Based out of Denmark, Vibeke Scott is a loungewear and interiors brand with nostalgic yet timeless design at its core. Their carefully assembled collection of dressing gowns, loungewear, kimonos, and small home accessories exudes Scandinavian elegance and quality – reminding us to return to a time when the garments we owned were treasured and adored.
Vibeke Scott was founded by two sisters, Nicole M. Langkilde and Chantall Scott. Since 1938, their family has had longstanding expertise in sewn-textiles through one of Scandinavia’s oldest flag manufacturers, Langkilde & Søn – a business that is also overseen by Nicole and Chantall today. However, their vision for Vibeke Scott was inspired by their grandmother, who bore the same name. Written on a small paper that accompanies each Vibeke Scott parcel, Nicole and Chantall share the inspiration behind their beautiful loungewear, and the formative role their grandmother played in inspiring the collection…
“We firmly believe that the purpose of a dressing gown is to add moments of luxury for the person whose shoulders it adorns – just like it did for our grandmother, Vibeke Scott. As young girls, we can remember seeing her at home, though she was dressing down to be comfortable when she wrapped herself in the elegance of a fabulous dressing gown, it seemed to us as though she was dressing up.” – Nicole and Chantall
As a woman with similar fond memories of my mother, grandmother, and aunts, this little excerpt resonated with me deeply. And after having come to age in the era of “athleisure wear”, I’ve grown to appreciate this more nostalgic, thoughtful, and delicate attitude towards “dressing down” for slow moments at home. It’s impossible to deny the way that slipping into a floor-skimming silk velvet robe will set the tone for a relaxing evening in, in the same way that applying your favorite shade of rouge sets the tone for a night out.
Although they are a relatively small brand, Vibeke Scott is seeking to go against the grain of fast-fashion in hopes of improving the industry and the future of our environment. Instead of releasing new items each season, Nicole and Chantall have made the conscious decision to put the items in the Vibeke Scott collection on a pedestal – celebrating their timelessness, beauty, and longevity. Their dream is for their products to have long and purposeful lives that evolve overtime as they patina. Vibeke Scott has also taken other small measures to reduce their environmental footprint, such as shipping items without single-use plastic packaging, and using a universal product care-instruction card in order to cut back on paper waste.
