconies and the hotel’s grand terrazzo staircase.

Accommodations
During our visit, Sven and I stayed in one of the hotel’s spacious top-floor Suites. With views overlooking the lush hotel park, across the old-town rooftops, and onto the rocky Dolomites beyond, we found ourselves experiencing many a ‘pinch me’ moment as we settled in. Thanks to the comfy king-sized bed and separate living room complete with a lounge settinga and writing desk, we both agreed that our suite would be perfect for longer stays too. The ample space and soothing tones of the interior made us feel right at home, and I particularly enjoyed all the thoughtful details that speak to the hotel’s past. Within every room at Mondschein, colors and materials play a key role in creating a warm and refined ambiance. Soft tones of taupe are combined with an unexpected contrast between olive greens and rusty reds, complimented by a blend of rich materials such as walnut, brass, and velvet. No detail feels forgotten, yet nothing appears overdone or fussy. And with eight room categories to choose from, the hotel has something to suit every guest’s unique needs.

Amenities
If relaxation and personal restorement is what you’re seeking, Parkhotel Mondschein has a lot to offer. Those looking to make a true mind-body connection will find everything they need in the hotel’s fitness center, yoga studio, and spa area. Guests are welcome to partake in regular yoga sessions in the beautiful Arise studio, and the space is also available for use when classes aren’t in session. There’s also a fully equip gym for those looking for an added burn. Afterwards, its best to take a moment in the aspen wood sauna before heading to the park’s lounge beds for an afternoon nap as the tree limbs and fringe-trimmed sun umbrellas dance in the breeze.

Dining at the Hotel
In keeping with old-world hotel tradition, Mondschein’s bar and restaurant is the absolute heart of the establishment. Here is where guests gather at all hours of day and night, together or alone, for a meal, a snack, a drink, or simply to be in the midst of it all. Guests have the option to soak up the sun from tables and lounge settings that line the park or partake in the retro-chic atmosphere inside. Regardless of what our agenda was for the day, Sven and I always found ourselves back at Luna Bar — be it for a coffee, cocktail, or relaxed dinner in. You’ll also find a kiosk in the center of the park, which draws a local crowd particularly on weekends. The spirit is lively and communal — the type of atmosphere that makes you feel as if you’re amongst old friends. During breakfast hours, Luna Bar is also the place to be. Each morning, guests are welcome to enjoy a delicious assortment of healthy and local selections served a la carte. My personal breakfast favorite is the Arise Yogi Porridge and fresh-pressed juice. Regardless, it’s impossible to go wrong.
