Hello! Here are some photos from our (almost) perfect day on the water.
Today, Sven and I decided to go sailing. We made some sandwiches, got on our summer clothes, and headed to the country-side lake where we rented a nice little sail boat.
Sven has sailed plenty of times back in Germany, but I’ve never sailed before so we were already off to a good start – I learned very quickly that sailing is a team activity that requires a fair amount of communication 😛
The wind was good and Sven was having fun showing me the ropes… literally.
The sun was also good and we were basically the only boat on the water – super perfect for tanning 😉
THEN the most unexpected thing happened… our mast completely broke off of our boat. A nice gust of wind came and – CRACK – just like that, it snapped off and we were stuck out in the middle of the lake with no engine, no oars, and no way to sail back to land without any other boat in sight.
Sven was worried that we were going to get a gust from under the sail that we hovering over the water and said we were in a really dangerous situation because it could flip us over completely – thankfully that didn’t happen.
I actually thought the whole situation was pretty funny and couldn’t help myself from laughing. It was just such a crazy thing to have happen in the middle of what, in all other regards, was a completely perfect Sunday on the water. Thankfully I had packed my cell phone in the dry bag, so we were able to call the marina and have someone come rescue us.
Once we were finally back on dry land, we finished our picnic and then headed back home – boy, did I get sunburnt! The man at the marina gave us a raincheck to come sailing again for free since our day was sort of “ruined” by the fact that our boat broke. We might go again next weekend since it is the last weekend we have together before he heads off for a month of travel before meeting me in Chicago for the furniture fair.
Anyways, that was our adventure for the weekend 😉
Talk soon,
RG
