Tucked away in the rolling hills of the Dolomites, Schgaguler Hotel is an oasis of design and wellness. Just a few weeks ago, Sven and I were lucky enough to escape to this hotel for a tranquil Alpine getaway. What we experienced was a thoughtful combination of minimalistic design contrasted by the majestic mountainous landscape of South Tyrol — all brought together by friendly hospitality and pared-back luxury.

Accommodations & Amenities
During our visit, Sven and I stayed in a beautiful Classic Room on the fourth floor. The light-filled interior was perfectly appointed with a spacious king-sized bed, sculptural soaking tub, rainfall shower, WC, and ample storage. All of the 42 rooms and suites at Schgaguler Hotel have their own private balcony (with the exception of the Town Suite which faces the front of the building). We loved watching the evening sun drench the surrounding mountains and hills in warm light from our little balcony, and I also liked the view onto the hotels outdoor terrace where you’ll find a small pool. After a morning of hiking, Sven and I spent the afternoons at the hotel spa and sun terrace. Each space has a feeling of calmness which pulls you in and calls you to relax.

Design & Atmosphere
Although Schgaguler Hotel presents as entirely new and contemporary, the property actually has an impressive history and renovation story. Family run for two generations, Schgaguler has been welcoming guests for decades. In 2018, the architectural oversight of Peter Pichler transformed the building and hotel into what we see today, rendering its original 1980s façade and interior almost unrecognizable. In contrast to the other rustic-style Alpine structures in the region, this cubic hotel is anything but expected. Nevertheless, local materials are thoughtfully woven throughout the properties visual language. Bespoke chestnut carpentry from regional forests give the interior a sense of warmth, and the large glass windows which encase both the front and back façades reflect the sky and surrounding nature. Every element has been thoughtfully selected, from the mix of Scandinavian furniture to the pared-back colors and minimal finishing. But although the interior is reduced, the atmosphere at the hotel is still warm and inviting. We felt right at home, spending long evenings playing cards in the hotel bar or enjoying a quite moment for reflection in one of the hotel’s many lounge areas tucked throughout the light-filled hallways.

Breakfast & Dining
At Schgaguler, guests have the option to book breakfast only or half-board. We opted for the latter and enjoyed all of our meals throughout the weekend at the hotel. The cuisine at the restaurant is based on a modern blending of local flavors with a Mediterranean twist, featuring a four course menu that changes each night. Their in-house sommelier is also happy to guide you through their local wine menu so that you can find the best pairing for your meal. During breakfast hours, guests get to enjoy a fresh mix of Alpine classics which are served a la-carte. I particularly loved the restaurant atmosphere — think contemporary design meets Alpine chic. And if you’re lucky, you might even snag a table next to the floor to ceiling window which offers incredible views over the mountain face.

Local Surroundings
Schgaguler is located in the charming mountain town of Castelrotto, just at the foot of the Alpe di Siusi. Sweeping views of the Dolomites are all around, their stony peeks juxtaposed by rolling alpine hills in lush green. Regardless if you’re an avid hiker, or simply up for a laidback stroll in the surrounding nature, there’s something for every degree of outdoorsman. Sven and I took the opportunity to set off on a early morning hike during our stay (I’ve included a few photos of that below). Thanks to the proximity of the hotel, we were able to catch an unforgettable sunrise over the imposing Massiccio dello Sciliar. The concierge at the front desk was happy to help us plan our route, outlining all our options for getting to the trailhead by car, bus, or gondola. They also of course gave us tips for where to hike for the best views. I could not have imagined a better start into the day, and the scenery was 100% worth the early wakeup time. During the winter months, Schgaguler Hotel also makes the perfect base camp for those into winter sports since there’s no shortage of ski-lifts in the surrounding area. Whatever you’re in the mood for, the hotel will be happy to guide you through your adventure planning.
