In the heart of Berlin’s embassy district between the Zoo and Tiergarten Park, you’ll find SO/ Berlin Das Stue — a boutique hotel steeped in architectural grandeur and modern luxury.
The historic building, which originally housed Berlin’s Royal Danish Embassy, has been wonderfully reinvigorated thanks to an exceptional combination of contemporary design and top-tier hospitality. In order to transform the stately embassy into a 5-star urban oasis, SO/ Berlin Das Stue worked with world-renowned Spanish architect and designer, Patricia Urquiola. Brilliantly juxtaposing the building’s stone-clad façade and grand foyer, modern elements and warm materials have been thoughtfully combined to create an atmosphere that’s warm, enveloping, and undeniably cosmopolitan.
Nods to the building’s Danish heritage can be spotted around Das Stue in the forms of Flos lamps and Arne Jacobsen chairs, details which deepen the living-room-like ambiance that flows throughout the hotel. But like Berlin itself, the soul of SO/ Berlin Das Stue pulses with expressive style and art. Animals sculptures by artist like Quentin Garel and Benedetta Mori playfully underscore Das Stue’s unique proximity to the zoo — the hotel is so close, it even has it’s own private entrance.

A Weekend At SO/ Berlin Das Stue
Arriving At Das Stue
Sven and I decided to play tourists in our own city, checking into SO/ Berlin Das Stue for a relaxed weekend getaway. Even though the bustling streets of Kurfürstendamm are just minutes away from the hotel, the peaceful neighborhood and green surroundings give you the feeling you’re worlds away from the chaos of city life. During our time there, we were sure to absorb all that Das Stue has to offer.
A Room With A View
Our accommodations were on the top floor of the hotel — a bright and spacious SO Embassy Room which offered sweeping views over Tiergarten through floor to ceiling glass that let out onto an equally roomy private terrace. Soothing neutrals and muted green hues swathed the room in calm, and we enjoyed watching the sunrise each morning from our cloud-like bed. The bathroom was a dream as well, and I enjoyed a few long soaks in the tub while taking in the view over the park.
Dinner, Fine-Dining & Drinks
During our first night at Das Stue, we had a delicious tapas-style dinner at the hotel’s restaurant, The Casual. The menu there has a mix of creative Spanish-inspired dishes that are meant to be shared. The second restaurant at Das Stue, Cinco, has earned a Michelin star for its Spanish infused menus by chef Paco Pérezthe. Sven and I also stopped by the Stue Bar and lounge for specialty cocktails and a cozy night-cap.
Relaxed Mornings & Spa Moments
After a lazy Saturday morning lie-in, we enjoyed a fresh breakfast and then headed to the hotel spa for a session in the sauna and dip in the pool. SO/ Berlin Das Stue is the only hotel in Berlin offering luxury treatments by Susanne Kaufmann, and they have a great selection of services for both relaxation and beauty.
An Afternoon In The City
After spending a bit of time drifting around the hotel and enjoying the library and cozy reading nooks, Sven and I headed out for a bit of shopping and stroll through Kudamm. We ended our afternoon adventure with snacks at the KaDeWe’s gourmet food hall — the iconic department store and embassy building that now houses SO/ Berlin Das Stue were designed by the same architect, Johann Emil Schaudt.
Traveling Safe
Because of Covid-19, Das Stue has made a few adjustments to keep guests safe and comfortable. Much to my delight, the gourmet hotel breakfast is served a la cart, and guests who wish to use the spa and fitness areas of the hotel are asked to schedule an appointment before hand. In my opinion, these changes make each experience all that more relaxed, luxurious, and personalized — feelings I always hope to experience at a 5-star hotel like SO/ Berlin Das Stue.
